You have some amazing figure/ground interaction going on in the first painting of your last post. I also love the second image because it's sort of a children's book stile at odds with its subject matter.

There's a ton of new things learned. But those things aren't all that artistic, spectacular or Conceptart-worth... unless anyone wants to see infographics for the printing process or my mexican loo modell from Sketchup or wants to hear about intellectual property rights in Germany.
Since the last time I have been trying a lot of new programs, improved the workflow, learned stuff that's necessary for the printing process, for label design and infographics, first time finished projects in Indesign, Illustrator, Sketchup and Autodesk Sketchbook. And on a long sunday I finally tamed the free-growing reference folders with Adobe Bridge - what a nifty little program. Right now I am kicking in my own soft butt cheeks because I didn't see it's usefullness a lot earlier. Besides that I have been running my feet into my stomach on the bookfair in Leipzig where I helped out with the illustrators organization (hey guys!).
Art. 3 pictures? OK.
I could really use a critique for design and composition on that picture with the red bird. I am stuck, to the point where I am completely blind.
This was a one day speeddrawing/coloring job.
I used a modell for this and this didn't give me all that much control over the composition.
There are folders and folders full with stuff that looks like this:
It's all useless without the context.
LOVE everything in your last post. Fantastic design choices, especially in the dog/head one.
I don't know if you've made changes since the last update, but it seems like the bird one is a relatively solid design. It could use some jazzing up of the overall shape, the silhouette gets a little bit boring and predictable as my eyes move down from the bird. Perhaps if you add some sort of complicated large shape toward the bottom to represent the floor you could counteract this effect? I'm imagining some pale, swirly sort of smoke shape in a hue that ties to the bird's in my head. Hope this helps!

Great update! I'm loving those first three. First piece is the kind of surrealism that makes my brain hurt. Third piece, awesome expression and composition! Second piece.. those colours,, well. I suck at painting

Hi kiera, nice stuff you have in here, i like the faces work, and your logos seems good too.
Maybe you should have a different approach than u usually have on graphic/design for more sophisticated illustrations,
like the one with the box and the bird or the head's interior, which seems a bit empty to me on those full white page,
i think you could try to include them in a background even if it's just suggested. anyway keep sharing

I've been on a break from posting stuff online, everything around me has been incredibly busy.
Somehow I fell into a nice cozy art job where I can do all kinds of sweet illustrations and animation jobs in all different styles.
I#m doing landscape studies right now. Alright.
Let's see where this project takes me, I love doing landscape paintings but I'm not necessarily enjoying an epic or realistic look.
Here's the start of this series, chronologically:
Rocks aren't exactly my strongest point (I'm awful at rocks if you can't tell )

More paintings. In the meantime I did some drawings but I didn't try to scan them.
The tree segments on the mountain look awkward.
I did a series of drawings before this one.
Untill now I didn't consciously look for lines of action, dynamic shapes or a proper hierarchy of shapes.
The perspective grids also help me big time to keep the shapes in order.
I guess I've found a possible answer to the tree problem.
I am still not satisfied with the shape of the rocks in the snow. The masked random lines look too obvious like masked random lines.
The sky with the subtle brushstrokes is inspired by Kent Rockwell.
Maybe I should do a copy of his art, it has big shapes that are actually complicated and balanced.

But sometimes I also draw stuff
Green is my favorite color but it is an unappealing color to look at.
When I look through the thumbs in my folder, my eyes are immediatley drawn to reds, oranges, yellows and purples.
They just glide over green and brown. Just look at this picture and the previous picture - the previous one looks a thousand times more interesting even though
it is a really quick thing with far les detail and thought.
Whoa did this one go wrong. I've wanted a red underpainting to shine through because No. 22 felt so green.
It messed up my color perception massivley, letting me fumble around awkwardly for an hour or so
and giving me blue sky and green grass even though in the ref they both had a brown, desaturated hue.
I wanted to tackle compositions with a lot of visual chaos in it,
wondering how I could possibly draw chaotic rocks and woods if I alread take 3 hours for the
This technique allowed me to search for other interesting types of landscapes.
I have the feeling that I wasn't properly building this one, I have to be cleaner with this technique.
It was really easy to change details, like giving the main rock a far darker tone.
The time I need for painting is also half the time I need for the more detailed stuff.
I also added a figure - this was interesting because in the first take I've made the mistake of changing the direction of the reflection.
Showed that I wasn't thinking hard enough.
It was late and I had a fever.
I want to push this hard eged style a bit more.
The hard edges makes it also easier to focus on composition, color and stylization and I have less trouble to draw from imagination.
