So I finally finished my first (analog) sketchbook since I moved to Tokyo. My stay should end by April, and until then I try to draw as much as I can!

I started from 2B pencil, then changed to charcoal pencil. eventually I found pen feels much better and looks better when exported to PC.

Thanks for the comment you left on my sb, I certainly admire your rendering as well, much neater than my own actually, great inspiration. Your sketch studies are pretty thorough as well, keep it up!

Papu: thanks! I'm doing more drawings on the second sketchbook!
udonhead: nice feedback! I haven't tried master study yet. It'll be a good practice for rendering. thanks!
Panshi:wow, thanks! yours gave me lots of inspiration, so thanks!
ezekrialase: thanks! as I do more speed painting I feel I'm too slow esp. in environment stuff. I'll work more on that.

2 paintings I did today. practicing sketching with perspective.

I think I'm gonna start another WIP close up post series.

Long time ago I did this sketch with pencil
    Name: 25437171.jpg
Views: 1000
Size: 261.4 KB

My husband liked it so much he suggested to make it into a party scene,
combining other sketches I made around the time.
    Name: IMG_0369.JPG
Views: 975
Size: 121.4 KB

So I decided to rework on the anatomy of the characters a bit
    Name: rough.jpg
Views: 985
Size: 27.5 KB

Since then I've been struggling to get the comp right,
and I think...I finally got it...
    Name: teaparty.jpg
Views: 989
Size: 78.4 KB

Some features are different, and the overall feeling of this
will be cuter than the original one. Also the style will be line based illustration,
    something like Sean Murray's stuff.
I like lines, and I haven't done this kind of rendering for a while...

    I'm excited to get started!

That looks promising! There's a few strange tangents you might want to look into, like the wing's elbow of the dragon thing with the small of the back of centaur girl, the wizard alien's staff knob with the window whatchamacallit and maybe also spider leg girl's tail with the door's edge. Also i wonder if it'd spruce up the composition if spider leg girl stood a little taller than six leg girl. But hey, nitpick nitpick you know ...

    Hey this thread is fantastic.
I actually like the colored crop of your recent painting in #189 better compositionally than the zoomed out version.
Regardless you have some sweet drafting skills, those hands are really nicely simplified.
    Keep up the good fight.

It works really well with the fantasy theme - I likey

That's probably the dumbest thing to say, but I really love your sketching technique (and of course the more finished work, too). So vivid and dynamic.

While staying in Tokyo I was lucky enough to get some freelance illustration jobs from Japanese developers. Above is the set of paintings I did for Bahamut Greed. It's been interesting experience working with Japanese producers...their custom and culture are totally different. They are always extra polite, replies quick, but somehow tending to have very loose concept in contract. Oh, and when you sign a contract in this country, you actually authorize it by sealing it. Everyone in Japan has a seal with their name on it for this purpose. I thought it's a pretty cool custom.

Anyways, I'm coming back to the US in June due to my family situation (again). I'll be working as a freelance artist for a while...till I run out of jobs or savings, haha. Wish me luck! (psst if you are a director who's looking for a freelance artist to hire I'm available starting June!)

Well there's definitely been a huge improvement just since the top of the page. Great work! Some of the linework in the earlier posts was so busy the forms would get lost. You look much more confident now with your lines.

    Hair Fish: thanks!
    Care: thanks
    kalevy: hope this helps!
    z01ks: drawing time!
CraneWife13: thanks for the observation. I was also struggling in the first sets of analog sketches to find the right medium. I found a specific ball point pen has the best flow of ink and line thickness that works well for my method.
