    Mountain Priest

It's been a while since I've just created something for the pure fun of it without using a brief from a competition or a commission to motivate me. This piece is just for fun. I'm moving into the detail stage and wanted to get other people's eyes to look it over for me first; I don't want to have to go back over a lot of detail work because of some element in the basic composition that was lacking.

Nice work Eclectix. I'm immediately reminded of some of the great paintings of dragons from the TSR 2nd Edition DnD days. Specifically Dark Sun.

One possible concern I have is the dragons eye...right now, to me anyway, it looks like it has a hole from one side of its head to the other and we can see the sky through the other side.

Looking pretty nice composition wise. The only thing that bothers me a little is the structure of the wing arms and how I can't see where that right front leg is going. The tail also feels a bit cramped/forced around that mountain and I'd like to see a bit more of that colder color come back elsewhere (the sky perhaps, or the clouds). Otherwise though good job, looking forward to seeing more refinement .

This looks really cool! The thing that stands out to me is the interaction with the sun. It's generally not effective to have elements "kissing" each other. Right now the dragon's nose is just barely touching. I think it would look more dynamic if they were either overlapping, or had a visible band of sky between them. Can't wait to see this finished!

Yeah this is nice. Nice warms and cools. The first thing I noticed is that the sun doesnt look like a sun. It looks like a glowing moon. It doesnt really make sense.

I agree about the tail. Put the tail going behind the rock in the same direction it is now. Then make it a little lighter and thatll make even more depth and look more natural.

Yeah and the nose shouldnt touch the sun like that.

    Good job!

I thought it was the moon? Sometimes when the moon rises it does have a fairly bright orange color, at least where I live that's a pretty frequent sight. Sure it's exaggerated in this picture but it works for a fantasy image.

Thanks to all for the replies!

Yep, it is the moon; I think I will make it a bit bigger and that will hopefully solve two problems brought up here; 1, it will be more obviously a moon I think, and 2, it will fix the problem of the nose touching the edge of it.

I will also work to define the arm portions of the wings better than they are at the moment. It's hard to tell what they are doing right now.

I also will try different color schemes for the eye, maybe a deeper red and not as intense or something. I don't think that I want to bring in a totally new color, though, because I don't think it would fit the color composition.

I will see what the tail looks like going behind the rock. I guess it does look a bit like he's hugging the rock for dear life right now.

Update so far. I am torn between two different moon sizes. I like the slightly larger moon and the much larger moon, but I am not sure if the much larger moon is overkill. I'm posting both versions in case anyone wants to share their opinion. I have not yet worked on the wing structures. I do like the tail better this way. I think I like the eye better, too, but it could still look like a window/hole if you look at it just wrong. I don't know if that's really a problem or not.

Really nice image. I like the tail better now.
There is one more problem with the moon, I think. It has a lot more details, and is a lot sharper than anything else in the picture, so it doesn't fit in for me. You'll have to either paint over the moon, or add details and textures to the dragon and rocks.

ADDED: Oh, wait, I just checked back and you said you're just starting with the details. Stupid me.

    Keep up the good work.

PS. The clouds should be in front of the moon..

It doesn't cost You much to leave a comment in my sketchbook, and it can help me a lot.

Great start...solid composition. Two things bother me...
    1) scale - is the dragon really that massive? Like the size of a mountain? Because of the other indicators, which we read as mountains, he seems like he is roosting on a massive mountain. If it is just a large rock outcrop try to figure out a way to clarify that.
    2) The anatomy where the front leg and wing meet - doesn't look very functional or clear how that works in there?

Bigger moon conflicts with dragon to my eye.

    What would Caravaggio do?

Another update before I log off and go to bed. I'm not entirely sure whether the stars will stay or go; I'll need to see it with fresh eyes in the morning; I'm not seeing the picture for the pixels.
