    Hiding the obnoxious grid at the top of every forum page

    I've written a Stylish plugin to hide the huge grid inexplicably at the top of every single forum page. This grid is cool on the home page, semi-useful on the gallery page, and totally obnoxious on the forum pages.

    You need Stylish installed in your browser (Firefox or Chrome).

    Then go to the userstyles.org page where I have uploaded it:

    conceptart.org - remove huge grid from forum

    If you don't have access to Stylish (say, you are using Safari), there are probably other ways to add this style (say, Greasemonkey). The CSS code of the style is this:

    Code:
    @-moz-document domain('www.conceptart.org'),
         url-prefix('http://www.conceptart.org/forums') {
    /* Hide the huge grid */
    #thumbgrid_wrap
    {
      display: none;
    }

    /* Hide banner ads */
    img.bannerz
    {
      display: none;
    }
    }
    I haven't tested this a whole bunch. Let me know if you see problems with it. In particular the "nth-child" line is a bit suspect.

    I just use Adblock. You had to make it complicated.

    I had to Adblock when I was banning spammers (nearly called them people) and was wearing out my scroll finger.

    I like the grid and have no problems with it.

    I got no problem with that, or even not wanting to see the grid.

    But it riles me just a little when someones first post is to label the grid that is meant to drive and inspire everyone as obnoxious. But I sound like an asshole, to the OP thanks for trying to help I guess.

    Meh, my stitches hurt.

    Sure, it's kind of big. But considering the great resource that is this site is provided free of charge....

    I think I'll survive.

    Getting rid of the "obnoxious grid" is like just going to YouTube to watch comments.

    Sorry, here for the art.

    Personally, I find the grid annoying. Not enough to download something to get rid of it, but it really annoyed me when I first joined. I've gotten used to it now.

    Why all the bashing? It doesn't seem that offensive to me to dislike the grid.

    I am perpetually surprised at the ability of first posters to trigger lengthy debate on CA. I'm not sufficiently computer-wise to judge if they are even persons and not some kind of spam bot. It's like they are some kind of mechanized controversy generators.

    In case the OP is, in fact, a flesh and blood person, then welcome to CA!

    The grid? I like it! Sometimes, late at night, when I don't want to go to bed, but don't have anything useful to do, I click on the grid squares. What delightful journeys they take me on.

    The truth will set you free,
    but first it's gonna piss you off!

    I don't know if the problem is the grid itself or the giant ads above and below it. When I first joined this site, I think there was one banner below the grid to advertise new downloads and big events on the forum - I really liked that banner because it alerted me to new developments on the site that I was interested in. Now there are 4 banners and the 'header' is so large that on my Chromebook, it takes up the entire page so you have to scroll down to see the actual forum. I'm not saying that there shouldn't be any ads, but you have to be aware that if they continue to expand, they will eventually start to annoy your members and they will in turn look for ways to remove them.

    I don't mind the little rectangles with awesome art either, but the ads are quite annoying. It's cool though, I just ignore them :/ at least they're visually pleasing ads and not something like "find singles in your area" or "mom makes 4000 dollars a week" sort of ads.

    I prefer a grid that links to tutorials and things we'd actually be interested in rather than random ads about stuff.

    My Sketchbook

    And then God said, "Let us make man in our likeness and our image. Let us make him ridiculously hard to draw so that poor artists everywhere will have to spend 10,000+ hours failing repeatedly before they can begin to capture the form and likeness onto a two-dimensional surface." And there was man. And it was good. And artists everywhere lost their minds.

    First, only Star Eater's post was sort of bashy. Second, the original post is bashy. Wordman obviously brought it upon himself. So, i think we're actually pretty well behaved in this thread.

    What? There are tutorials in the forum section. Random ads? What are you talking about, d00d? What you seem to think of as 'ads' are educational downloads, the money of which goes towards keeping the site running. The thumbnails are the artwork of people who have been altruistic in their contributions towards this site.

    I think you're misunderstanding, that's exactly the point manlybrian was making: "I prefer a grid that links to tutorials and things we'd actually be interested in (like the one above) rather than random ads about stuff (like on most sites).

    You know I've been posting here for awhile and don't even know how people get on the grid. I think if you come here enough you start just thinking of the grid as a reminder that you are here.

    I visualise the grid as a big sitting room for the big kids to look down on us through a large window.

    I think the artwork-less forums would look pretty bland without the banner on top. And I'm glad that it informed me of the download sale.

    I don't know how people get on the grid either, but I'm guessing is something to do with the ratings of their galleries. Each member has a gallery which they can submit art to and anyone can rate it. If you look at it you'll see thousands of galleries each filled with each person's work but only a few of them appear on the grid above.
