    - the child form must be beautiful, and not have any physical attributes of a violent fighting creature.

    - the adult form must be ugly, and must have acquired some kind of biological weaponry like spikes, horns, claws, fangs, etc. Through its metamorphosis.

    - the child and adult forms must share some physical traits so that you can tell that they are of the same species.

    Concept: Canis Pagurus - "Crab Hound"

    Immature Canis Pagurus are often mistaken for harmless creatures, as early on they feed solely on low-lying foliage found near marshes and other water-bound areas. Young Canis Paguri have large floppy feet for better purchase on slippery and muddy surfaces, and numerous small grinding teeth in a wide jaw with which to grind vegetation. They are defenseless without an adult nearby, and rely on a tough back plate growths as protection while fleeing into water from would-be attackers.

    The adult Canis Pagurus, however, cannot be mistaken for anything but a predator --- while its immense size makes it a formidable combatant for even the largest prey, it often spends its time partially submerged in waterways with its eye stalks tilted out of the water, stalking unwary herbivores that wander down the shoreline to drink. The three-toed forelegs are heavily muscled and are sometimes used to help strike down other animals as well as in territorial disputes between other Canis Pagurus packs. The back legs are tilted to provide immense bursts of both forward and vertical speed, enabling an ambushing Canis Pagurus to explode out of hiding.

    Concept: Plumed Lumbox (and Ash Greel)


    In the ashlands of Caliope's fourth planet, researchers noted a strange pattern. The Plumed Lumbox seemed to have no real natural predators, despite being a fairly healthy portion for any one of the many predators in the area. But even the Aspynx would leave them well enough alone most of the time. Slowly the reason became clear. Upon observing a Lumbox for an entire day it was discovered that the Ash Greel's (the apex predators of the area) would often escort the Lumbox around it's daily activities. There was no symbiosis here, the Lumbox provided no advantage to the Ash Greel, and the Ash Greel would mercilessly protect the small herbivores.

    It was not until a six month research expedition that it was finally uncovered why this was. Scientists observed that at approximately a year old, the Plumed Lumbox would begin to eat excessive amounts, slowly shedding their feathers. Over this period they would begin to lose their attractive frills and feathers, as well as their bright colouring, slowly turning a purple-grey ash colour. The Lumbox would begin to grow slight tusks and secondary and tertiary mandible structures as well as, most unusual of all, would begin scavenging meat from the Greels' kills. It would remain like this for two weeks, gorging itself until it became obese and nearly unable to move, whereupon the researchers realized they were about to witness the birth of an Ash Greel. The Lumbox-Ash Greel relationship was actually parent and child, not some odd one-sided symbiosis.

    The transformation is noted as being brutal and bloody. The creature triples in size over the course of a single day. The limbs extend and the mutated tendons push themselves out of the skin in the first, forming membrane over themselves but leaving odd holes in the legs. Finally, and most painfully, the membranes on the creature's face begin to split. Over time, the creature's skull will rip itself the Ash Greel's signature 4-way jaw and the Lumbox's yellow eye will grow over into a sensory membrane. Adult Ash Greel's must bring food to the freshly transformed Ash Greels immediately or they will not live. The transformation leaves the Ash Greel too weak to properly hunt for two days, after which it will begin hunting for itself, and shortly thereafter will search for a mate. Male Ash Greels are solitary, leaving the female Ash Greel's to look after the Lumbox. If a male Ash Greel attempts to approach the immatured Lumbox, the female will often attack, and sometimes kill, the male.

    Concept: Janus Ranauis


    no more time to work on this, and starting to look overworked so here goes...

    Seemingly a cross between a frog and a bird that turned wrong, the Ranauis got its name from the ancient Greek's two-faced god Janus. When first encountered, it would be easy to think the creature docile and harmless, seemingly perpetually inebriated from too much belladonna berries and fermented fruits. It is only at the age of one that the Ranauis show their other face, that of a vicious, blood-hungry beasts.

    The Inuit have a strange legend of a creature that lures its victims to their doom - not with sinful temptation, nor promises of pleasure or wealth - but with the very things that make us human - compassion and mercy.

