    Greenhouse’s sketchbook

    Hi art friends! Iï'm quite new here on CA and I'm happy to have found a place where to get inspiration and knowledge from. To show my sketches is a little bit intimidating but in the same time a way to get input and feedback getting better and improve myself.
    Today I went to the store and bought a sketchbook "live", and 500 copy papers to draw on. Isn't that a great start!


    I need lots of advice! You're welcome to critique!

    Hallo hallo
    Your soft brush overlayed by hard lines remind me of my old sketches.

    500 sheets of cheap paper, YES!
    Do your studies for the purpose of studies, so a lot of them will be throw aways.
    Make your mistakes and learning on these. Newsprint paper works also.
    (I do find I have the most fun while drawing on cheap paper )
    And of course, Photoshop or your digital choice. Quick studies and quick comps, blaah,
    just don't be afraid to make mistakes.

    Aww thanks vardoburrito! Glad you took your time writing to me, it means a lot. Good words to hear from someone who has walked the path before me. I looked at your sb and it is very impressive. So much cool stuff going on there! But it was quite a time since you posted…I suppose you have other things going on as well. I hope you’re not suffering from some dangerous animal/insect bite from the most dangerous species in the world, down there!?....I have seen it on National Geographic Wild.

    Thanks for the refs. I’m glad you showed me the artist, James Gurney. You’re right he’s amazing! What incredible books! And the BlogSpot seams very interesting.

    Yeah, copy paper is great…..and also for the wallet!

    I would like to see you taking a look at: http://www.ctrlpaint.com/
    It's a great resource about digital painting and even some analog basics. Many useful things are around there.
    I would recommend to you - if you go on with digital painting - to banish the airbrush for a while. Get used to hard brushes to define your forms and values. But for beginning it may be better to do tons of pencil drawings. So, 500 sheets of paper are a good thing to start with =)

    Great start. For the digitals, I would suggest trying to convey form with more edge variety and not smooth everything out so much. Don't be afraid to draw through contours or extend lines of sketches, it really helps with measuring. Excited to see you fill out your SB.

    I’m very curious about posemaniacs, must check that out properly.
    But it’s a little bit intimidating. There are so many muscles and difficult angles to draw, and at the same time it’s very inspiring and good for my progress.

    You're off to a great start! I know you're using pixelovely, don't know if you also know about this site; very similar, but some different poses and options. Nice work on all the figure studies so far.

    You need to work on your line quality a bit - you've got some hairy lines going on. The worst offenders are definitely those digital pieces in your first post, but it's still showing in some of your pencil figures as well. Try doing some quick gestures - 30 seconds max - with as few lines as possible. Some are bound to turn out awful, when lines go off in weird directions you don't intend, but it's a great exercise to build confidence. And since it's a lot of quick ones, you lose very little time if you botch it.

    Haha, yeah you’re right! I definitely have to work on the lines. It’s a big problem at the moment. Thanks for the link! I checked it out today and man that was hard, whoa…30 sec...It’s crazy!
    But I didn’t give up, I did it. And though it was extremely hard and annoying, it was also fun.

    The only suggestion from me to you currently is focus big time your thirty seconds gesture AND contour, it'll help give you better lines in painting and drawing the figure :-3.

    30 sec poses are always ugly dont worry

    I would reccomend that you start your 30 (or 60) sec drawings with 1 or 2 basic "flow lines" that capture the energy of the pose. It'll help you construct the body rather than just drawing the body as a whole. This video explains it in more detail. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xmiwG...el_video_title

    There does not appear to be any under drawings in most of these.It would be great if you could draw the basic 3d shapes of the anatomy first, then use that to guide the outline.Basically, structure structure and more structure is needed.

    Really nice life drawings. One thing I'd suggest: it looks like for some of your figure drawings, especially the quick poses, you're starting by drawing the outside contour lines, conceptualizing the figure from the outside-in. You might find it helpful to try the opposite approach, starting from the inside out and thinking of the figure as a collection of simple 3d-masses (cubes, cylinders, spheres, etc.), and 'constructing' your drawing out of these, only approaching the outside contours when the internal gesture and masses have been positioned.

    That's probably poorly stated and confusing, but two books I'd recommend on the subject are Drawing Lessons From The Great Masters, by Robert Beverly Hale, and The Vilppu Drawing Manual, by Glen Vilppu.

    Just a thought. Most of your life drawings are actually very good, but your gesture sketches reveal what might be an aspect of your approach that could benefit from Vilppu's methods, especially.
