Quick facts? Almost finished my second year studying Fine Arts - Painting and Sculpture. I am deeply in love with the rapid movement and stylistic wonders of concept art. I hate that I'm still too dependent on reference images to make a painting work.

HI ActonArt welcome to the sketchbook form. I have to commiserate with you on the crutch that reference images have become. Having turned to observation to study the figure my own work from imagination doesn't always satisfy my critical side any longer. but you and I and others like us will work through it here together. I suppose their will always be a lag of our imaginations behind our observational skills, but as our studies improve so will our work from imagination. I'm looking forward to seeing you post more work, this first piece has such saturated and stimulating colors, a great start keep it up.

Leari: Thanks... as for the hair... hmm... I think it might look a bit "pasted on"... will need to work on that.
CarmenJudy: You know what my biggest "annoyance" is? Every time I mention my reluctance with reference one of my lecturers will look at me funny and say, something along the lines of "everyone does it"/ "Whatever you need to get the job done" or "Even the old masters were doing it. Grids for proportions. Projectors." I get all that... but it is horribly restricting... alas.
So I'm back on the gesture drawing wagon. It has been a while... But anyway, I've done quite a few pages of 30sec posemaniacs and then a few pages from my own head. I'm just sticking a few on here because I don't think you care to see all of my gestures.
And some quickies of ms. Cruella deVille in preparation for an evil, yet sexy, pin up.
And, another painting I'm busy with for school. It's proving a bit tricky because the reference is a very old photo of my grandmother. the figure and the background merge into each other all the time and getting that clarity of line is a bit of a bitch.
Oh.. I want to post these three as well. They are also part of my school work. The concept I'm working with is the idea of distance between families thanks to immigration etc.

Okay, the first bunch, I need to explain a bit. It's my "post modern" project for my painting class. The concept behind it deals with distance, immigration and identity. Basically, My family immigrated from South Africa to Canada. After a year, I realised that Canada was not and was never going to feel like "home" to me. South Africa, even with all its problems, will always have my heart. So I came back. Upset a few people. In any event, this project deals with all of that. I am being deliberately expressive. I am being deliberate in leaving out the details of the faces. The first painting is still WIP. Big. The others are little, "scrapbooking cutout" style. They're all in oils.
The next is my Master Copy painting. It's an A3. I am almost done, just a few pockets need tightening up... and then I need to glaze. Caravaggio's Judith Slaying Holofernes.
