    South Africa anyone???

Anyone from South Africa?? I'm from Pretoria and it's hard to find a group of people that's serious about drawing.

I know how you feel, if I tell people that I would love to be a concept artist the look at me stangly with vacant expressions...

    Ja, BAIE groot...

I'm at school in Paarl down in the Cape. Bit sunnier than the U.K!

I'm in High School at the moment and trying to get advice on after school art-training is a bit difficult. Even on the art school forum here they would probably ask which state I am in! Going overseas might be an option but I don't know. I don't suppose that any of you know any recommendable art schools in S.A?

Yey!!! More South Africans... Anyway, as for art schools I think it's best you do what ever it takes to go overseas. Art schools here are no where compared to what is happening overseas. Not to mention it's very difficult to form figure drawing or sketch groups.

Elloha! A paarlite! I lived in paarl for a few years whilst I went to Stellenbosch... Hmmm. Ihave to say my experience with stellies was mixed though it is bvery different now. It was far more about changing and enhancing your way of thinking than actually teaching you technical skills. Even then, I learned a hell of a lot. I couldnt paint so well, but I can see where the concepts behind work is very weak.... I think this means in the end you will be far better off than the technical start that one normally goes for... but it is not very satisfying!... stuff here does tend to be more advanced.

    good luck Lothelawen!

p.s. mic , I have had a look at that site. and signed up. will try add where I can!
    Cheers for the heards up!

Thanks for the advice, I will continue in my search for a decent education!

mic, I know that you mentioned Openwindow Art School in another thread, if going overseas is impossible do you consider it to be a better choice than a university? As I said above, I really want to be a concept artist/ book illustrator and I would love to develope my technical skills. Developing ideas is important to but I am not really intending to focus on the "art for art's sake" genre.

Openwindow is no good if you want to be a concept artist or illustrator. Out of the whole three years you spend there, only two modules/quarters is spent on figure drawing... I had to retake and attend every single figure drawing class - and still that is not enough. And worst of all, 99% of the students there don't give a rats ass about drawing. 80% of the students go there to study 3D and yet they have this attitude torwards drawing/painting/sculpting.

The whole structure of Openwindow feels alot like a lot of crash courses put together. You work hard, but in a very general way (not only do u need to do drawing, you also have to design packages, magazine layouts, websites, 3D etc...). So if you want to specialise then you're out of luck. The place is probably best be called a graphic design school, rather than an art school.

The only good aspect about Openwindow is the contacts with the industry. Finding work after studying there is almost guaranteed (provided you work hard).