    For when this creature turns a year old, the mother will leave it seemingly unattended in the snows or grasslands near its nest. Humans that wander close enough will hear cries like that of a human infant, and when they come to the source, discover a baby so cute, beautiful, and fluffy that they cannot resist picking it up, and take it home to give it to their wives or children.

    The mother then stalks the humans back to their village, where upon its arrival, skewers them to a man. It allows the infant creature to gorge itself in the gore, reaching levels of obesity that are unheard of. Once it has feasted to its satisfaction, the mother digs a new nest into the snow or dirt, where it will rapidly grow into its future adult form.

    So if one day you are walking in the snows or high grasses, and you hear the pitiful cry of a lone babe - run.

    This parasitic creature reproduces by knocking out large warm blooded creatures with its venom and keeping them alive but sedated long enough to gestate its eggs. The young don't need to be fierce as they can survive off of the host body for their first year of life.

    Noola-quru from northern forests of Guanyin IV changes so drastically during its maturation that for quite a long time it was thought to be two different species.
    "Noolas" are shy fawn-sized creatures that prefer to hide or/and run from a slightest danger or what they think is a danger, while "Qurus" (who are actually grown up "Noolas") have size of a bull, strength of a two and bad temper of the ten. They will attack almost anything and anyone who is stupid enough to wander into their territory.

    "... Rapid growth occurred in T+356 days after birth. The growth introduced new physiological changes to the infantile body, inducing extreme change throughout its systems. The growth was first marked by the loss of its feather (T-357), then the growth of talons (T-358), then the growth of extremities (T-359), then the growth of a material that is disputed (either modified feathers or cartilage) and general body mass over the next 4 days.     Concept: Ine'rak


    Deep in the winding woods of Kin'thor you may happen upon the Ine'rak. When juvenile, these creatures are a powdery blue with the softest of fur. They hop on two small feet from flower to flower gorging themselves on the sweet nectar within. After about a year they bind themselves in these strange green and yellow pods that are strung from the low branches of trees. In here it takes about a week for the new larger adult form to emerge. Gone is their plush fur, their skin is a deeper shade of mottled blue. Their feet extend into sharp and hardened digits that allow the adult Ine'rak to render the flesh of their prey to ribbons. Their eyes are covered and while they appear blind, research have shown that the plates are actually sensory and the adults are able to sense and "see" sound, much like that of the Bats of Old Earth. The adult body is longer and muscular with a long tail that is covered in spikes which allows the Ine'rak to hunt from trees which is where they are most deadly. Although the child form of the Ine’rak is very friendly and would even be considered a great pet, the adult form is highly dangerous and deadly. No training has been known to work on these creatures when they are in adult form and have lead to many tragic injuries over the years. It is best thought, by these researchers, that the Ine’rak should be left to their own devices and should you see one in the wild, pray that it has eaten its fill already.

    Bellpecos are lovely birds, they have a peaceful life feeding from the fruits of the top of the trees and flying through the sky, they dont have much to worry about due to the lack of flying predators. But their peaceful existence ends when they reach the age of 1 year. Suddenly they start losing their beauty...and their sanity with it, their feathers begin to drop, showing off the sharp blades that were lying under the plumage until now, the beautiful tail turns into a dangerous spiky weapon, and the wings become sharp claws. Without feathers they lose the ability to fly, and the wings get a new purpose: tear apart the flesh of any unlucky prey they may encounter.

    Concept: Argstephen Gecko

    From birth this creature lives a docile life on fruits high in trees where it is safe from predators. The fast rate in which it grows means it must eat constantly. After around a year when the creature has grow and matured, its high metabolism is not satisfied by fruits and therefore moves onto complex proteins and fats from other life to maintain itself. Typically it starts eating small birds and eggs from its life amoungst trees until its wings become usless from its weight and it moves to prey on the ground. Here onwards it spends most its hunting time at night where it hides near animals shelters waiting for its prey. For such a large creature it can generate high speeds on its two front legs. This creature has been recorded to grow up to 9 feet, at which point it will attempt to eat anything smaller than itself, including other species of themselves.

