Illustration of the Week #19: Broken Thoughts
This is a two week topic.
This weeks topic is Broken Thoughts. It is an open topic, so you can paint whatever you want,
as long as I can see the topic reflected in the image.
As depressing as the topic sounds, remember it doesen´t have to be!
It can be funny, perverted, somber, action-filled, etc. Your imagination is the limit!
The best submissions are often the ones doing something original.
The deadline is Sunday 11th of March, 23:59 GMT
Oh, this looks like fun! And finally I'm checking one out before the due date! Hopefully, the immense freedom of interpretation of this topic won't cripple me.
Let me be the first to post some sketches then =) Open topics like these are difficult, to be honest! Much less of a starting point to start brainstorming from. But here's different concepts that I thought up, any thoughts and preferences/critiques are very much welcome!
Sketch. Not sure I'll have time to finish, but I liked the idea. It's a pretty literal interpretation of broken thoughts. A magical Monk being magically assassinated during magic prayer. Sometimes I can't help but go overboard with the glowy eyes.
Hmmm playing around with this.... This topic is so open- it seems like you could do almost anything! I'm going with a princess who found a cursed piece of jewelry- which has broken into her thoughts and started to possess her.
Oh Dreoilin, you always make me jealous with the concepts you come up with xD I like the idea. Are you going to play around with the composition/lighting/here pose some more? The image it brought up with me was her already wearing it around her neck and her holding the pendant, staring at it transfixed while the demons around her are engulfing her.
Dcritelli I have the feeling the eyes for both of your faces are way too close to each other, you might want to move those apart. I do like the concept so far and the centered composition works well imo. Watch the background though, I don't know if you were planning to include much of a bg, but even if you're going to keep it this dark, and the candles and the guy being killed are going to be the only light sources, then make sure to give at least a hint of a background, kind of like CS Pierce did in his work Death of the First Born:
And look up lots of reference if you're not sure of anatomy, lighting, etc =) The faces and hands could use some more structure (logical since these are (imo) one of the most difficult things to draw)
And here's some of my sketches; started out with the most dynamic composition I had but I decided to turn around the composition of one of the concepts instead afterwards. The idea is that this world was created by this person and the orbs hanging in the tree are her collected thoughts, and she's throwing some bad memories away.

Rengin Thanks for the suggestions. I threw it together fairly quickly, so I know there's tons of room for corrections. Also, I love the composition of your last one with the onlooking critter.
Rengin: Thanks! I kind of wanted it to look like she had just picked up the necklace and it immediately took hold of her. I was mostly having fun with this one and trying out a slightly different way of doing my coloring. I really like the lighting in yours! I think I liked the earlier pose a little bit better though- it seemed a little bit more clear what she was doing? With her hand concealed I'm not quite sure what she's doing. Keep up the good work!
Veshkau: Wow, this one's gonna be so cool
Veshkau Nice, I like the idea and initial sketch! I think the ceiling would be a bit more shrouded in shadows though, which might help to add to it's feeling of doom and horror. Also, watch the shape of that doctor/professor's head, it looks a little skewed right now to me. Curious to see how it progresses =)
Dreoilin I think what might strengthen that idea is some opened jewelry box or cloth flying away (something it was hidden in), to show that she's just found it and the container for it is still around. I love the textured look, though I would maybe deepen the shadows on her a little bit, to get more of a sense of depth and planes.
Small update, and yes Dreoilin, I do need to make it all a bit more clear =) I didn't like the composition of the earlier images though, because they were so static, and I feel like this circular composition works better. I personally like it better if she's looking away from the viewer, like we are some secret onlooker, but her facing towards the viewer is probably the most clear. Or I should find another pose. Thoughts anyone?

An update, lots of eyes looking at ya!
Definitely gonna change the battleship. It just doesn't work right now, especially the explosion.
I hope I can take this as far as I want to before the deadline.
