Messing around with the armor and hair still. I'd like to hear a few people's thoughts on what they think is working.

    Have the outline down.
Not too sure about her right leg. The foreshortening looks abit off
Any thoughts would be a great help

The most beautiful thing we can experience is the
mysterious. It is the source of all true art and all
science. He to whom this emotion is a stranger, who
can no longer pause to wonder and stand rapt in awe,
is as good as dead: his eyes are closed.

Kafka Dreams - I don't think its the foreshortening, but rather the placement of the leg. Right now it looks like she has wider hips than an elephant. Moving the leg upwards and to the right should do the trick.

Also, her face expression kinda looks like that of one of those inflatable chicks intended for less-than-savoury practices. No offense

Kafka Dreams- I agree with Suneater, but I think that the foreshortening may be a bit off also. I think you would see less of the lower leg and heel part of the foot, since it would be obscured by the knee, which is closest. Ideally, it would be mostly the round part of the knee and the toe end of the foot, which can very easily go amputee... Best of luck!

Razwit- the only suggestion I can see at this point is that she looks a bit like her chin is jutting out. faces curve with the roundness of the skull, and yours looks just a bit flat. I would fix this best by tilting it away from the viewer a bit more. I find it helps to try and put myself in the pose when I am trying to figure things out. Good luck!

I LOVE Xena. My male roommate dressed up last year as her for Halloween, and I was really looking forward to taking part in this one since I am on winter break! But, it looks like I will be out of town for the rest of the week, and have no time boo. Awesome topic though! and I wish everyone the best!

    warrior princess CA

Hi there. Im showing WIP. I got to admit, that I somehow strayed from the original concept, but I really dont like it. Non of it. I mean, hell, there werent even royal families in ancient Greece. For me "warrior princess" means something a way different. Something fantasy, fairy tale like...I dont mind if I dont make it to finals because of this.

Inspired by Zelda and Alice in wonderland movie.

Music - Paramore, Courage my love - not sure whether it actually had any influence...or whether anybody cares But, well, whatever...

Kafka Dreams - I would say that the foreshortening issue is with her knee. You wouldn't see as much of her lower leg as is shown, since the knee is jutting toward the viewer and is larger, obscuring it. You'd see the knee-top and some of the front end of the foot beneath it. I would be careful though, because it can go nub-leg really fast. I love the movement in the hair that you are creating though! Best of Luck, and hopefully that helped a little.

Razwit- This looks like you are off to a great start. There seems to be some sort of disconnect with her head-neck though. Her body is angled and her face is more straight-on, making it seem a bit like she is sticking her chin out.

I wish I could take part in this one! I love Xena! I've taken down nearly half a dozen pages in sketchy ideas, but none of them are really worth posting. I will be away I wish everyone luck, and I wanted to say what great topic this is!

Parsakoira: I'm really interested to see how yours turns out. We don't get to see traditional entries very often. Right now, its a bit too red/orange for my tastes, but that could just be the lighting of the photograph?

Timmi-o-Tool: It's coming along great! And nice job with the proportions; there wasn't any hesitation discerning her age.

Some progress. I recently watched one of Feng Zhu's videos, and I wanted to experiment some more with photo textures.

Kafka Dreams- the knee would be closer to the viewer, obscuring most of the lower leg. I think your problem is that you are trying to show too much of her shin/calf. If it was coming at you and tucked beneath her, you would most likely see a very large knee and the smaller front portion of the foot beneath. I would be careful though, its a thin line between foreshortened and amputee. I find it helps me to understand the movement of a pose better if I try it myself. That being said, I love the movement of her hair, and I think this will be a great piece!

I've been working on stuff all day, looking at armour, doing sketches (these sketches were photographed, like the last one, with my laptop camera).
My last one wasn't very Xena-ish, so I tried again.

    Update.

Fiddled a little with the design and worked out the final pose. Liking what everybody else has done so far, keep 'em coming!

    Hey pal
First of all, welcome to concept art, the idea of this site is to help you get better, so try not to be insulted by anything anyone says: This is not to say you are terrible and everyone will say bad things about your work, far from it, you will get praise where necessary too
Quick question, and don't take this the wrong way, but the shape of the head and the elongation of the feet and neck would lead me to believe your character is of alien origin, was that deliberate? If not then you need to gather together some references and spend a while sketching things anatomy-wise. If it was, well the theme specifically says fantasy and aliens are more science fiction, so your work wouldn't be counted.
Apart from the breasts, your character's physique is very manly, there is more curving in a female form. Also, it is bow-legged which again, could be intentional.
    Hope this helps

Here's an update, I had trouble with the sword (which is why I haven't moved on much since last time), but I just can't figure out what's wrong with the skirt-thingy, I think the contrast between the studs and the leather bits could be toned down, but I dunno... Any advice?
I'm gonna lower the arm, don't worry.

tehmeh: Lovely values and colors! My only crit is that the back of her head seems flat.
    smokenmirrors: Badass!
RyNSWOrLD: Looking good so far! I think the problem with the sword is that it's too short (both the blade and the hilt). The studs, while they could be a bit darker as you suggested, shouldn't appear as circles on each strip of her skirt. As you move out from the center strip to the left or right, the studs should gradually become more and more like thin ovals rather than remain perfect circles. Right now, they appear as if they're floating, not imbedded in the skirt.

Hiya folks, some awesome starts from people, cant wait to see the finished pieces. here's my wip. I always imagined Zena to be more Mongolian, stout, muscular, not at all glamorous, able to whip anyone's ass.. Hoping to finish this one off by today..

tehmeh: Awesome colours. The lower limb, the tibia portion seems a bit to long, and her thigh portion short. Similar issue with the hand, except lower limb feels shorter, unless you trying to foreshorten it, its not reading right yet.

tempest-haze: Interesting lighting situation, I would maybe adjust it so I get more light on her face and torso, and show off all that beautiful design on her armour. Maybe more of a slant light across her??Unless you are planning another element, like an enemy around and she's waiting in the shadows..

smokenmirrors- that pose looks awesome, waiting to see the finish.
