These environments you've been doing lately are brilliant! I can almost feel the atmosphere in "Landing." I also really enjoy the burst of color in "There Alone." A lot of your work tends toward a similar (albeit effective) color palette, and this one really breaks out of it with the intense oranges and yellows in the trees and the grass. I'm really interested in the process of layering you show in your process images. One thing I need to improve at is learning how to work the whole image in multiple passes, without getting too bogged down in a single area. It'd be interesting to hear more of your thoughts regarding your process--what you generally try to accomplish at each stage of the painting, etc. Looking at your process images, it seems like you have a very effective workflow figured out, and I'd love to hear more about it.
I would struggle to describe a consistent process, because my methods change with each image. However, I do recommend that you work the entire surface up all at once, in "layers". You should concern yourself most with the large shapes and masses of the composition. If these basic shapes do not read well, no amount of rendering will save a painting.
In my last image, my foundation shapes were my primary concern. By this I mean their composition and value relationships. The line drawing, you can see briefly in the process shots, was an attempt to define these shapes.
From this point, I render details throughout. Basically subdividing the foundation shapes into smaller, more identifiable shapes. The details are somewhat arbitrary, especially in an all natural landscape such as this one. It's a good idea to spend the most time on your focal point. This will naturally enhance it's focus, and lead you toward finish.
Lastly I will use layer adjustments to enhance the colors and values. I will also clean up my brushstrokes, so that they look as clean and graceful as possible. This is generally a matter of covering multiple strokes with just one stroke.

Hey Lane it's really good to be able to see and read your short stories and processes behind your works. Like all the other posters I have enjoyed them all and you have a great imagination. A few stand out favorites of mine are The Hopper Mech, just love the idea and look of this, whether it would function in reality or not. The Tribe Kids is a great looking picture and the story just adds to that. Defend your nuts looks cool and has great humor.
It's always a pleasure to be able to look at well skilled artist's work and I have to give you 5 stars for an excellent sketchbook which I think is only going to keep surpassing itself.
Oh man, amazing paintings! I love your narrative pieces a lot.
And thank you for posting those short stories. I love the Wizard's Apprentice. And the last post is very helpful. It's exactly what my problem tends to be.

Marshland condos looks fantastic--I love the boat-hulls you used in the construction of the buildings. It's cool to see the variations in your workflow in the process images. I noticed that you started with a random collage of photos and textures and (seemingly) built your shapes and palette from there, rather than starting with a line sketch. It worked brilliantly. The only critique I can come up with is that with such a bright sky in the background, and still water on the ground, I think the reflected light being cast onto the undersides of the buildings from the water would be a bit stronger, and adding a bit more rim-lighting to a couple of the edges (from that bright sky) could help the buildings and forms to stand out just a little more. Overall, though, a really strong composition, in terms of shapes, values, and colors.
