Silent Hill 4 (9 minute long trailer!)

    -Intrsructions-

-First, go here, and enter the flash site: http://www.konamityo.com/sh4/

-After the intro (you're not missing much by skipping it) click "site navigation" on the bottom bar.

    -Click the square labeled "M"

-Click "E3 trailer" and watch the short clip from the trailer...after this, the flash movie window will prompt you with a link for you to download the entire trailer. (Get the 80 meg version, obviously.)

After you do all this, you will enjoy a shape most wondrously strange.

***Spoilers...you probably shouldn't read this if you haven't watched the trailer yet.***

A few things to note about the new game, and the trailer:

-The plot of the new game is that the main character wakes up and finds himself a prisoner in his own apartment. His door is bolted shut via a series of elaborate locks, and a metal sheet covers his window. His only connection(s) to the outside world are a radio, a peephole into his neighbor's apartment (little nod to hitchcock there), and the peephole in his door. After five days of isolation and misery, a he finds a gaping hole in the wall of his bathroom, and stepping through, finds himself in Silent Hill.

-The game features first-person perspective for when you're in the 'hub' of your apartment, but third-person perspective for whenever you move around Silent Hill.

-Unlike previous Silent Hill games, the monsters are no longer all dehumanized monstrosities as they were once before...a huge amount of effort has gone into making the facial features of most of the creatures that pursue you seem human, yet terribly inhuman. Bodies of victims (usually strewn about in grotesque surrealist "body art"-a Silent Hill staple) also carry a similar amount of detail in their facial features, thus triggering an emotive response in the player.

-One of the more interesting new monsters are "ghosts" of sorts that float about after you like underwater marionette puppets, dragging their feet behind them, and pushing through walls (leaving a sticky black residue as they do so) to get to you...they cannot be killed, but can be temporarily warded off via torches, special bullets, and a pair of relic weapons that the character eventually comes into possession of.

-The trailer makes use of a motion-captured "handheld camera" to make the environments portrayed seem more realistic. The cinematics in the game apparently use this as well, as does the first-person perspective from the POV in the apartment. The third-person camera apparently makes use of fixed or "tracking" camera angles, and an over-the-shoulder style...sort of like the older games did, but much more intuitive and frequent.

-Unlike previous Silent Hill games, there is now a health counter on the screen, as well as an onscreen inventory that may be cycled through. Additionally, the character can only carry a limited supply of weapons at a time.

-One of the NPCs that follows you can be equipped with weapons, and fight for herself alongside you.

-The game's cinematics appear to be using a little bit of live-action footage here and there for artistic effect. This I wholeheartedly approve of, since it lends itself well to the style of the game.

-In the earlier part of the trailer, look carefully in one of the hotel windows...something odd happening.

-We see a live-action flash of a pine-tree-ringed lakeside. Could it possibly be the location for the live-action Silent Hill movie?

    Hey Dan,
I pressed the "M" button and nothing happened.

It doesn't matter, I saw the shorter trailer a few days ago, this game is gonna be great! The 3rd one was really good, had some very disturbingly scarey shit. Some of those rooms towards the end, wow. This one looks even more well done! Can't wait! So many games to buy.

I had the same problem with the M button not working. So... I explored around with the other available options and eventually ended up in the bathroom where it worked.

    It is downloading now.
