Draw a self portrait? ❒ Yes ❒ No

    03/28/12

Meh... turns out I didn't keep with the every other day SP. So... just SPs whenever I feel like it. My focus right now is on concept art and getting better with my digital stuff :3 Though I will say that 3 months straight of SPs has helped me a lot with doing work digitally.

This will be self portraits every other day now lol.

    01/1/12

Hey guys, I decided to make a second thread-- just for daily self portraits. I personally think this would be a nice way to start and finish off the year of 2012.

Most importantly, I'm doing this for myself because I realize that my digital work is not up to par with my traditional stuff. I aim to do a daily self portrait in digital (whether it's quick or long-sitting) just to supplement my other work done on the computer and to practice more of observation. I know I can do still life as well but I also notice my head structure is awful. Please, do not expect my daily self portraits to be the same quality as my photo studies as this requires me to be still and stare at the mirror D:

Hopefully this will get me to focus more on my studies as well-- because right now I feel that I'm not concentrating on the right things or my focus just isn't there most of the time. Anyway, have a gander at my main sketchbook thread in the signature if you feel the need to crit my stuff

Although daily self portrait do have the potential to make you draw every face you draw look like yourself it might be a good idea.
I browsed through your blog a bit and your traditional stuff really is better.
Some of your weaknesses also translate to digital, though, e.g. wonky proportions.
I think it's mostly the nose/mouth/chin that gives of this slightly "derpy" look^^.
You tend to "bulge out" the bottom part of the face if that makes any sense.
Also, try to blend out the lips more, they sort of have that lipstick look to them.

Values in the last one are already looking better so keep these up.

i was just needed to say something that was funny (or obnoxious)

    Erm, critique..
ide like to see your base drawings for these. i think you can streamline the quality of your rendering by utilizing selections and masking techniques.

Your self portraits have a lot of consistency as far as likeness, but I would try to push your lights more to emphasize the form. Keep it up.

@Xelar: thank for the helpful words xelar. i really gotta study up on more head structure but i see what you mean. will definitely try to keep up with this

@Aryeh: hehe thx jakeh. hmm.. not really concerned with masking techniques when doing these but please share and i will try it on future portraits. here's what the usual process is:
    Attachment 1394866

@ElricSlinger: thanks elric. i see what you mean. with the lamp shining in my face, my values become a bit 'skewed' when i look back at the monitor to paint. so i will have to intensify a few highlights as you mentioned.

@ven-: definitely ven! try it out thx

-010512 (artificial lighting-- hmm.. i sort of feel like i'm getting the hang of this, but my structure is still awful.. more studies are to be had!)

also.. i look like i'm 16 HAHAHA-- but i just suck at capturing likeness at the moment

Unique challenge, keep it up. Add to it, try more studies along with it. Don't limit yourself. Cheers

nice to see how you set up such a thing, I always find it a struggle to put that mirror the right way. Self-portraits look nice so far, maybe try some traditional too

You could also post your self-portraits here by the way (that section is so empty lol) http://conceptart.org/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=22

@Sushy: thanks sushy and for that link as well but.. not sure if i will start a 3rd thread just to put them in there hehe... and yeah mirror/lighting is always hard to figure out but it's fun to experiment with too
