    kevin_: Thanks, values are something that I really wanted to get good at so it's nice to read that you think I'm making progress there.

    I still feel like my images are lacking solidity and that's mainly because I'm adverse to using linework when starting a big painting. Seems to take far too long to work out the basic compositon using linework and I always end up taking the thumbnails too far. So maybe the solution is to do my thumbnails using a quick value sketch and to add linework afterwards, then go to tight linework and THEN back to values and colour. hmm..

    Really diggin this sketchbook man, thanks for stopping by mine. I'm going to take your advice and push the blur a little more to make a deeper depth of field. I am blown away by your 3 hour study...3 hours!??? that would take me a week! Sorry no crits but you are on a different plane of ability than me so it'd be like an ant offering suggestions to a hawk on how to catch a mouse

    The character study where you just like her face is stunning. Love your work!

    Viking Raider: Thank you man, I'm glad you thought my input was helpful in some way. Keep working, you'll catch up soon (not that I'm THAT much better anyway).

    Im following some of the public classes on crimson daggers. I'm so happy I found the site. The classes and assignments give me a much needed sense of direction as well as a reason for doing studies.

    cool work, i would maybe push a bit more on getting more interesting views to make the shots from on your environment work, you got so many cool ideas just to push them a bit more and it would be great!, keep up the good work!

    Good studies, keep them coming!

    Regarding what you said in post 212, I tried starting with lines first but gave up on that,
    to slow and to little information. I wasn't feeling the masses either. The flow can also be
    affected, not to mention the proportions, which I also find not so good in the characters
    from post 212. Anyway, experiment and see what you find out.

    snatti: Thank you. I'm trying to build confidence in my work so that I can try more interesting things and step outside of my safety zone. It's slow progress, although I think I gained a lot of confidence with these new brushes, at least in the quality of my rendering. But yeah, you're right. I need to push my work further and not stop at the sketch stage every time.

    BlackDelphin: I agree with everything you said. That's why I feel way more comfortable starting with a value sketch but I usually stop there. I'm going to keep trying to push through that stage.

    Hey, thanks for stopping by my sb. Nice work, this one (http://www.conceptart.org/attachment...1&d=1363220306) I really like! It's got the "swoosh"! One thing I'd say is to be careful of overmodelling, especially on girly faces. If you look at Sargent's version he keeps his values much closer together and shapes more idealised around their faces. I've found they usually look better if you focus on the graphic read of the eyes and lips rather than the modelling around them so much. Hope that helps.

    Veshkau: Thank you, it certainly did help. I tried what you said with the female face here. I found it surprisingly difficult to not over render her face. I immediately zoomed in and started bringing out the forms of her cheekbones and such. Eventually i had to zoom out and paint over the majority of her face with a bigger brush to reduce the detail. I really like the way it turned out.

    LoudLikeNature: Thank you :). Time? I dunno, I seem to have enough since most of my interests are more or less confined to my room :E. Motivation? It comes and goes with very little respect for my wishes. Insipiration? I guess other artists and reference. When I have no inspiration I tend to fall back on the samey stuff I always draw. I think motivation and inspiration are very closely related, at least for me.

    Here's today's stuff. Mostly studies with a portrait from imagination and a WIP for the current EOW. Also my first still life in a very long time. I think I took on a bit much for a 1 hour limit. I ended up spending 1hr30 on it in the end. I'll focus on a smaller area next time. Quite happy with it overall though.

    Some rendering and values practice. I'll call this a WIP for now because I want to take it further with colours and textures.
    I might work on the other girl from the last post too so I can practice some different materials other than "non-descript sci-fi suit".

    EDIT: Already seeing a boatload of things to improve on this bitch's lighting and suit. Definately WIP