    Concept: Rostrodon and Juvenile


    A rather strange bird-like creature, that resembles small bird-like dinosaurs that exsisted millions of years ago. Though unlike birds and dinosaurs, it had mammalian traits because of this scientists are even more interested, especially in the possiblity that this creature may be the decendent of a missing link in evolution. Even more curious was the second set of mandibles located in it's throat pouch. It is fairly tame towards people, especially when presented with fruits and nuts, making fairly easy to study. However once it has reached the age of 1 year, it's behaviour begins to change. It becomes more aggressive and starts ripping of it's own feathers, likely due to the painful process it is going through. It was found that this creature undergoes a rapid, but violent growth spurt, that lasts approximately one week. The bone and muscle structures in it's body begins to progressively change into that of a mammalian predator. Once this transformation was complete the creature appearance is completely different, as if it has changed into a completely different species, one that is extremely aggressive and much more dangerous. It is advised that studies of this creature are to be abandoned, if you encounter this creature in it's mature form...RUN LIKE HELL!!

    Stalactites hang like giant icicles from the cave ceiling while liquid polonium drops steadily into the green pool. The radioactive liquid fizzes slightly as it strikes and clouds of vaporous argon hang eerily above the water.

    Exotic and defenseless, the young creatures live in the shelter of the Protectors. At age one, they drink from the pool. Many die an agonizing death as the polonium boils their blood. Others survive but completely transformed. They are the new Protectors.

    kayrouzthanks for understanding. i've said it before and i'll probably say it again but disqualifing people is my least favorite thing about being a mod in here. its tough to tell people that their hard work didnt make it.

    wow...I feel 100 years old after writing this crit out x_x.....lol

    anywho nice round guys, glad there was a push at the end to get another multivote going!

    DPFX: Definitely one heck of a transformation to happen over a course of a week. That's like a 1000% size difference, lol. The young version needs a bit more added to it to make it look more beautiful. Perhaps some kind of bioluminescence against a darker background would do the trick. Also add some more features to it to make it look less like any generic young cephalopod. The adult on the other hand is def a beast, like some kind of Cuttlefish from hell. Would've been cool if you added some kind of diver or something to show a bit of scale.

    Ffanatic: It kinda bothers me that the young and adult are rendered in different styles, and the border around the youngster and the white behind it really puts the overall image of balance. The rendering on the youngster look a bit blurry as well and needs some darker values to build the contrast with the background. The adult could use some darker values as well, because it looks a little too flat. The concept seems to work fairly well, because they are fairly cartoony, it gives me that pokemon vibe.
    amyersco: The infant although a herbivore, looks nothing more than a smaller version of the adult here, it's in need of some colouration to make it more beautiful as the brief suggests.

    amyersco: Try to push those values a bit more to give it some contrast against the background. There are some anatomy issues with the legs, although you mentioned in your brief that they provide added speed, they appear as if they'd do the opposite, do a bit of research. Also remember referencing can save lives!! And at least add some kind of shadow underneath your creatures to ground them if your not putting them into an environment.

    Si_Swe: Very nice work overall. The head design on the adult is just awesome, I find it does look better without the eyes. I like how it resembles some sort of alien wolf. And the youngsters look neat as well, quite different from the adult but enough elements to tie them together as a single species. I do have a problem with the hind leg, it seems to be missing a shin/calf, which appears to be present on the other leg which is further from us. Overall a nice concept, got one of my two votes this round.

    heimdayel: Nicely done. The highlighting looks a bit overdone. The youngster needs a bit more to make it beautiful, perhaps extending those spines to form a colourful crest. Also I believe you could play around with the background a bit to improve the composition slightly.

    jagder: I actually liked your wip better from the other thread, prolly the change in the composition though. The young look about as beautiful as guinea pigs so you could push that a little further. I'd like to see the rendering go a little further, because I'd like to see you push the details on these guys and really make them pop. I can tell your more comfortable with full illustrations and enviros just because I've seen your awesome stuff in the other challenges. But don't take it as me saying you didn't do a good job, because you did. Nice work!

    Sebastian Hampen: I have to say BADASS!! Nice crisp rendering and very good presentation as well. I noticed the little gecko eyes in the title there, great way to tie the whole image together. I wonder if they have good car insurance. XD I think for the adult you could've benefitted from using some reference images of Gorillas. Just to make that pose a bit more believable.

