heres a pencil doodle i did while i had a lot of free time at school, didn't focus that much on proportion on the more detailed sketch so I can see a lot of errors, but I do like the idea, maybe ill get some reference and come back to this later. I wanted him to have bigger eyes(kinda like bug eyes i guess) so im not sure if it works because they dont necessarily fit in with the proportions of his face. I havent been doing enough studies lately i noticed, gonna try to catch up soon.

some sketches done at lunch today, just got the Weatherly Guide To Drawing Animals and its pretty good, it shows construction pretty well with a whole diverse range of animals, itll be awesome to make some cool creature designs after studying this along with my human anatomy books. ill post some more of my studies soon. hmm i need to review the profile of the head a little bit so i don't make any errors.

You have a lot of nice stuff here.
Keep praticing the basic like gestures, proportion and anatomy. You are on the right track
Keep it up!

i'd recomend you to learn anatomy from Gottfried Bammes books instead of Burne Hogarth. also i'd recomend to learn the skeleton, before mucles, its way easier to draw figures, when you know where the bones are and how mucles work on them. so, find Bammes's book and redraw, and try to understand how all the bones and mucles works together. hope, i helped you.

a character design done without reference after studying an animal construction&anatomy book during the weekend. next time ill try adding perspective/foreshortening.
im inspired to make this universe thats a mixture between western and fantasy, creatures, elves, dwarves, cowboys, duels with old fashion weapons and futuristic arcane guns, with dragons with saddles and bandits and cowboys on on them. saloons on the ground and in the sky- theres a whole array of possibilities.just one of many possible ideas of mine.

Thanks for stopping by my SB.
Looking good, can definitely see improvement from page 1 to 5!
Keep your proportions in mind The character on the design above has an extremely low amout of fat/muscles on the upper part of his leg.
Love the expression on the horses face - Almost as if it is about to throw him off

thx AndreM happy im improving , ive been studying proportions lately so hopefully my characters are a bit better proportioned than before, and i definately need to focus on legs more spent way too long on the upper body- thx again for the advice and critique.

pen doodles done in math class and a figure photo study- about an hour- i added glasses just for the fun of it. this study will hopefully help me a little with skin tones and figure landmarks. ive been studying some stuff on the PSG art tutorial and i now understand how to use big brushes better in digital paintings which is cool.i hope to improve my traditional work and my digital art in conjunction with each other

reworked the ideas a little, makes me want to research more about animal anatomy for creatures.done without ref and with a Bic pen. attempting to constantly mix elements of fantasy and western in my designs just for the heck of it. gonna post more studies in a little bit. on the guy on the left i tried to make it look like he was using his hand to make him float but just made the hand look retarded, oh well.

saw this weeks CHOW, not gonna actually participate in it but going to try it just for fun and practice, heres some character thumbnails and gonna choose the one i like most and maybe do a detailed design with some reference or something.

working on a loomis study, also rendering the skeleton a little bit just for the fun of it.i have such a crappy scanner i think im gonna start to photograph my drawings instead.. like the faint leg is actually drawn in but you cant see it at all from the scan, oh well.when i drew this i realized that the elbow aligns with the navel, which will definately help me also.

hey man, thanks for checking out my sketchbook! It feels like alot of your work comes off "stiff" and i dont mean that to be harsh, just some constructive criticism. I think you should look into developing your gestural drawing skills some more, theres a guy on youtube called Mark Mcdonnell, phenomenal artist and gestural master, take a look at thsi video
good luck and continue with your studies, mate!

Thanks for the advice you gave me earlier. Like the way you are churning out your character studies I def need to do more of the same,
Like me I think you need to just keep at the anatomy studies and drawing a figure drawings too. But your def moving in the right direction and your work rate is phenomenal there is no way you wont see major improvements like this.
PS I know you recommended that I use Loomis and so does everyone else but i just find his book a bit confusing and not so sure how to apply it in a practical sense, have been using Michael Hampton's Constructive Anatomy instead
Anyway keep at it mr you made a great start.

hey thanks ja1307 for the advice, ill constantly look back at your sketchbook so keep updating , and is michael hampton's book good? ive heard of it but yet to go buy it.
May 25th, 2012 #144
well since my anatomy sucks not sure i best placed to sat, its a different approach then Loomis or Bridgeman is take a construction approach that stresses building in stages and trying to see the bod in terms of building blocks and functional shapes
here is a link to a video session with him from CGMW,
He talks about some of his principle here and has examples of his drawings ect so you can se if you think it would be helpful to you.
May 29th, 2012 #145
hey thanks ja1307 ill have to check that out,
btw i lost my tablet pen for a little bit so i just started drawing the same character with a Bic pen - i know i should have focused more on proportion and anatomy especially since ive been learning a lot more about it lately, but i mostly focused on the pose and idea with this design. next time i want to put my character in perspective and to also be more in proportion.
one thing i like about pen is less smudge than graphite .and its nice when i have a pen that can go from light to dark value, which is easier to do with more practice with the medium. now im getting better at going in stages with my drawings- constructing it all first, finishing the line drawing, then going back over it and rendering the values. the dowside is it takes forever, with lots of really light crosshatching but i like the way it looks.
i think gestures and studies of poses along with dynamic ones should be a good help for me.btw the scans of these drawings arent perfect so i had to edit them and they may look a little off or pixelated in some places.

painted over this with some acrylics thinned with water, btw i was thinking about getting some prismacolor markers- anyone use them and like them?

heres a WIP, got reference was used for the pose of the body in both the digital and pen drawing., having the right edges seems to really help the digitals clarity, with either sharp or soft depending on the area. I didnt make the little flame in his hand bright enough, gotta give it a glow and have it hit the surface of his arm.i want to do a completely finished digital artwork so definately spending a lot more time on this one.any advice or tips to help is welcome .
May 31st, 2012 #148
phew, spent a few hours still working on the details, i appreciate any advice for this, im surprised that once i get used to painting in Gimp its really not that bad a program for painting, especially because i can use photoshop brushes
May 31st, 2012 #149
well im gonna take a break, ill rework it later.its interesting for the amount of details im putting in i used very few references, ya in the beginning to help with skin color and pose but once you get those main things down, and you can really see the idea, sometimes it seems to paint itself or something.after im done with this gonna do a lot of digital studies and anatomy ones also, cause of course still got lots and lots to learn.

i guess its done for now, although im probly going to adjust things later.
