    Another robot.

I'm noticing a tendency to hide that hand! I'm going to have to nip that one quick.

This is one of those ones that I just worked on and stopped caring after a while.
I found myself going over the same planes over, and over, and over. (About 22 hours here, no joke).

To be honest, this is actually an old one that I touched up and decided to post up. I was getting into colors way to early, no real value or tone. I actually cut out pieces with the lasso tool and then tried to fill them in that way.

    Did. Not. Work.

I got a helicopter build up! Its nothing more than a online tutorial that I followed, but it was a real help in getting the workflow down.

This link will take you to the blog were you can try it out. (Just click on the blue test, and it will open a new window with the unity web player so you can try it out)

You will need the unity web player download to try it out, sorry about that.

Also, here is a snippet of a 3d environment I'm working on. Its a first, so I'm pretty excited about it. I won't be able to really push this one because it turned out that I made some really big mistakes in the beginning. Looking forward to adding more to it later!

*edit. Its not great, but I'm still a little happy because I took the time to make those textures myself (admittedly, with the help of some photoshop brushes, the top of the roof for example).

I like the 3d environment you made, but is there any way you can make it a little more realistic? I'm talking about the boulders and the ground textures.

    Dump

@BoulSoup: I could, but for now I rather make my own and get used to the workflow. If I wanted to make them more realistic then I would just take a photograph and apply that to the 3d model (along with a normal map).

Here are a few sketchbook pictures. Only the second picture, and the doodle on the right of the 3rd are recent. I don't really take much time to polish things up in my sketchbook, I rather do that in another program.

hey hey! Just to let you know I'm giving an extension to the challenge deadline if you'd like to do more to your dynamic hero pic I'd love to see a more finished piece really making it as dynamic as possible! but if you'd prefer to leave it as is for the poll no problems.

    Keep sketching!

    More 2d stuff coming soon!

I have been working with blender lately. This took me about 4 and a half hours to do while watching tutorials along the way.

Here is that 2d I promised. Now, if you look closely you will notice that some of these sketches are based of of other works I have seen in sketchbooks and I drew them to get a feel for the figure. I don't think I really stepped over an ethical line, but hey. If I did just let me know. These sketches are not in any real order, and the last one is for fun mostly.

Well 3 years isn't a long time and if your going to divide that time between 2d and 3d you have no chance of even getting close to professional. What is it that you wanna do? I would stick to that and go all out if this really is your goal.

Also the better understanding you have of the fundamentals the faster you will improve, because everything after is building on those fundamentals. So if your really struggling with something or no matter how hard you try you just cant get something looking right, its because you don't have a strong background in the fundamentals.

Good point. I'm going to have to work a lot harder than you are.

What is it that you wanna do?
Mostly 3d with the ability to sketch out ideas in 2d for the sake of clearly communicating ideas and be able to be more flexible while handling 3d workloads, if say: I ever find myself employed as an environmental 3d artist. My goal however is to get into a smaller studio. That means that diversifying is a great way to keep myself useful and get to know as many parts as the process as possible that in turn, keeps me moving forward to my real goal about 7-8 years down the line.

    -cheers.

Is that an insult? Why did you chop that part out of the sentence like I just told you, "you suck" when I didn't?

What I said was that in 3 years time if you try to do both 2d and 3d at the same time your not gunna make it, because its too much in that time. Then I said if you work on one of them mainly you would have a better chance...
