    Nice work!

    Don't listen to me:

Define your shapes better and you will be able to get away with rough brushwork. Right now, at least to me, it's a bit messy to look at and the scenery isn't fooling me well enough.

Other than that the colors and atmosphere work really well!

Kiitos . Long way to go, mut tästä se lähtee.

Here's a continuation of the most recent batch of thumbnails. I will take atleast one of these to a full finish.

Always great to see another Fin here.
This sketchbook is looking pretty darn badass so far! I'm especially loving those thumbs.
Every single one in your latest batch would make a sweet painting, so go for it!

Composition laid out. Time for details.

Sorry for not answering Ville! Things have been pretty hectic lately. Thanks indeed, I am still wondering if I should push the other thumbs forward, but I guess I'll save em for later date and do something mid-sized the next time.

Heh, it is so easy to take and upload photos with the tablet that I must share this one!

These are for the school assigment, there is also a third picture at the top covered by the book. Sorry for the stupid cropping, but it was mandatory for the class.

    Now that's epic!
Loving the details, especially on the architechture.

    Few crits.

-Composition looks good. Nice overlaps and the river is forming nice meandering line trough the picture. I guess one could say that you should shift the figures off center per the rule of thirds, but I don't really care. I think it works fine as it is

-River provides nice entry point to the picture and the dark parts on the upper left and lower right frame the picture nicely. I feel like upper right corner could use some sort of framing element as well.

-Values are a bit monotone. There's no real big jump between light and shadow nor is there gradation from from darker foreground to lighter backround.

    - I feel like there's quite a bit horizontal lines in the buildings and other elements. (I do this constantly myself and i'm trying my hardest to get rid of that nasty habit)
It flattens the image. Diagonals man. they work.

    - Classic advice , keep those lights warm and shadows cool or vice versa. Not only does it provide nice color dynamic but it also helps the viewer to understand what's in the light and what's in the shadow.

Quick paintover to illustrate my points.

In any case awesome environments dude. Keep on pdating, I wanna see more.

Thanks a ton Ville! You illustrated some points that I really feel are problems with my paintings in general.

I really tried to keep the picture from being overdramatized, but this led to quite shallow contrast which your paintover fixed. I especially like the changes of the size of the right castle, that definitely makes the piece so much more powerful.

I believe most of the shadows were cool, but due to the desaturated nature of the image that probably wasn't too apparent.

Composition rules are meant to be broken as long as the image still works, that's why I kept the central character. In your paintover though quite much attention is being pulled to the central figure because of the strong highlights on the water. I think that change doesn't work too well. In the original the highlights continued to the left and didn't overemphasise the figure which probably led it to looking okay.

I was also looking for quite subtle touch with this one as said, and thus the changes your proposed to the light's luminosity doesn't work well in my eyes. But that's the path I would have definitely taken if I was painting something dramatic!

But yesh, all in all thanks a lot for the paintover. I agree with most things.

    Cheers

    --------------------

Yesh, let's have more stuff! Copied from facebook: "Today's WIP! Just starting out with the first layer, so it is missing all the fancy shadows and value areas."

This will be a lot of work! But I love it absolutely. I should have done this in the sketching stage, but I decided that it needs more life. So I am going to sketch in some birds tomorrow.

Update, here's a copypaste from other source:

"Hey peeps, sharing this because watercolours are neat! I am taking a lot of time with this, so I am not even done with the first colour pass yet as can be seen. I will probably also refine (so late) the sketch of the upper section a bit to get the branches right. I will really need to focus on the value structure too, but luckily that is still possible to fix because one can always go down with the values with watercolours. The photo is a bit crappy, but the colours are almost right."

EDIT: This version is a lot closer to the real colours than the first WIP posted! I really need a real camera.
