CHoW#273 :: Xena the warrior princess - Redesign

    Character of the Week #273
Xena the warrior princess - Redesing

    Redesign Xena the warrior princess

    DEADLINE: SUNDAY 1st January 2012, 9PM GMT+1
    Check your timezone!

I bet everyone knows Xena the warrior princess, and those who doesnt, shame on you! This week's topic is self-explanatory: redesign this famous fantasy warrior princess to a whole new level! You can add Gabrielle into entry too if you like. Be creative with this, im leaving this topic quite open for interpretation!

    The Guidelines:
    • Can be only female (duh)
    • theme and setting is fantasy
    • Try not to stray too far from the original idea but dont make an exact copy of the original one either

    THE RULES
In addition to the brief, if you do not follow these rules, you will not be included in the poll.
    • Files must be named: CHoW#273_Username
(Files with any other names such as final.jpg or even chow273final.jpg will not be accepted)
    • Finals must be posted in the finals thread BEFORE the deadline
    • Final post must include the CHoW number and the artists username at the bottom of the image
    • At least 3/4 of the focus character must be visible
    • Final images must be accompanied with a basic character sheet in a separate image
Character sheets should at the very least show a sketch of the front and back of the character and a couple of early thumbnails/silhouettes.
    • Follow the brief!

I'll confess, all I know about Xena is that Lucy Lawless was in it. I went off in search of more character description and this is what I found:

Xena is the protagonist of the story, and the series depicts her quest to seek redemption for her past sins as a ruthless warlord by using her formidable fighting skills to help people. Xena was raised as the daughter of Cyrene and Atrius in Amphipolis, though the episode "The Furies" raised the possibility that Ares, might be Xena's biological father. She has a brother who is dead; she visits his grave to speak with him in "Sins of the Past." In Hercules, during her two first episodes, Xena was an outlaw, but in the third (and last), she joins Hercules to defeat Darphus, who had taken her army. Once accompanied by her lover Borias and known as the "Destroyer of Nations," she is accompanied by the young Gabrielle she become "Defender of the Elijans," and of numerous unnamed others. Aware that the character of Xena had been very successful among the public, the producers of the series decided to create a spin-off series based on her adventures.

The character Gabrielle, introduced in the first episode, becomes Xena's greatest ally; her initial na´vetÚ helps to balance Xena and assists her in recognizing and pursuing the "greater good".

The most beautiful thing we can experience is the
mysterious. It is the source of all true art and all
science. He to whom this emotion is a stranger, who
can no longer pause to wonder and stand rapt in awe,
is as good as dead: his eyes are closed.

Awesome topic! I did this recently in traditional ink wash and had a similar idea of a warrior princess with more emphasis on the princess part. I'll try to take part and work on something new but for now here's this:

    Here's where I'm going design-wise,

I'm thinking it needs more badd-ass, but I'm done for today.

RyNSWOrLD - I like the stuff that's going on around her shoulders.

Sleep tight, and keep those updates coming!

The hilarious cable TV quality was not enough to save Xena for me. I just popped open a couple episodes on youtube, and immediately began giggling. Even back then, I wasn't sure if i should be taking the show seriously or not.

I remember her having a metal disc of some sort that she use to throw. I recall that it was more of submission weapon that would stun enemies. I liked the idea of Xena using a bola this time around to wrap up her foes, plus that shit is one letter away from bolo (which as we all know is the coolest looking neckwear ever).

    Love them redheads.

The quality of some of this stuff compared to mine just makes me want to throw my computer against the wall and cry into a bowl of Cocoa pops. There's something up with that hand but I just can't figure it out.

First take at CHoW, whipped this up earlier this morning right after I saw this topic. Tried taking it a little further with the body type and gear. My vision was a modern-day or future Xena as a mercenary. Rich girl with too much money and time on her hands I guess.

    Any thoughts?

Pixeltuner: #2 is the best. It has the most personality. Its also the only one that is not standing in a generic static pose... just my opinion though.

These activities have always seemed a bit intimidating to me because of the relatively short time window (hey, i'm slow) and the amazing talent showcased by everyone involved, but this time I'll take a chance and see if I can finish my piece by sunday!

Since the show took place in a classical rather than medieval setting, I chose to stick to simpler designs for reference - pictured below is a representation of Sarmatian battle gear - and I think I'll be going for a somewhat cartoonish look. I also suggest to take a gander at this blog for some bonus refs.

    anyway, here's a quick sketch.

    I'm really enjoying everyone's approach.

Hueonpao, that sketch cracks me up. I love it.

Here's a WIP for my redesign. A little more off he cuff...letting it come together a little more organically (which means that it will take forever). Didn't finish Stalker, maybe I can finish this one. We'll see. But feet, man. They're tough to draw.

And, of course, my WIP comes fully packaged with implied lesbian undertones. How could it not?

I should be working on my school portfolio, but this brief was calling my name...

Trying to preserve some Greek undertones with hint of a medieval.
