    CHoW#272 :: Stalker

    Character of the Week #272
    Stalker

    Design a stalker

    DEADLINE: TUESDAY 27th December 2011, 9PM GMT+1
    Check your timezone!

Stalker is a profession to those who are very brave or very stupid. They are guides and explorers who wander through the extremely hazardous zones full of extremely dangerous anomalies (which defies laws of matter, gravity and such) and radioactive wastelands, searching for highly valuable artifacts of alien origin. These artifacts are odd shapes and objects with weird abilities and possess dangerous powers beyond comprehension. Stalkers who return from these zones alive or with few missing body parts should be satisfied with the trip, and stalkers who return alive with artifacts should concider themselves extremely lucky. They are also regarded as criminals, and they act through secret organizations where they trade their swag to higher authorities for a large sum of money. Many scientific corporations also have their "legal" stalkers who hunt these artifacts for scientific study and technological improvement, but usually all the tests and studies conducted on the artifacts results in horrible and bizarre accidents. Life expectancy for stalkers is very short, most die in their thirties from radiation poisoning or by stepping into an anomaly by accident

For more information on the subject see:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stalker_(film)
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roadside_Picnic
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S.T.A.L...w_of_Chernobyl

    The Guidelines:
    • Can be both female or male, but preferably male
    • Theme and era is modern post-apocalyptic
    • Pay extra attention to the character design, keep in mind everything said in the description and use it to convey the design

    THE RULES
In addition to the brief, if you do not follow these rules, you will not be included in the poll.
    • Files must be named: CHoW#272_Username
(Files with any other names such as final.jpg or even chow270final.jpg will not be accepted)
    • Finals must be posted in the finals thread BEFORE the deadline
    • Final post must include the CHoW number and the artists username at the bottom of the image
    • At least 3/4 of the focus character must be visible
    • Final images must be accompanied with a basic character sheet in a separate image
Character sheets should at the very least show a sketch of the front and back of the character and a couple of early thumbnails/silhouettes.
    • Follow the brief!

If anything, one should stray far away from the STALKER games' depiction of a Stalker. Let's not fall into this trap guys and gals!
Want to join, but I don't know my schedule works out. Fun topic anyway.
Forgot to draw an AK last CHoW. Gotta do it this time.

Nice, my favourite series, RIP GSC, sad to lose such a great IP along with a great dev team... I must of idly drawn tons of Stalkers over the years of playing the games, once more into the breach!! Oh and the film is interesting as well but much different to the game! Still worth checking out!

Here's a couple of quick sketches. Anyone have a favourite of the three?

@Pixeltuner: I really like the enviro hazard suit influence in all of your designs. I've been trying to weigh up that balance between having a design that looks radiation proof while still looking a little cobbled together of bits and pieces. I'm not quite sure about the pose in your second post, the legs don't look quite as stable compared to the top right pose of your thumbs. Great helmet and suit design though, very cool!

@Gadbury: Awesome piece so far! I love all the baggage you've loaded him up with, makes the post apocalypse feel like a real hassle.

@Parsakoira: Yours is amazing man. The design of the character and the mood you've set are working so well! Having warm and a cool light sources in shot looks great. I Can't wait to see to see where you go with this one.

    Stalker, very early sketches

Ahoy there! It's been a long time since I have checked in here, but I am keen to get back on the wagon and am already feeling very inspired by this topic! Have done some super rough sketches.. I know it says *preferably* male but I want to throw one in there representin' the ladeez.

So I'm thinking the image will be of her coming across a deep, mysterious hole in the desert, and she is standing above it contemplating her options.

I like the idea of her having already crossed paths with some of these "radioactive alien anomalies".. and maybe it'll be a District 9 sorta thing where she has "caught" alien-ness or something like that..

    Anyway, early days! I'm excited!

Ebersol: Thanks, the second sketch more like a big thumb actually so it's pretty faulty here and there. Working on some more ideas atm.

I keep thinking overalls or jumpsuits for this.
And then halo jumpers and radiation sickness.

Hello, first time submitting here, had some free time at work and thought i would enter this, couldn't really be bothered with anatomy reference but i do know the characters left arm is screwed up which i do plan to fix.

His hand will be holding one of these so called alien artifacts which will be glowing -> light source.

Tried to go with a modern/neo-modern take on indian jones since thats what the brief reminded me of. It looks like everyone had the idea of gasmasks in there heads which makes me think it may be a bit cliche. I hope the artificial / bionic limb isn't too 'futuristic' for the modern post apocalypse time setting in the brief, added it in because the brief mentioned these stalker characters often lose limbs in their 'adventures'. Added a few other bits and peices to align it to the brief like a geigometer/watchy thing on his arm and the guild/secret organisation crest on the strap buckle on his chest

More to come, good luck everyone, if anyone has some tips or advice for me regarding my painting please let me know, i maybe a bit too lazy to make big changes but it would be good to know for future pieces.

    More sketches...

I had the idea that it might be cool to show my character in the middle of a moment of crisis.. I imagined that maybe she has gotten stuck somehow due to one of these "physical anomalies".. like maybe a rock wall closed in around her arm when she was trying to reach something in a crevasse.. Too silly? Aanyway I imagined her contemplating cutting off her arm to free herself, much like that guy in that movie did..

Anyway, I felt like it was getting maybe a bit too much like an illustraton as opposed to a piece of concept art.. so I tried again. I kinda like where it is headed now...

    Stalker

Two or three themes came to me when I read the profile so I kinda worked them together and this is what I came up with ...

    @aedan9 Nice snood.
@Pixeltuner I like the one where he's checking his nails and taking a dump.
@peterhurman Stalker was great. Nice sketch, his near leg looks a little dainty?
@Parsakoira YES! Crotchless flight suits. It's about goddamn time.
    @Ebersol Like #2 best.
@K-Mo Love the one with the green eye.
@glam Like the two with green goggles. They all seem to have um... very well stuffed drawers.
@Millz digging the accessories, anatomy needs tightening up. His upper arm is all bicep, knees are too low.
@Razorleaf Like the rifle. Proportions are a bit squat, looks like a child. Not sure if intentional? Also falling backwards a little.
@8smoku8 This is cool, reminds me of akira. Hand is teeny.

@Gadbury Awesome sketch. Think his mask is a little raccoon-like.

Given the risk:reward ratio, I don't think even the brave would be up for this job. This one goes to the desperate and deranged. The hopeless scum of society, poorly equipped, poorly thought out and with a poor grasp of the odds against success.

    Here are a few:

I liked the look of this guy: The nature of reality is warped? Nothing a helmet and a pair of waders won't fix.

My first attempt at a concept for CHoW.
    Given the uniquely Russian/Eastern European
setting of Stalker lore, I'm not really keen about
breaking the rules of the core narrative.

Ideally, I wanted my character to be ex-military,
and in this case have past experience with
certain artifacts found in the zone. Perhaps he
was in an accident while on assignment, ect.
Being former military means that it's important
to get all of the insignias and badges right.
