No fucking way, - that's a gut punch.
It all goes back to Ralph, without his visuals George Lucas would never have been given a budget.
    No Ralph, no Star Wars,
No Star wars, no Alien, no Blade Runner, no Terminator, no sc-fi renaissance

Just goes to show how important the concept artist really can be.
RIP Ralph, I hope it looks like Cloud City up there.

I was just looking at the action figures based on his concepts yesterday...

The force will be with him, always.

I hope nobody minds if I put these up here?

3rd March 2012 - Police forces say they have received a number of calls reporting what is believed to have been a meteor streaking through the night sky.
It wasn't a meteor, it was Ralph heading off to the next star system.

Can't believe I just heard about this. He was the first concept artist I knew of by name.

    Sad to hear him go.

He lived a good life. 82 is nothing to snort at.

Dang. I think he was the one who first made me realize that a lot of the cool scenery in movies was actually painted...

I think he had far more to do with Star Wars success than did George Lucas. Lucas has shown over the years that he likely never knew what it was about Star Wars that worked, but McQuarrie's vision made up for it and made it far bigger and grander than it would have been otherwise.

Could anyone list a book with his prints in and where it's available (I'm in the UK)? I think there was a book out but I'm not sure.

For a movie with a cowboy shooting samurais in space to work you need some really special kind of artistic vision.

Without him Star Wars would have been closer to what everyone at the time expected it to be, a disjointed popurri of a B movie that if even made would have faded into oblivion along with Lucas reputation, both him and everyone that grew up on those films really owes the man big respects.

I recently heard the new John Carter film described as "Star wars for the new generation".
What the fuck? Star wars is the Star wars for the new generation. In my opinion it is timeless, it is one of the greatest and most immersive (with a great depth of lore) sci-fi worlds ever thought up, there is nothing I like more than a good dollop of fan-art and Star wars is the best place to get it from.

In many ways I always wished Star Wars looked as cool as Ralph painted it.

I had just finished watching the original trilogy for the first time all the way through a week ago and looked up the artists who worked on the film, Ralph McQuarrie, Phil Tippett, etc and realized these were the awesome people that made the film work.

It really sucks that he's gone, and here's hoping his work continues to inspire others.
