    its better to take your time though..

    Hey there fellow Dutchy !

    I think you're trying a little too hard to over-dramatisize (if that's even a word) your poses. You're bending bodies and limbs to an extreme quite a lot just to make an interesting pose out of it but it takes away a lot of the natural feel of things. A lot of your characters feel very "staged", this is probably due to your figure/gesture studies seemingly all being from pre-posed models as well. I personally benefited a lot (though I won't pretend that I'm anywhere near good at it yet) from sitting at a train station and just drawing people as they are standing and waiting for their train, sipping coffee or fiddling with their phones or just staring ahead of them. They stand in a very natural way because they aren't concerned with how they are standing, which your characters usually won't be either.

    Anyway though I'm quite fascinated with your use of color and your rendering methods. To echo AllyAlbon I too would love to see some cleaner edges and more refined areas here and there, but overall you're doing pretty well . Keep it up!

    Hey Lumens,

    What Lhune said. In this aspect I also look up comic book artists and how they lay done the poses for their charcters. They usually nail the gesture and the balance/proportions of the pose right away.

    Another thing that botters me is the proportions of the face ( distance between the eyes, eye alignement/ placement) in some fo your portraits. I say in ''some'' because some others are well done ( for example #151 ). I'm sure if you pay attention more to the first minutes of your portraits you can eliminate that problem.

    Otherwise good work, I have a few things to learn form you, especially regarding values and color.

    Lhune, many thanks for the honest critique!
    Im very self conscious about my work and my own biggest skeptic, this one flew right past me.
    all of the ridiculous poses are done in the sketching phase, without ref.

    The vampire shooting gun in midair is supposed to be very exaggerated and for the sake of getting my portfolio done with limited time i wont change his pose, i will work on refining edges,ect.

    But yeah its feedback like this thats going to help get to that next level.

    Hi Tea of Doom, Thanks for the suggestion. will take a look at sequential art, aswell as masterpaintings and good moviestills.
    You are right about the portraits, i'm highly aware of that problem.
    One eye tends to be skewed and stretched. the mouth area i tend to do way too low, almost at the chin, space between nose and upperlip too short.


    I also wanted to say i read all the feedback and i'm definatly considering all the points made.
    I've made a list from all the crits i've recieved so far that are most crucial to work on for now.

    - Better edge control, less messy edges. lost and found edges,ect.

    - push my work to a tighter finish. ( no transparent brushstrokes)
    this is a matter of patience. i work really fast.

    - less detail more structure. more observational studies from life.

    - Natural looking poses and expressions.

    I'm working on a masterstudy with the intention to exercise edges, better finish and natural poses. wip.

    Some more process, i'm considering making an alternative version of the reclining lady in a different pose. the current one was refrenced closely exept the face and dress.
    The masterstudy will be continued over several sessions.

    kid_DEATH, Thanks for stopping by, you've got a very interesting aproach. almost impasto like.

    I think the other 2 guys are bots lol.

    I did some anatomy with actual pencils this time, didn't want to post this
    as i screwed up a lot. i forgot that drawings can be skewerd in perspective if you're drawing on a flat surface :o

    some of the pages are from memory, got to do more of those.
    and some figures from ref.

    This study is really nice BTW, I think it's the improved edge control that makes it really stand out.

    you could really just take a hard brush and redefine the silhouette, you know. For example, the separation between the gluteals and the leg proper, the outlines of the fabrics, and the contour of the arm, etc. It might not take very long, but it adds a lot of structure and clarity to the painting.

    Who did the original of the master's study BTW? It looks bloody awesome.

    And holy shit, you got bots posting in your sketch, that's fucking hilarious! XDDDDD

    Aahhh gorgeous studies, the horses are awesome, and quite anatomically correct too, as far as I can see.

    Have you tried to draw a walking cycle for a horse? It's so fucking tough to do, but quite useful for understanding their gesture.

    The speed paints are really cool BTW, how long did you spend on each of them? An hour each?

    Aaron, no i havent tried a walking cycle yet, good idea though.
    the speedpaints where about half hour, but only because i uses the mixer brush, which is starting to become a crutch of mine.

    so i tried to use some harder brushes this time.

    disclamer: these are studies after others artists work, like jamie jones, not mine
    I am aware that its usually not a good idea to copy other artist that arent masters. its for direct aplication. wanted to practice admospheric perspective.