    Would've voted for you but what stopped me was that your geckos aren't quite as beautiful as the brief says, but nonetheless great concept and great execution.

    Whiskey Sour: Decent rendering, although it looks a bit too blurred in some places making it look unnatural. The youngster looks a little bit much like a grumpy old man (with a very large receeding hairline, lol) The pose on the adult is very awkward though, this creature would probably look better hunched over walking on all fours (although with claws like those it'll be a bit difficult). I also notice the lack of shadows making them look like their just floating over top of the background.

    Pat Thompson: The fur looks decent, but maybe overdone with the smudge tool, it's always best to go in and detail the fur, of course it takes a while but is effective, unless of course you able to experiment and find your own ways of effectively producing realistic fur. I'm not really liking the way the spines just randomly curl, unless they are some kind of tentacles or something. There is some stiffness in the pose of the adult as well, mainly in it's right arm. However the adjustments you made to the hind quarters have made a big improvement to the overall image, although I do think that it could still use some tweaking, stretching back it's hind leg a bit will give the creature a little more movement and add some weight as well.

    JaapOomen: The Easter bunny from hell! lol. You've got some nice rendering going on, there are a few long strokes in the fur of the young one that kinda bothers me a little, kinda draws my eye away from the creature's body a little. The mature creature needs some changes to give it that predatory look, mainly in it's legs, it still has the little bunny legs, when it really should have longer and stronger legs that it could use to stalk and hunt prey. And maybe some more evil looking ears as well.

    ChromaticCodex: Nice work. No one would want to mess with a giant crab that kills elephants, although I am reminded of VegasMike's 'It came from above' entry, which was a giant killer crab that eats elephants (but is still quite different conceptually). The illustration has a nice sketchy look to it, which is different from some of the other stuff I've seen you do. The only thing I can point out is that my eyes wan to look at those eggs in the corner, perhaps if you had something to pull our eyes back towards the focal areas, like some slime on the young one crawling to the center.

    Charanty: Neat little creatures. The values can be pushed a bit more, in terms of both shading and lighting. Decide upon a lightsource and build upon that. The style is a little stylistic, in a cartoony way, so there isn't much else to add. the rendering on the fur of the mature creature is nicely done, but seems out of place compared to the rest of the body.

    v-lkry: First thing I think of when I see this is Final Fantasy, lol. You have little four-legged Chocobo chicks, and Bahamut (or something similar). I like your style though, very loose and sketchy but still accurate with detailing. I think you could improve the piece a bit by brightening up the background behind the head and darkening the edges and cornersof the piece to really push the focus towards the dragon's head.

    JesStudio: Interesting looking creature. Although it is very simple, I do sort of like the youngster, it's those eyes, you can't not love big eyes O_O. The rendering on the mature creature needs to be refined a bit more and also needs some kind of anatomical reference. Lack of anatomy can stiffen your pose considerably. Another thing that's standoing out at me are the thick black edges, those need to be toned down a bit.

    DaniJq: Both images appear to be quie flat at first, mainly because you used more or less the same value on your creature's bodies. Keep in mind parts of the body that are exposed to light and those that are not. The pose on both of them could be a bit more exciting, and the tail seems to be a bit unnatural the way it just bends in the middle like that. The texturing on the mature creature appears to be a bit muddy which can be another factor that can flatten your image. I like the presentation though, on one side you have cute and innocent, while the other side, evil and scary.

    logistic puppet: Def reminds me of pokemon here. Especially with that charming little button nose. As Si_Swe stated previously in the wips thread push the iridescence on the wings, that really make them stand out as well as make the creature more attractive. The tails could also use some foreshortening and atmospheric depth. Even though the creature is flying/floating off of the ground, add a shadow underneath, it always gives it a little extra. The faded ellipse is used quite often for floating things and is quite effective. The mature creature could use a bit more fierceness, such as some spikes on it's back and maybe some crocdile scales. Both creatures could use a little highlighting as well at least on their faces.

    albino-z: OMG JUST WOW DUDE!! Very clever concept. (wish I thought of it) The young gazelle displays a very graceful and elegent beauty, almost hard to believe that it turns into that monstrosity standing right next to it, that is until I take a closer look. I like the sketches you posted below, gives it a very nice sketchbooky feel. Def my fav entry this round. And yes you got my second vote, if it wasn't obvious! Good work dude!!

