    Stuff, explained by geniuses

Every year, Edge.org poses a question to a hand-picked group of the world's "most complex and sophisticated minds." Then they publish the responses.

Looks interesting, but, holy crap that's a lot of reading....
I need an audiobook version so I can draw my homework while I listen to it!

Always one of the highlights of my year.

My own answer to the question: Darwin's theory of evolution by natural selection. A golden oldie to be sure, but very seldom before or since has so much been explained in such simple terms.

I do very much like some of the other choices too though. E.g. I see one person chose Eratosthenes' determination of the circumference of the earth; ever since I first read about it in Sagan's "Cosmos," it has remained one of my favourite pieces of elegant brilliance in science.
