A relatively good place to start is Ipaintgirls.com its a guy going video tutorials on skin and other things regarding blending. also teaches toon graphics interesting videos and they were at least for a time consitantly updated.

Use soft brushes and different layers for shadows, highlights.

Do "skinstudies" , use references and just practice the color of the skin over and over.

    skin

skin tones are a combination of colors thats why if you paint with just browns it wont look right. Im not at home so i cant show you any examples right now but i will upload some later. Basically there are some things you should not do and some things you should.

    Should not:

Use black or brown to show shadow. At most shadow is blue or purple. Using black or a muddy brown will only hurt the painting.
use white. this is in general but try to stick with oranges or yellows.

    Should:

where light passes from shadow to light paint in red as (as far as i understand it) subdivision surface scattering happens..ie light scattering through the skins blood illuminating it (the blood ie red).

there are 3 general color sections of a face, top yellow, mid (including eyes nose, ears) is red, and mouth and neck is green or blue.

as a side note I almost never use blending tool in photoshop i use a muted version of the color with a low opisity to blend colors. Also I use hard brushes not soft, though based on the look your going for you will want to use soft brushes.