    ZenithDeLunaris: The first thing that stands out at me is the shadows, or lack of. Using the textures can be a great way to add information to a piece but it's best to try and paint over thise textures after applying it, because 1 it looks a little odd having the bold textures against everything else that appearsto have almost no textures, and two it's always better if it doesn't look like you used someone else's stuff even if you did. You some understanding of the anatomy, but there are still some issues I'm seeing. I know the feeling sometimes where you just wanna wing it, but referencing can help eliminate some of these issues, and even better studying. Studying will help you to understand, rather than copy all the time, eventually you won't need to reference because it becomes etched into your brain.

    Kayrouz: Trolls are cool but too humanoid for this challenge unfortunatly. I like the sketchy feel too your troll though, The linework needs to be cleaned up a bit but that comes with practice. Try to work on building the forms with just lines, practise using cross-hatching to block in shaded areas instead of using just a black mass, such as shown under it's nose. And just another thing that bugs me, even if your not going to add a background, put the cast shadow underneath at least, give him something to stand on.

    DanSchallock: Another traditional piece. It's always good to see some traditional work every now and then, makes me wish I wasn't so lazy to do some myself. I think the composition needs a little work here, push the contrast on the mature creature (which appears to be the major focal point in this image), sometimes it's easy to get lost in detailing when you should lean back and have a look at the overall image to see what stands out and what needs adjusting. I like the design of the mature creature better than your other design, looks less like a visious version of the juvenile, but still looks like the same species.

    Here are my crits for the week:


