Bertling: Don't be daft! Everytime I look on CA I see guys whos work is so much better than mine (particularly hard when they're half my age...) but it just make sme want to get better. I think you should make yourself enter this week as penance for negative thinking

Ville_S: Just a thought, those swirly tooth (tusks)are not working with the proportion somehow, try a variation nice start!

Ded- Cant wait to see where this one goes, very original idea nicly done. I think the placment of the closest leg (his front right) isn't quite right, i think it needs to be placed further out from the body (simaler to the left one) rather than all three in a line.

I particuly like the paterns coming out of the owl eyes.

Here's a pass I did to try and make the image a bit more dramatic. Increased the colours and shadows, and added a bit of haze. I'm not sure if this is better than the last one, or just more fussy. What do people reckon?

Thanks Duman, The ruins were pretty freestyle actually. i just drew a bunch of lines on a seperate file, duplicated it to make a pretty patterns, then warped it into place over the creature.

Scorge, super cool! Just a personal taste thing, but maybe a little over saturated?

Shmaba, I really love your sketchs. A pretty tough idea to execute, I'm looking forward to more.

Ville S, lovely fur textures around the face.

    Bertling! Don't stop!

Vyse, Great sketch, loads of drama.

Bertling: don't even think about quitting, remember we all felt the same at some point, thinking what's the point when there's so many better than me, and then I realise, well refer to my signature...
Just push yourself as much you can and you'll get to where you need to be at some eventually.
btw, I know you might be just playing, but just thought I'd say it anyways, good luck man!

Art is not about competing against others and being better than everyone else, but it is about competing against yourself and discovering your greatest potential!

Tomercs- This seems like a very etherial piece. The mood and style fit the topic well. Good job.

Mistermike - An interesting design. The only thing that is throwing me off is that it looks like he has a big cartoon nose.

Vyse- This piece has a lot of potential. I hope you get it finished in time!

Kristo Novo- Your piece is coming along well. Personal opinion, I'm not a huge fan of the orange. Makes it seem to earth wormy to me.

ded- Some really cool design aspects on this critter. Keep pushing it!

sony- I would like to see some different colors of orange on this guy. He is looking almost florescent, and thats weird to me.

scorge- Does it again. When are you gonna share your magic awesome dust with the rest of us peons? This is so well made, every brushstroke seems perfect.

Urötskidoji - You have a really nice style and have already put quite a bit of character into this creature. I just think it needs to be a lot farther away from your basic owl.

logistic puppet- A really promising design. There seems to be a strange shape coming out of its mouth, however. Could just be some wonky line work.

I could use some help pushing this a little farther. Comment and critiques are welcome.

Bertling: Don't be put off by other peoples art, i know there's a myth about art as being a gift, but its a gift that's earned from hard work and long hours, and continually pushing yourself to get better and better. I don't think there is one artist in the world who can honestly say they are truly happy with everything they created, even the great masters had their doubts, why else would they continually try to create and evolve their art. So don't worry about what others are doing, even at the cost of creating a disaster, just put in the effort and use the challenge as your motivation and you will get there.

I know I always say this but seriously, some stunning pieces here. I saw the thread developing and couldn't help thinking of something myself. I've no chance to get it finished and was really just practicing working up a thumbnail sketch... but after 3 hours thought I might as well post it. My favourite so far is Tomercs, has a great scifi aesthetic to it but retains the sense of norse god mythology, similar to the style of the game Too Human from Silicon Knights.

Just out of curiosity! Does large size make the keeper more powerful/Mighty/fearsome? I am seeing to many entries with very large proportions for the gate keepers.

sony: well it's based on your design, this is a fantasy creature so a smaller, say magical creature could also work. Most of us (myself included) are going for more of a formidible creature that relies on it's brute strength, plus a larger creature would make a more suitable guard seeing as there isn't much that can actually hurt it. Smaller sizes usually make the creature more vulnerable, and since it is guarding the gateway to Valhalla, I'm sure Odin would want to make sure it is well protected.

Art is not about competing against others and being better than everyone else, but it is about competing against yourself and discovering your greatest potential!

Valhalla have 560 gates according to myth, Just another thought in my mind if gate keeper is mighty than the residents or grantees of Valhalla wont you think it will make him in a place for "taking over" the Odin or his fellows? as the fenrir wolf will do according to myth?

    Musoxins
Valhalla is a Hall in Asgard and belongs to Odin, he rides eight legged horse and have two ravens. I've been working on this for a while now. I doubt I'll have it done in time to post for finals but I'd still like any helpful suggestions people can offer.
It still needs a lot of work, that's for sure. The idea is that this creature was created when Odin needed a gatekeeper to prevent people on Midgard from entering Valhalla. One drop of the all fathers blood, the skeletal remains of a powerful beast that died in battle, and a handful of Midgard to keep the beast tethered to the realm.

I'm seeing a lot of inspiring work so far, everyone is doing great!

@ DUMAN- yours is particulary hard to crit as it has an easotheric quality which I really like, but it also get in the way of realism.
I think maybe leave the head to be as it is, but root the legs more in reality; make them more like actual animal legs. maybe check for horse leg ref. and get them rooted on the ground right.

erzebeth- lovely change of texture between the patchy for and the steam& lights.

penciltipred- how about some foam on the mouth? bet it'd look threatening then.

    ded- completely wierd. love it.

kristo novo- well, it's beatifull. but why a snake?

heres what I got.. really was hoping to make the deadline but looks like it will be tight.
will put it up regardless though. that;s what I told myself anyway ^^
