Ah i knew the animation looked familiar i saw the Gotye video a while ago i really fell in love with it. Keep up those studies man your really improving. Remeber to focus on balance as well, try working with action lines or a line from the pit of the neck down to the feet and make sure their center of gravity is on the line or make up for counterbalance. Having a good sense of balance will give your figures more of a "weighted" look i find. keep it up

Thanks Steph. Yeah I agree I could do with a bit more concentration on the weight. Sometimes it gets rather overwhelming just how much you have to think about to study with any benefit.
Update -- doing lecture notes as Scott talks through the Bammes plate realise this whole page i just ten mins of a 1 hour lecture. So much to learn .. sooo much

Muscle studies are looking great. A fun site for gestures is posemaniacs. I use their 30 Second Gestures for when I want to do a quick warm up page before getting into the real work. Might help you out a bit too
Also: Thanks for the links to those videos. I really love their animation style!

I feel you man its a LOT to take in. Learning anatomy and its functions are one thing, then as artists we have to learn how to REPLICATE IT from memory. But just pace yourself and organize your studies and you will definitely see the incremental improvement. Remember to keep all your drawings so that one day when your feeling down about your art you can look at them and see in your hands the proof of your improvement

Whirly, your drive to master Anatomy is impressive. But don't forget about Value, Gesture and perspective. Anatomy is the Structure, Gesture is the Movement and Value is the Form. I'd do a few light studies on the side, Still Life or Figure Studies. A Well structured form will still look flat if it doesn't have strong values to push it off a page. Keep on trucking along friend.

Art Minded: Im not all that fond of Pose Maniacs .. the pictures just look ugly with weird poses. I loose inspiration if I'm not looking at prettier stuff .. using lovecastle mostly for my gestures. Thanks for the tip though!
Ixallus: Hey mate. You are absolutely right!! It may not appear this way from my sketchbook but in my humble opinion anatomy is one of the least important things to know (although still necessary to know it!). Gesture to me is the single most important thing and with every drawing I do that idea seems to become even more solidified. I definitely do need to do some light studies of the figure although that idea really scares (which tells me I really really need to do it!)
Some gestures tonight of varying lengths of time. LIFE DRAWING IN COUPLE OF WEEKS man I'm scared!!

Gestures are coming along nicely It seems you are pushing yourself towards fluid movement. Keep it up

I agree nice gestures!
I do this to me too but you should really do more back and bending down study. Those are probably the hardest because there is less detail to pin point key aspects of the movement.

Kate, your absolutely right. I will make a point to start doing some bent over poses or indeed where the pelvis overlaps in the ribcage in space.
Sorry I haven't updated in a while. iv started to learn to draw in pen and markers (haven't even touched the markers yet! im scared!) So I am just doing lots of warm up between doodles and gestures. Nothing really worth showing since warms ups are lots of lines and circles and stuff.
Also have the life drawing classes soooooon
Im sure there will be stuff to post in no time but important thing is I am still drawing lots behind the scenes!

My life drawings from my very first life drawing class!!!!!... they are so bad I could cry! lol
They were drawn massive so they look a little better in person but still.
Its a beginners life drawing course so I was hoping we would all be on equal footing but I'm clearly the worst there by a country mile.
Man all this Villpu/Kchen etc work I have done and I still draw like a total novice
10 week class each week I will upload and I best dam improve!!!!

Don't feel bad about your life drawing. They actually turned out pretty nice! It takes time before you can put together all you've learned with the studies to actually make it mean something. I'm sure by the end of the class you'll be well on your way. I'm hoping to finally get my butt into a figure drawing session eventually too. I think nothing ever quite substitutes for actual life drawing.

Second one went really badly. I mean REALLY badly, as if I had never drawn anything before. Not even worth taking a pic of and posting. Hopefully this Thurs will go better. Wish drawing was not so bloody demoralizing all the time! Back to basics for studying tomorrow.

Don't feel too bad man, everyone gets demoralized and life drawing is really hard (at least you're out there getting it done, that's more than you can say for me haha). I think it's great that you put so much emphasis on gesture, it's one of those things that seem to take 30 minutes to learn the basics and a lifetime to master. It'll definitely pay off to put the work in on it early on, but remember to keep things varied (another piece of advice I should apply to myself). Keep working hard, I bet you'll learn a ton from the life drawing classes!

Hey! Not sure if you check on replies, so I thought I'd post this link here too:
I don't actually have the books (YET), but these videos have been super super helpful to me with my gesture studies. If you are having trouble with gesture, I'd give it a try. To subscribe it's like $10 a month. I'm sure the books would also be good. Mike Mattesi is awesome as I'm just now starting to find out.
Anyhow, what you can hope to learn from lessons about force is "wholeness" and also how to make broad/forceful strokes. I guess the best way I can describe it is just that it's a much more engaging experience when I do gesture drawing now. It's not just about looking at the angles... it's about feeling the pose and the weight and the angles. Oh well, look into it and see what you think. It's really helped me out a lot so far, though.

Drawing from life is different from drawing from a technique book (Bridgman etc.) or a Photograph. There's space that needs to be interpreted, you're dealing with three-dimensions now. The transition is going to be feel kind of weird, but this is an essential part of adding that 3-d kick to all of your artwork. Think more about the techniques you're picking up during the process, less about what you see as a finished product. You're learning how to take life and break it into shapes. How to draw what is 3d using a 2d space (A photograph has already been set into a 2d space).

Hey Syrella, thanks for the suggestion. I actually have Mattesi's book and its probably my favorite to do gesture studies from. The text really confuses me though some of it just seems like gibberish. I will check out the vids though

Starting doing a little more shading so you can get all you can out of these classes. Life studies are intended to push your forms out more. If you stick to just the drawing stage you won't be getting as much bang for your buck. Even if it turns out really bad, make these mistakes now so you won't have to later. The more you do it, the more you fumble, the more you get to correct yourself. Train yourself to notice small changes in value, the more range you can put in a drawing the more appealing it'll be. Work all those grays in between black and white, Values are going to define and refine

Hey Ixallus, Im really trying I dont actually have clue how to shade with natural media which should be evidently clear.
creeptool .. it was a really brilliant course. Its not really for beginners which is why I am going to revisit all my notes and start from the beginning after some more perspective and general draftsmanship improvements. It has definitely improved my 3d work. It also gave me a base for studying art with disciple which is exactly what I was hoping for but that is more about how you decide to approach the material. There really is a life time worth of study. Note that its not a drawing course and you dont actually learning drawing there though.
Scott REALLY knows his stuff I can say that much
and now a Completly shit life drawing from my class yesterday. Need more time to study. MORE TIIIME!
In the mean time I'm doing some industrial design exercises for perspective drawing

Treat it like digital essentially, what tool are you using?? i usually lay down a base value because the paper i use is white. If you're using a nuetral color paper then a white color pencil can be used for highlights. Use the nuetral color as a half tone. Work in layers and save your high lights and super darks for right near the end.