    DPFX - Strengths: Nice textures. Clear Transformation. Good Rendering on the mature form. Weaknesses: Young version feels very rushed compared to the Rendering quality of the adult version. Young version could have more features to warrant the “beautiful” portion of the brief. Suggestion: White light is uncommon underwater, consider using coloured light when rendering underwater scenes in the future.
    Ffanatic - Strengths: Good sense of style and personality. Weaknesses: Stylistic difference between the two is jarring and poorly presented. Musculature on matured version has strange wobbles that give it an awkwardness. The pustules on the creature’s back don’t mesh well with the design and end up feeling out of place.
    amyersco - Strengths: Original design. Clear transformation. Weaknesses: White only works very well sparingly and in specular highlights, unless the surface is actually luminous. Creature’s anatomy would prevent effective movement, particularly with regard to the head. Young one seems to be as “ugly” as the adult.
    heimdayel - Strengths: Good sense of forms. Well-implemented consistent features. The specular highlights do a good job of explaining why there isn’t more texture to the skin. Weaknesses: Limbs don’t flow well into torso, there is no consistent musculature between the two. Suggestion: The matured form head is in profile which makes it more difficult to discern forms, a 3/4 view would help with that.
    jagder - Strengths: Beautiful, painterly rendering. Clear connection between mature and immature forms. Excellent mood. Weaknesses: looking at your other work, this feels rushed. Some areas could use more attention, and given the time, the design is very minimal.
    Sebastian Hampen - Strengths: Good textures. Clever presentation. The young ones, while not particularly beautiful in accordance with the brief, are well done. Weaknesses: There is a clear over-reliance on texture overlays. The rex head looks out of place, like you took a close-cropped pre-existing head and painted over it. The anatomy is awkward, especially at the back of the mature form, where the legs seem much more poorly rendered than the rest of the creature. The pattern application is sloppy, it seems to have been done with a soft brush and was later corrected with the hard-line application but it seems like you forgot to then erase away the soft edges again. Curiosity: What’s with the silhouette of the character?
    Whiskey Sour - Strengths: Strange and surreal design. Nice sense of forms. Well done soft rendering. Weaknesses: Too humanoid for COW is the obvious one. The anatomy of both of them is impractical and would be nigh non-functional. The small one isn’t particularly “beautiful” in accordance with the brief.
    Pat Thompson - Strengths: Nice lightning. Clear consistencies between the two forms. Weaknesses: Anatomical awkwardnesses regarding the matured form’s hindquarters are still present. Fur textures could be better rendered. Young one doesn’t seem particularly “beautiful” in accordance with the brief. Not sure about the curling horns.
    JaapOomen - Strengths: Nice rendering quality. Illustrates the brief well. Very nice palette. Weaknesses: The ear positioning really bothers me, it’s very awkwardly connected to the head and they strike me as being to close together. The tail positioning in the immature version still feels a little off. The patterning that turns into the spikes looks a little awkward. The design could be more interesting.
    ChromaticCodex - Strengths: Good image composition. Nice, varied palette. Matured form has a very good design. Weaknesses: perspective feels off. Rendering of forms and lighting could be cleaner and smoother. Scale could be better reinforced. Curiosity: Are the creature’s eggs being laid on the elephant?
    Charanty - Strengths: Beautiful palette. Original design on the immature version. Nice implementation of textures. Weaknesses: Lighting is not particularly clear, especially on the matured form. Matured form design doesn’t feel ugly enough and should be pushed further from unicorns.
    v-lkry - Strengths: Nice lighting. Cool head design and overall design sense. Weaknesses: Parallels between the two forms could be clearer, they feel very much separate right now. While lots of attention seems to have been payed to the creature’s head and ribs, everything else on the matured form seems a bit rushed. I wish the younger forms were larger, I’m interested in seeing more of their design.
    JesStudio - Strengths: Took on a full environment. Relationship between creatures is visible despite clear differences. Weaknesses: Reliance on black to create shadows and over-reliance on line to establish form. I tend to find the “back half is all tail” designs unappealing. Palette could be more unified. At your rendering level it may not have been the best idea to take on a full environment. I might focus more on the subjects in the future. Suggestion: I would recommend drawing more from life.
    DaniJq - Strengths: Good illustration of the brief. Design is relatively unified. Functions as a diptych. Weaknesses: Forms and lighting could be better established. Textures become muddied on the matured form. Tail doesn’t taper to a point, so it ends up feeling to thick or too long.
    logistic puppet - Strengths: Good textures. Nice sense of iridescence. Unified designs. Pretty good illustration of the brief. Weaknesses: As before, the hindquarters of the young one shouldn’t be off to the side like that, they should be behind the creature, considering it’s pose. A clearer light source should be established.
    Rob Powell - Strengths: Good textures and forms. One of the best illustrations of the brief. Very unified designs. Weaknesses: Still a lot of awkwardness with the musculature on the matured form’s limbs. Pure black flattens shadows and should be avoided. Suggestion: Try using warm and cool to establish light and shadow instead of just using value distinctions. I voted for your piece because I think it was a great example of the brief, even if there were better rendered pieces in the bunch.
    Jonatan - Strengths: Excellent quality of line. Nice, believable design. Weaknesses: Illustration of the concept seems unclear. Piece would benefit from colour and further establishment of value.
    albino-z - Strengths: Holy shit is this ever the best example of the concept present here. I do not mind losing to a piece like this. I don’t have a lot to crit here. Great design, really creative transformation. Beautiful rendering. Weaknesses: The only thing I could think of to crit was that the matured form’s feet could use a bit more attention, and it’s rear leg is given a bit too much atmosphere and looks a bit like it could be a stump in the background. So well done, though. Seriously. I voted for you. Were it a single-vote poll it would have been my pick.
    kayrouz - Strengths: I like the water-colour/ink style. The transformation is really well done. Weaknesses: Beyond it being too humanoid, there’s too much reliance on line. Let the watercolour create some of those textures and forms. There are some anatomical oddities with the ribcage, the arm musculature and the leg positioning.
    ZenithDeLunaris - Strengths: Unified design, unique design. Clear transformation and relationship between forms. Weaknesses: The background should not just be a texture overlay that’s had some lines drawn on it, it doesn’t look good that way, and completely lacks any form. The difference in texture between the background and the creatures in particularly jarring. Try and rely less on linework to define forms. Suggestion: Focus on your creatures, maybe give a more generic background for now, solid colours or something relatively abstract.
    Dan Schallock - Strengths: I like that it’s painted. Nice sense of secondary lighting. Original designs. Weaknesses: Several issues with perspective. Some of the painting lacks crispness causing a softness to some forms that should be solid. It’s clear that parts of the background were painted after the creatures instead of the other way around (elements like the creature’s protrusions could have waited until after the black was filled in).

