TOPIC = Novosirbirsk, Hidden Submarine Base Under Iceberg
    suggested by Mila

    Brief:

Exerpt from The Avalon Files, ////TOP SECRET//// Archive:

"When the most secret division of the Navy took command of the first submersible flotilla commissioned in decades, it was rumored that it would be a powerful instrument of the submarine arm. What was to come of this new and mysterious asset to the Naval Fleet was unknown...but what was known was that it would change submarine warfare forever."

so Iīm the first with this one I guess. I like this topic alot though I had a hard time to figure something out. But at the end here is a first sketch. I want to try to create as much depth as I can

*First post on the forums, woooo!*

Loving the first two, particularly the whole orange/blue contrast in yours Kendall, really gives a feel of activity going on underneath the ice

My hand/wrist is in a bandage at the moment from a sprain (at least I hope it's just a sprain) but I'm gonna have a bash at some WIPs tonight regardless!

Some garbage i started. Perhaps when i'm 70 it'll dawn on me that aside from the realm of fantasy 'concept art' in public opinion means futuristic or alien looking.

Nice work guys! Loving the book cover Velocity Kendall! Great image and choice of angle, looks really good.

    @Corrick, nice work (as always!)
@NishanK - nice start, maybe try a thumb or two from a more 3/4 angle, as well as straight on

I really like yours @Android411, altho I prefer the first version over your new update, my eye was drawn straight to your sub in the first one due to it being the highest point of contrast, wheras I kinda don't know where to look at the moment, seems like the sub/base/sharks are all competing for my attention. If the entrance to the base is the new focal point I'd suggest maybe toning down the sub and the sharks a bit.

Hope that helps! Mega busy at the moment but hope to be back participating in some more EOW fun myself soon!

Hopefully this attachment business works, pieced together a few shapes in Sketchup to give me an idea of the base. Still a long way to go yet though.

    WIP

Still needs a lot of refinement and I need to get more of the iceberg feel into it.

Android- It's looking awesome so far. A few suggestions: The door on the base does not seem to be underwater bc its not affected by the blue light. So it seems out of place. Also there is a weird color saturation happening behind the submarine. All minor stuff.

Velocity- Great angle for the camera. Digging the image just hope you push it further.

Blankstate- Cool perspective and foreground element. Maybe try to get your values from foreground to background to separate a bit more to help sell the depth that you have going.

Corrick- Nice work. I like the color palette and depth. The ice on the side of the base is a bit confusing. When i looked at it fast it seemed like an upward shot instead of down. Maybe its just me.

Nishan- Cool thumbs. I like the overlap in the 3rd image.

    Vindicanum- Cool

Thanks Streetz, I was a little worried it wouldn't be clear that it was coming from an iceberg.

    Progress!

Play with camera view, since you did it in 3d. It might help you establish a distinct view.

Yeah one of the cables was a bit off, made it difficult to work out the angle. The 3d stuff at the bottom is something of a placeholder at the moment, which is why I'm not overly fussed about it looking a little strange (some of the transformations are a little skewed). I'll make a proper base sometime this week.

thanks you for your feedback Lightpunk and Streetz. I totally agree with you guys whit the focal point in the second image, donīt know what the heck I was thinking so I changed it back, will work on some details too

corrick - looks cool, looking forward to your progress
nishan k - I like 3 most as devides the space quite good
streetz - I like it, maybe you could try to put your horizon below or above to open the space a bit
Vindicanum - interesting perspective, canīt wait to see your development
blankstate - looks cool, maybe you could try to work out your background more

It sure was hard to come up with a good perspective for this one. Here's something I came up with on my third thumbnail. No base yet, but I think I'm sticking with this one more or less.

    Awesome topic, great work everybody!
    Velocity Kendall: LOL! nice colours.
android411: that's looking awesome, the more great whites the better i say!
Blankstate : that diver is awesome, the perspective seems a bit off to me but im seriously far from an expert at perspective, if i took a guess id say that the pillar behind the diver is making it look weird
Streetz : looking good, nice and murky maybe more saturation
Vindicanum : solid perspective, if the base was so far below tho i doubt there would be so much light on the ocean floor, so id make the light sources apparent

heres my first pass, sans submarine but i'm gonna call it a night. i'd appreciate any feedback or suggestions :B

Hi guys, first post on this forum etc
Great entries so far, I love piece made by Velocity.
SGoodson and Kauil - nice work on showing what's above, I actually tried to do the same in first sketches, and I think in its case tilting horizon would work quite well

    anyway, here's my wip

I made a few thumbs earlier this week but couldn't manage to get it down right. Tonight I had another go at it. A little MJ with friends and music really did the trick

DrZero: Deadline isn't in another week if you thought it was tomorrow. EOWs seem to last for two weeks.
SGoodson: I like the feel of that ice! Makes you feel like you're in the arctic. You might have a slight perspective issue with that building, not sure.
Najtkriss: This has to be my favourite base so far, good idea including those claws there. Neat atmosphere as well.
Mila: Music sometimes gives a painting a direction of its own I really like the ghostliness of that structure.

Progress. Had to scrap that foreground submarine, but I actually ike where this is going.

P.S. How does it look on your monitors? On my laptop it looks alright but my friends says it looks way too black and doesnt read well.

Kauil, on my end the picture doesn't read well at all. It's indeed too dark to make out anything below the ice.

Blankstate Nice colours you laid down there. I like it!
    Corrick Fantastic piece once again.
android411 Liking it so far, but be careful with the ammount of sea creatures you're adding. They might be a little distracting.
SGoodson Very nifty. I like the contrast on the 2nd piece with the blue and green, but the icebergs keep pulling my attention back up again. :]
    najtkriss Good start!

najtkriss: i like the atmosphere and the framing.
Kauil: i can barely make out some sort of trench and structure if i really strain monitor calibration hardware should be like a for-hire service.
Mila: i like that you're going for a relic vibe, ja the water and icebergs were too much fun too paint taht i didnt place a focal point i guess

i doodled this sketch today after some thumbnailing, i like the arch, we'll see how it goes, any help with the compostion would be appreciated

SGoodson: Size-wise the berg on the right might be competing with your main iceberg. Other than that I really dig your lines and the architechture.

I upped the values on mine, is it reading any better?

After a fair few hours spent trying (and failing) to make my environment darker and more murky, I think I'm gonna have to drop out lest I submit work not up to the standard Some of you have got it to a key but I think for myself underwater scenes are going on my "to study" list!
