    Ashley Wood's art rules.
I'm sure he'll do the MGS justice.

It will be nice to see if he actually pushes his art and makes images clear that need to be clear rather than relying on his super painterly style with crude(vs precise) drawing. I would like to see some nicely done tech stuff. Snakes hair so far ...is NOT Snakes hair.

i'm really looking forward to seeing this. do you have any idea when its slated to be published?

i don't see anything wrong with the way woods does things now. and you have to admit, that is much cooler than snakes hair in the video game. comeon, some how he's made a mullet look cool. i'm sure that takes some serious skills.

    HAHAHAHA!!!

About Ashley's work.....whether it be Ashley Wood or some other artist, comic artists with names usually have the privilage to add their own twist and style to the look of characters, etc. So Snake and others probably aren't gonna look like what we're used to. Whether thats good or bad in Metal Gears case, not sure.

I'm a huge fan of MGS (the game itself and the original concept designs done by Yoji Shinkawa) still I personally like this one too.
I have a high hopes for this project, hope I'm not wrong.

The spiky, anime style hair really bombs it imo. It just dosen't fit Snake.

Shinkawa said he couldn't do manga, but I think he's the only person capable of a cool MGS comic.

hmmm...the comic style of the comic that was in the manual booklet that came with MGS2 was really cool looking...great use of colors and nice edgy drawing style that i appreciate....the comic should look like the comic in that manual..don't you think so?

I really dig Ashley's work and I think the promo stuff looks incredible. I'm really not understanding those of you who dislike when an artist puts their own spin on something. Isn't that the great thing about artists? Their individual ways of communicating the same thing? You can still read the picture as Snake. I'm an impressionist at heart so his loose style also does it for me. To each his own though. Just lettin' Mr. Wood know he has my admiration.

hethe> You misunderstood. I'm not against an artist putting another spin on an established character. For example, I love Nobuteru Yuuki's take on the Record of Lodoss War's characters (original designs by Yutaka Izubuchi). And Kim Hyung Tae's paintings of the Street Fighter charas & Evangelion's Asuka are flat out amazing. He retains the feel of those characters, while keeping his style.

Nah, it's just this particular case that didn't work. That man on the cover isn't Snake. He looks like some terrorist . And, did I mention his Snake looks really ugly?

    Unhappy

I love allll different types of styles of artwork. BUT WTF!?

I am soo sick of these sloppy, lazy illustration works.

At the same time there is much I do like about these pages. But I would like to see a wider variety of looseness to tightness.

And goddamn I sure hope he doesn't completely B.S. allll backgrounds. This just is not just style it is also laziness and unwillingness to improve on faults, which in the end dictates the style. Ugg.

Come on Guys Bring on the hatin and disagreements.

I agree with you JOsh. It's almost like they're too sketchy and not tight enough. They're soooo close to having that finished look he has with some of his other pieces.

    IMHO...

Drawing a comic is so different from doing an illustration. The flow of the story in each panel should be clear and easy to follow. Characters should be easily identifiable etc. Dang, I think I'll get a headache if I try to read this thing... Some of the pages looks like the artist's trying to be stylish for no good reason.

this guy is lame! it looks like he is trying too hard (or too little) to be stylized. and the few panels that are detailed enough to have backgrounds look like paint overs of screen shots from the gamecube version of the game. so sad.

I never liked Ashley woods work... I will say that shot higher up on the thread above Charest' piece is nice.

    Bill Sienkiewicz rocks...

I'll have to agree to a certain extent. This stuff seems a little too loose and quick for Ashley. I wonder how many projects he's working on right now. He could be over burdened by other stuff.

However, I don't think he's a bad artist. I think he's actually very talented at setting mood and composition.

I mean check out his site:

Everybodies entitled to their own opinion though. He's gotta have something that works. He's always working on something and his stuff sells. And after he worked on Spawn and Sam & Twitch for a bit about million other comics started to "look" that way.

    Bill Sienkiewicz does rock btw.
So does Phil Hale for that matter.

For me it's just a personal taste really... I dig Phil Hale and Foster alot...they had the same Mentor Rick Berry who's work I dont like. it's all just personal taste .

Ashley has good skills...how he executes them is not the brand of tea i dig.

I think this looks great. I personally get excited about other artists interpretation of already established characters even if they change small things like...oh I don't know...the hair. I don't really see how it's a big deal that he changed it. What's the point of getting someone else to do it if they're not gonna put their own spin on it? That's my take anyway.