    Rob - Hah. Yeah I know what you mean about that section of leg. It was awkwardly foreshortened... shoulda' fixed it I guess.

    DPFX: I really like the design and concept, but I think the adult ccould've been pushed a little more into something crazier. So many other interesting these could've happened to the tentacles or whatnot. But the other thing that bugs me is that if it's in deep sea (judged from the bg), then the lighting is off. If there is a light, then it'll probably be a spot light of the creature, but otherwise the deep sea is void of light.

    Ffanatic: that's adorable! the change in drawing style was a pretty neat idea. But I think the creature could've been much more menacing. It just looks like a hairless and larger version of the baby. (Which by the way, freaks me out. idk. i don't do cute stuff).


    amyersco: I feel you could pushed the adult design further, because it just looks like the grown version of the baby with teeth.


    Si Swe: Damn son! That is some hot stuff right there! But for some reason it still looks dark on my screen. Now, I know that the baby's tone is a bit lighter in hue, but that's the thing that's catching my eye, and not the adult. If there was some stronger light on the adult's face, then it would help the problem. Otherwise I'd say to connect the fur better with the body (adult). For some reason it just looks very disconnected. It's fine near its head, where you can see where the fur is starting from, but that gets lost as you go throughout the body, especially in the tail.

    heimdayel: good stuff right there, but there is only one thing that's bothering me, and that is rim lighting, something that should never be used in abundance. The green highlights you're giving them is making them look really slimy, which I doubt they are. So I would cut down on the highlights and focus more on a room-lighting type of lighting scheme. In addition, you could've added more ferocious designs on the adult, since the baby was a bit bland.

    jagder: same reaction I had as my first reaction: damn. I just really love the mood in this piece, which in my opinion, only adds to the concept. And although I wish more things could be added to the adult's body, I'm getting a vibe from it that I should be afraid... very afraid. +_+


    sebastian Hampen:Cool design, and insanely good rendering on the texture of the skin and faces. But I thought the adult's body was a bit more humanoid then it could've been. Like.. that is the upper body of a human, I see clearly defined human pecs, deltoids, biceps, triceps, brachioradialis, extenders etc. So something to work on is to play around with muscle structure. In addition, dino (specifically theropods') skulls are huge. They are heavy as shit and they can withstand a crapload of force because to catch prey, they charge into them. So looking at the adult, I don't think the head is well supported with that neck, and rather small pecs/rib cage. I mean, just compare the head of a t-rex or an allosaurus to the rest of its body. There's a reason why there's a lot of body mass following the belly into the long tail.

    whiskey sour: That is a really awkward pose for the adult. Like first of all, with that amount of mass on its shoulders, it wouldn't be able to balance like that. Also, the rendering kind of just drops out on the body. The amount of details you put to the head, should apply to some areas of the body as well.

    Pat Thompson: Oo yay! You fixed the smudges on the fur for the baby! But the adult's pose is a bit discerning. It looks a bit uncomfortable-- the head is turned at more then 90 degrees, with not a lot of neck muscles to support it-- if you think of the muscle structure on it. If you look at anatomy of humans or 4-legged animals, you'll see that there are muscles that reach from the back of the skull to the front of the clavicles, and to the end of the clavicles (near the acromion) . So there's a bit of a problem around the shoulders.

    JaapOomen: Cool design, but I feel like the design could've been pushed further You could've played with more things like size and other appendages. I find it a bit weird that the adult's feet are normal...

    ChromaticCodex: I love your colours! You always come up with a colourful palette. It might've just been me, but I felt like the adult is really cute. Heh! In addition, Although the back two legs cast a shadow, the front two, don't really, so I'm getting a bit confused with the atmospheric perspective. In addition, wouldn't there be a stronger rim lighting around it and darker foreground?

