    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    ROUND #242, FREESTYLE!

    topic:

    ROUND#242, FREESTYLE!

well, since its the end of the year, i thought it would be a good time to bring back the good old freestyle round.

no rules except the normal cow rules this time. make anything you want, make something based on a previous topic, or on a topic you've always wished we would have done. it's entirely up to you.

but, in order to give some structure to the voting. voting will be based on how creative your idea for a creature is. so really think outside the box, and come up with something crazy!

also. this will be a 2 week cow!

    requirements this cow...

    - be as creative as possible!

    Deadline:

    January 4th 9:00pm PST (GMT -8 )

This will be interesting, other cow rounds you get a few initial ideas so it makes it a little easier, but for this round my mind just went pld:
2 weeks is great cuz it gives me time to think about it, though!

    silhouettes!
I don't really know which one I like better, each has their own appeal, will probably make more later on...
1-originally wanted to make a pretty looking creature kinda like a mix between a peacock and a raptor, kinda failed at the pretty part, but turned out to be quite a cool looking critter anyways...this is probably my favourite of the four though, I like these kinds of creatures
2-this was initially going to be some kind of insectoid, then turned into something completely different, I like the way it's face turned out, it has that creepy look to it
3-was thinking along the lines of some kind of whale/living coral/giant jellyfish/something very fat
4-probably the weakest design of the bunch, looks like some kind of mutated fly

here's my first sketch. I think i'll keep this theme and try different creatures.
    more stuff coming up today!

Rob Powel i like 3 and 7, maybe you should try some variations! Maybe choosing a theme can help you too

Same creature, different ideas. I dont think i'll keep this tribal look on it.
I'd be glad to hear some feedback

Lehmann, both versions are looking pretty sweet! I actually really like the tribal look. If you want to continue with this design, I'd say just push it as far as you can. Make it crazy. Right now, but for the extra legs and tribal accouterments, it's looking rather...normal. Go nuts! Perhaps think of another species of animal with traits that you could splice into this design.

lancer_idenoure: Really like this, very unique and well designed so far. I can see this thing climbing between pairs of branches and picking off small insects and such for food. Looking forward to more progress on this, I actually like the head shape as it is.

APW: Sometimes rolling with whatever works is the best solution lol. Maybe put some more patterns/repetition in the anatomy, all of the different body parts don't quite seem to have a sense of unity yet. I realize it's in the early stages though, keep it up!

Rob Powell: 5 looks the best so far even if it is very plant-like (not sure if it completely breaks the rule). Maybe it could work spliced with a few more insect elements.

Lehmann: Great start, always like seeing avian creatures. I guess if you want a "tribal" look, researching a specific tribe/culture and understanding what makes that 'look' might help with fleshing out more ideas. I like the bird structure, but I agree that it looks a bit ordinary still.

All of these are looking great, I think I'll see if I can come up with something worthwhile for this prompt lol.

hi guys! since i missed Great White Stone Crusher i decided to go with it
thought of doing mutated gorilla type creature, probably with a bit of goat and warthog dna. uses horns to crush rocks and stones.

    sorry for awful pink.

Betty86: thats got some nice character to it. just watch out for making it too humanoid. try hunching it over more.

Lehmann: nice concept man. if you can pull off the 4 legs with the bird body that'll be really cool. hope you have time to finish

Rob Powell: im likin 1,2, and 6.

APW: looking good. id like to see you try and push the scale when you start painting and make that guy look massive

and si_swe, i know what you mean, it really flew by! D: feels good to be back

    heres the final sketch..

lancer: liking your second sketch, big improvement from the first, very cool idea

Lehmann: agree with other people's thoughts basically, don't be afraid to incorporate elements from other animal groups into your design, also the tribal version looks cool, but just watch how you use the accesories, I'm not sure we can use them this round.

Noun: thanks, my basic idea with that particular one, was something that mimics the trees in it's environmen, such as stick insects

Betty86: nice sketch, as with Lehmann, don't be afraid to push that design into crazyland. Make use of those creature designing skills!

couldn't help it did some more
Just trying to get some of my ideas out there, though a few of these had I no clue what I was doing until the main silhouette was nearly complete.

lancer_idenoure and Rob Powell thanks for advice

decided to play a bit more with sketch, added some spikes and extra eye in the middle, changed shape of horns. tried to hunch him a bit more too, ended up fat but i think looks better now. i will start lines today

also about humanoid thingy - i want him to resemble gorilla, move around by knuckle-walking.

Attachment 1389700Hey all, this is my first post/attempt at doing one of these weekly challenges, though I have been lurking for a while.
This is what I've currently got in progress, I call it a Masked Man-Eater. Still in the early stages, and if anyone could provide me with some constructive feedback to help me along, I would really appreciate it.

Reddcarp- First off, Welcome to the Challenges! I'm relatively new as well. As for your sketch, I'll say it's a little hard to critique it in this early stage. I'm having difficulty seperating the beast from the background. It is a little amorphous. Perhaps adding color in the later stages will help?

I've got to get my WIP up for this challenge!

The Catfinch - Mistake of Science!

So, I'm giving myself permission to be silly this week, because honestly, my concept creature is absurd - but no less terrifying for that reason.

This was a creature a room mate and I dreamed up in college, but only ever doodled cartoon style. I've never actually tried to figure out its anatomy or its characteristics beyond it being a genetic splice between a cat and a finch. So, this has been a lot of fun, needless to say.

The cleaner line drawing is the second draft minus arms and a tail, because I'm still debating what to do with them. The wings from the first sketch are okay, but they seem too predictable.

The fat little corner doodle in the first sketch was just me being silly.

    Hey folks,
I figured I should drop off a WIP. This is a piece that will eventually be entering into a long-term pseudo-museological project I've been putting together. I figure since it's freestyle, that gives me the opportunity to design something that's simultaneously for this and that project. The creature is a Mid-Sized omnivore, but it's primary food consists of a bioluminescent vegetation which gives the creature's sensory organs a bioluminescent glow. It may also expel it's eggs/sperm in a bioluminescent gas form. I have yet to determine that.

Anyway, I'm going with a really muted palette for this, sort of oily colours with the exception of the bioluminescent aspects. It's at a pretty early stage in all aspects: I have yet to start really rendering the creature/lighting and I'm still very much in the process of adding vegetation, but the overall design work has been done. Have at ye' critiquing destroyers of hopes!

    interesting stuff coming together peeps...

well decided it was time to start working on a creature...I liked 2 and 6 the best out of all the thumbs I made (I liked 1 as well but not for this topic, not weird enough), I ended up splicing them together in a way, still need a few more design element to tie everything together better, also a little iffy by the horizontal spike on the head, also thinking about switching the front 4 arms around, and adding some more creative feet...
if anyine has any suggestions I'm all ears...cuz I'm pretty sure this is still very far from the final design...
