My very first post here actually! I think I'm doing this right but excuse any odd posts or stuff in the wrong area, I'm still getting the hang of CA

    The underground

I've just begun to get into concept art, I really went to college for 2d animation so most of my posts are brand spanking new virginal concept work!

    Rebecca

I don't know if anyone's read Hans Bacher's "Dream Worlds" but its an awesome book on Production Design with a lot of helpful tips on improving your work. One of the exercises he likes to do to improve composition is speed sketching movie scenes(especially Alfred Hitchock) Its pretty fun and is good for thinking out compositions for future work. This is a speedie from one of the beginning scenes of "Rebecca." About 30-45 mins.

    Onsai People

I got the idea for this concept from watching a documentary on snow monkeys! This is how they would look if they eventually evolved into a people who's culture revolved around hot springs. I'll post some more sketches of the Onsai a bit later.

Some creature concepts I've been working on, I wanted to go a more cutsey-esque route rather than the monster creations I usually work with.

Cool stuff! I think you are well on your way. I love your expressive characters and animals particularly. They have a lot of personality!

Just keep up with studies, I guess. You can never be too skilled to do still life's or master studies.

No need to be snarky. Haha.

    Let me rephrase my comment.

Looking over your work, I see that you've got a lot of really great imaginative pieces. I just don't see a lot of actual "studies", though. Maybe it's just my own limited knowledge at play, which is entirely possible. I'm not one of the pro's, am not planning to make art my career, and I have not gone to art school.

I'd just like to see more direct observational studies from you (aka not from photo or imagination) and I'm suggesting it with the intent that I think it would improve upon your current work. For example, you might painting a colorful bowl of fruit to practice your color usage. You could also do a master study of your favorite portrait or landscape artist (or, alternatively, find a favorite concept artist and do a few studies of their work). Applying the knowledge in an imaginative piece is well and good (what the ultimate goal for any concept artist), but it's also helpful to have a reality check and a "refresher" once in awhile. I don't think you can ever go wrong with more studies.

If you are already doing all of that and I just can't tell, then ignore me and obviously keep up the hard work. I'm sure you will realize your dream of becoming a successful concept artist.

Your work is not bad. Nice colours! I think you have a strong sense for design. Your line work is a bit thick (a problem I still struggle with myself). You also need to practice perspective a bit more.

Keep it up though. It's all about that mileage!

    ART. MORE. NOW.

lol, I wasn't being snarky, I was genuinely thanking you for the heads up on the studies because you're right, I haven't done them in a decent minute and I shouldn't forget them