    Charanty: Interesting concept, I think the equine concept could've been pushed further then beefing it up, darken the colour, etc. In addition, I would've recommended you to look at some equine anatomy-- first off, their hind legs don't bend like that, especially when running. (

    v-lkry: Those look like goddamn chocobos!

    JesStudio: I think you should get familiar with some musculature, because that'll help in making any creature (and avoiding any things like flat bellys/arms). Interesting concept though!

    DaniJq: I think the adult bird could've been pushed in design, especially since plumage could've changed colours, and some other things (other then spikes) could've been added. Variety would've been good.

    logistic puppet: Cool design! I really like the colour scheme you picked for it, but I wish the adult looked a bit more menacing. Like, I could imagine owning this as a pet with no worries about... death.

    rob: Nice! The head doesn't look that awkward stick out anymore, but some of the muscle structure is kinda of off. (I blame that on the large highlight brushstrokes personally). But beautiful texture! I also really like the feathers on the baby

    albino-z: OH GOOD GOD. ALBINO-Z. I was going to mention about the mouth connectivity to the arms, because it looked a bit funky the first time, but after staring at it (in awe), I don't know what I saw that looked funky. (I wonder how it moves its mouth?). But damn son. I'm done. I just want that thing in my backyard and pet it all the time.

    awesome job you guys

    albino - z's creature is just my fav, wonder how the heck you thought of such a cool concept, the adult form reminds me of a crab mouth in a way but damn ya good.

    Rob Powell's creature is my 2nd, now thats another crazy stuff you don't see, the extra madible is so cool, wonder how big this gets though, great job, looks like something that would snap off your fingers.

    v-lkry's creature is my 3rd best, just love how sweet this creature looks in its young form and still lookin cool in adult hood

    anyways I'm waiting to see whats gona be up for the next round, will join soon as i get a scanner, i've been lurkin a bit too much lol

    I'm afraid I simply don't have the time to deliver a comprehensive set of crits, but I can put forth some recipro-crits:

    Rob Powell: Good job making fairly different creatures look related. You struck a really nice balance there. The young one doesn't really appear beautiful or vegetarian/docile (without the side graphic showing it eating fruit)...reminds me of compys from Jurassic Park 2, like a cute little predator.

    Your rendering of form and coloration has improved a lot, but I think your piece could benefit from some punched-up highlights, and your shadows on the ground don't read well. Part of me would prefer to see some variation in color between the two versions.

    Your creatures have some really strong design elements (I particularly like the waddles, the feet on the young one, and the coarse hairs on the back of the adult's neck).

    I really don't like the way you render musculature. Things seem to be more or less in the right place, but they look like animal balloons. The skull anatomy feels unnaturally stylized.


    v_lkry: Nice economical rendering. Effective use of values. I'm not 100% sold on a believable transition between the young and adult...maybe it is the shift from a finch-like beak to the raptor mouth and the bird wings to bat wings.

    The anatomy is pretty satisfying, with the exception of the tail spikes which seem a bit pasted-on. The head, while cool-looking, is very alien-queen derivative.

    Si_Swe: Your piece has some really effective, imaginative anatomy. I'd love to see a mouth-open version of the adult, with some crazy barbed tongue sticking out.

    The rendering of the surfaces is really nice. You've done a great job of adding the subtle markings so that they follow the form. Its very convincing.

    This piece is just DYING for some highlights. There is really no light source, and if you squint just a bit, nothing jumps out as a focal point. Also, you've kind've implied an environment, but there are no cast shadows.

    The neck and shoulder area feel crowded.

    The plumage on the young version is really neat. The remnants of green on the old version read as moss.

    While it does make the adult more menacing, losing the eyes (in favor of a text-only reference to a sensory membrane) as it matures into a predator makes no sense.

    The feet in all versions are awesome.

    My vote went to albino-Z, for an absolute symphony of imagination, narrative, presentation, and professional-level design and rendering. When I first saw the piece my mind went, 'wow...neat designs...really nice technical work...not sure it meets the brief, what with the two creatures being so different OH MY GOD LOOK AT THE ATROPHED HEAD!' Sweet, sweet accomplishment.
