    ROUND #248, Valhalla Gatekeeper

    topic:

    ROUND#248, Valhalla Gatekeeper

Valhalla is the hall of the slain in Nordic mythology. A special place in the after life where hero's and kings go to live in eternal glory after dying in battle.

Your task this week is to design a creature that guards the gateway to this great hall, judges the worth of those that approach, and allows the worthy to enter.

here's the wiki on Valhalla in case you haven't heard of it...

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valhalla

    Requirements this week...

    - the creature should be able to block the path to Valhalla, which means it could be large and broad, or physically powerful enough to stop even the mightiest warriors.

    - the creature design should have a Nordic aesthetic.

    Deadline:

    February 15th, 9:00pm PST (GMT -8 )

    hmmm...this topic sounds familiar...

Of course I'm in! Huge fan of Nordic mythology so will be fun creating a creature based off of that! Just something to consider, the enemies of the gods are Jotun, commonly known as Giants, so this creature must be formidible indeed!

I'm concerned with defining "Nordic aesthetic". Can we get some clarification on what this really means?

Other than that minor quibble, this sounds awesome. I already have some ideas floating around. I might play a couple hours of Skyrim just to get into the proper mindset...

Duman: I think it'd be best to consider what sort of creatures and animals were associated with the Norse. A lot of creatures in their myths were heavily based on real animals in the scandinavian area. Or those the Norse were able to encounter during their voyages.

I love anything that has to do with Norse Mythology, so I might join up for once, if I can find the time, and some inspiration. It's an interesting topic, to be sure.

I knew that book on Mythology would come in handy at some point

me again....couldn't stop myself so I did some brainstorming, I pretty much know where I'm going with this...
middle creature here was to be some kind of troll like creature, to be used as sort of an oversized guard dog, but it turned into more of a croc-like creature...gonna be working with the body type of the other one, then adding bits and pieces here and there...

Rob Powell Nice sketches Rob, lookin forward to seeing what you come up with. The idea looks prity cool so far

Giant mythical creatures are too much fun. Also, those who haven't played Skyrim, should check out the end of the game for inspiration. Trying not to give spoilers here. 0_o

Is anyone allowed to enter these contests? I've been thinking about trying out a COW, and I'm really into Norse mythology. I already have a few ideas.

duman: yeah i think rob powell has it right. think about what kinds of mythical creatures norse mythology would base a gatekeeper on. and like rob said think about real Scandinavian beasts that they would have based it on.

for examples, i did a quick google search and it brought up this interesting show on animal planet, viking wilderness. here's a link to some pics from the show so you can see the kinds of animals that live in the region. maybe you can get some good starting points out of it.

    http://animal.discovery.com/tv/vikin...ss/photos.html

    hope that helps.

also Rob Powell: did i get this idea from you? i have a feeling i got this idea from somewhere on here and i cant remember where. btw i love the antler stuff going on in your sketches. seems right on target.

spiral horn: yeah, everyone is encouraged to participate. the more the merrier.

(lark: thanks, well I don't know where you got your actual inspiration from, but I did suggest 'Guardian of Valhalla' in the suggestions thread a while back, no worries though, I'm glad you went with this topic whether you got it from me or not.

Nordic aesthetic means valkyries, norse gods (Odin, Loki, Thor etc), think vikings downing mead out of drinking horns, normally cold, chain mail and roughly hewn leather, berserkers etc.

Anyway, I'm thinking that it has to be something regal but dangerous looking, haughty but not arrogant looking.

Hi Everyone! I thought I'd try and not draw a robot for once, and seeing as this sounded cool, well, yeah!

Here's where I am so far. It took me longer than I expected as this isn't my usual kind of thing. I'm still noodling the head and I keep on overdoing the rear legs, can't seem to find the right values...

Rob, I king of like the platted sketch, very different. It hints instantly that the animal is tamed, and GEB, similar with the chain on yours too. Nice stuff.

Here is what I have so far. The idea I wanted to run with I called "The Stag Of The Ages". I image a massive cross between a stag/bull/dragon. Between its massive horns is the actual gateway to the next life. What do you think?

I join this round. Here's my wip. It's a wild boar (not sure for the term) also very present in the North mythology.

Tomercs --> man I really love your sketching of this giant beast. Can't wait for the rest

I'm thinking of something huge, six-eyed, watching over the gate, maybe Odin's lovely pet or something..

Geb: looking pretty good, but i do have one criticism, and i could be wrong here but i think you should uncross his/her forelegs, i know dogs and other animals will often do this, but crossed as they are you give him character, and you loose a bit of that creature element, something that may actually work against you in the final vote.
