Spartan Camp #199 - 50 gestures + Optional "Caricature Study"

Spartan Camp #199 - 50 gestures + Optional "Caricature Study"

The aim is to produce 50 gestures by Sunday the 16th of October.

    - The gestures can be of anything, human, animal, cavorting capybaras.... You can draw full figures, but you can also go for heads, arms, eyes, or anything specific. All media can be used, both digital or traditional. Coloured or black/white. Quick scribbles or long studies. Imagination or referenced. Clothed or nude. Specifics are up to you!

    - In addition to this, participants can choose to do an Optional "Caricature Study", in any medium.

Additional notes on this weeks’ Optional Study:

In our series of optional studies leading up to Self Portrait Day, we will have another portrait-related study this week!

    The background:
In about two months, it will be International Self Portrait Day. Every year, this great activity has a high turnout here on conceptart.org. Take a look HERE to see last years' portraits. Because of this great opportunity, we will devote some of the upcoming optional studies to this topic. We will focus on heads, faces, anatomy, and other things related to portraiture. Not every week, of course. Just enough to prepare us for this event!

This week will be focused on caricaturization. Caricatures are interesting because they exaggerate or simplify facial features that are already there. Searching for caricatures show portraits that are clearly distorted, but still recognizable! This is key! The distortions themselves often hint at characteristics of the subject. In other words caricatures allow you a lot of freedom, but also require you to analyse your subject.

    The assignment:
Create a caricature. Specificities are yours to choose, meaning you could go with any politician, celebrity, family member or even your dog. Obviously, reference very much advised.
    *Reference/tips to be posted here*

Colour, medium, time frame, any specifics are up to you! Good luck and have fun! And feel free to ask questions!

50 poses is a challenge, but don't hurry or stress yourself reaching it! Focus on drawing, as practising is the main goal of this exercise.

Criticizing each other is highly encouraged!! Share constructive criticism, reference images and resources!! Let's help each other get better!

Come on soldiers! Flex those muscles!!

What is this Spartan Camp thing? Sorry if its a dumb question, but searching provided nothing but pages of Spartan Camp threads. Is this invite only or just jump in or what?

No invite needed, just jump right in. My understanding is that it's a challenge/exercise for anyone who wants the challenge/exercise!

MusicMetalHead: It's the latter Just put some gesture stuff here and you will be okay. It's a nice place IMO. The rules aren't strict, I don't remember when I was able to do 50 proper gestures... You may draw some heads or other stuff and if you draw a mere 12 figures and nothing else, no one will frown upon you. You probably get some opinions and tips, especially from Anthis. Jump in now and welcome
(It's basically a weekly activity but when Anthis is too busy to create the new thread, like now, the deadline gets extended and it's two weeks)

Hi people I'm quite inactive this week too and when I happen to draw something, that's usually not gesture but I will bring some soon

I dig the optional, I will look at some Tom Richmond caricatures again, they are very inspiring to me. Then I try to do my own

    Some junk
I guess my color perception isn't as bad as I thought, but I need to work on my rendering, so the next things I'll do will probably in b&w
The Law of Fives states simply that: All things happen in fives, or are divisible by or are multiples of five, or are somehow directly or indirectly appropriate to 5

ooh! nice; caricature! I like that.

lets have a look @ what's up here already..
obacmar; I still dont know what IM is but its definitel rocking 4 you. love that angle on 8. I suppose the un-numbered lady would be called more of a parody then a caricature; its still great though. lifting her boobs like that. gambata! more on you brother; yeah I think you might v been making him a little too fat near the end. still, that's good. we're looking to go caricature after all.
hmm bridgman always want me to take out that book and draw those arms too. good job

samming: got some great asses and hips there. the figures seem to go a bit plasicy @ the arms though. not sure it's the rendering. more like you didnt really put much attention to that part. maybe leave it out and just draw what you''re focussed on next time..

    here's mine!
hmm..I forgot to number them again.
    1,baby 2,baby, 3...toddler.

Some quick gestures, and an attempt at a caricature. Not really succeeding there.

    ---------
ashess - really like the sketch of your son (7) making the "UGH" face. Not sure if it qualifies exactly as a caricature but the expression is really free and well captured. I love the sketches of yer baby! You're doing well with the head and bum/legs, how're you feeling about the chest/torso?

Obacmar - Hell yes Bridgeman! I've been plowing through that book over the past few weeks. It's taking a long time, I'm trying to memorize the names for all the muscles and such. @_@ Great studies you got there.

samming - You've got the lower parts of the body rendered nicely, but the upper portions on your women are flattening out. Your color perception seems fine too! Awesome paintings.

Hello there! I have just started doing anatomy and I found out this stuff is really something else. I`m not very good in it and just starting with the basics, and kind of new to this forum as well, so i`m not really sure if I`m allowed to do this. But i`ll do it anyway

I would really like to join this camp because I want to be awesome in this stuff. I`m hoping that I can join and can have some critics about how to become better in drawing anatomy and drawing in general.

I am starting out with the book from Andrew Loomis:
If you are proud of what you did yesterday,
    you haven`t done today

@drygrass: haha. ye it didnt turn out quite as planned by I sort of got his angry-serious expression. and ye, I guess I should focus on those chests for a while. good tip ^^. reall like yourbox rendering btw. 8 and 12 are really well caught.

@Talis: hello and welcome. I cant really comment on your work. the pictures you posted are so big I cant make anything out. could you maybe re-upload them with a max height/width of 800 pixels?

well, here's my next batch. I did these really fast but did come back to finish them later. then I tried a caricature of my baby (51)

the good the bad the ugly

    hai evry 1

For today I was very strict with myself. 1 min. No-rework, post everything, no excuses, hehe. I got these, and I don't want to number them, as they are to be viewed as whole. It seems to be mostly a consistency exercise.
    using pixelovely
    In case your wondering

Ashess Love your direction as always. The notes and artifacts, give the sketches so much personality. 33 is a real cool one, your baby side profile work is really strong.
Drygrass Kinda inspired by your style today don't know if I'm rdy for 30 sec yet. I like your face study
    Talis Nice start buddy,<Looomis! looomis!>
