    This is a kickass topic. I guess 'desert' refers more to the landscape than to the ship, but since I was curious about rendering ice/water interaction, I placed the scene in a sort of isolated cove instead of a dry place.

    Ah! This topic is FANTASTIC! It reminds me of a few of my favourite pieces by Aivazovsky, Church, and Caspar Friedrich!

    Aivazovsky's paintings are particularly magnificent references for man o' wars and maritime landscapes. Church's iceberg paintings will top any photograph from Antarctica in my opinion...

    hekatoncheir: I got a comment on similarities with Friedrich as well when I posted my wip on facebook. I'm ashamed to say I wasn't really familiar with his work because it's fantastic stuff

    First digital sketch based on some scribbles on paper. The Terror by Dan Simmons is a great reference read for this topic (if you can read fast, you might be able to finish the 1000p book before the deadline)
