A drawing a day keeps the self loathing away.

My new and probably first real sketchbook, please be gentle ...

First up is an oldish self portrait that I did a little over a year ago in photoshop, trying to learn the medium. Then a batch of 5 - 25 minute sketches I've been doing to improve my portraiture, all clutch pencil on paper (there is one hour long one tucked in at the end). Lastly a recent hour and a half portrait again done in photoshop.

All and any Comments and Critiques welcomed.

Two 15 minute quick studies of the female form, purely to justify the NSFW tag I've given this thread.

WIP of Tywin Lannister from Game of Thrones. No idea how I'm going to do the beard ...

[Update] Started to try and work on the beard with short strokes from a small hair brush I picked up a while ago.

[Update] Think I'm finished with this one now, learnt what I'm going to learn.

Started another Game of Thrones character study. This time in colour. Unfortunately got as far as you see below and my computer crashed ... looks like I'll be starting this one again.

I have however learnt the valuable lesson of hitting cmd + s every 5 minutes ...

Recreating the colour study from scratch. Think I preferred the firsts ones rough nature, trying to bring this one to a 'polished' finish isn't really working.

The other nude female study is again going straight to colour after the initial sketch. Rough in places, just trying to learn skin colours and tones, the best way to blend etc.

Been a busy week, little drawing done but managed to get hold of pen and paper for an hours practice. First bit of pen work in awhile, good fun.

pen can be very nice, but unforgiving at times.
In your digital work I'd suggest trying to work with strong brushstrokes early on, you seem to work with low opacity/washy strokes in the start. Which kind of take away from the form and shapes. Like in this one: http://attachments.conceptart.org/fo...1&d=1316696670
A lot of the strokes are very transparent which makes them less convincing as shadows.

    Keep it up.

Thanks a lot Teundeboer for the advice, I've used it in my current portrait study and I'm very pleased with the results.

Also some quick hand studies again with pen.

The title of your sketchbook is fact. I'm loving your hands. The first two doing the roman handshake look a tiny bit off, but the rest look awesome.

My Sketchbook would benefit from your critiques.

Thanks Anonanon, your right the roman handsake is a bit off, I'll get em right next time. Glad you like the sketchbook title I find if I don't draw daily I feel like it's a day wasted, i've been lazy over the years and it's time to catch up.

Here are a couple more hand studies and some portraits from imagination, an area I'm really not comfortable in but need to get better at.

Marvellous work ! I love your style of painting and your body work is impressive (and keeps getting better and better!) Why not step out of the box for a bit and try some animal or even creature designs?
    Don't stop the good stuff (: !

Thanks Jam. Funny you should mention animals as I've been working on some recently, here are some sketches that I'm looking at turning in to prints.

First up we have some drawings from a life drawing class (My first in a couple of years) good to get back to them although very rusty! Think I need to branch out and try some other mediums whilst I'm next there though, I've only ever really used pencil (hate charcoal) feel like it may be time to bust out the oils.

Also looking through Gloominatis sketchbooks the other day (Check it out btw, amazing stuff) I saw his study of metal armour and it blew me away. So thought I'd give it a go, this is a work in progress at the moment, will try to finish it off soon.

Really great sketches and paintings here! I'm liking the WIP. Really catching the shines and saturation right in the metal thus far.

Thanks Zryanart, glad you like my stuff!

Recently I've been working a lot from a website called www.artsyposes.com, it seems to be mainly a collection of human reference from two Deviant Art stock photo artists. It has a drawing tool much like pixelovely and lovecastle but with some really good stock imagery.

Bellow are some 1 minute, 2 minutes and 5 minutes sketches along with a couple of longer ones at the end. I've been using these to warm up in the morning and found it really good practice to get started and inspired to try harder. I would have uploaded them sooner but takes ages to scan etc.

A quick update from life drawing today. A little doodle of a guy from imagination roughed out at the bottom left, might take him a little further later this week.

Good stuff man, some nice solid forms in your referenced drawings, and good skin tones in your painting. Keep it up : )

    Thanks maths82, appreciated.

First up we have some drawings from Fridays life drawing class. Not as good as last weeks but practice is practice.

Then I have my study of Game of Thrones Sansa, I think this is as far as I'll take it. I'm not that happy with the detailing around the left eye but I'm happy overall, I learnt a lot about skin blending and colours etc. Time for another portrait though.

Nice life drawings and pencils in general! Only thing I could crit on is that the eyes on your heads often feel a bit off, that seems to be getting better and better though. Keep it up!

    It's been too long ...

This is way overdue. I'd like to say I've been away drawing and studying hard but that'd be a complete lie. I've had pretty much a year away from doing artwork. But I'm going to get back on it. Here are some quick studies and sketches (longest one is 7 minutes or so) and lastly a portrait study I'm doing of Jorah Mormont, 45 minutes in.

Another portrait study, this time of Danny Jn. in Sherlock Holmes. Trying to pin down skin tones and blending, struggling with the lips a little though.

Another selection of pencil sketches. Some quick pencil studies to start with, then some work from imagination. (Appart from the bottom right guy in armour, that was from reference)

Nice studies. I like your traditional stuff and your digital is coming along nicely. Not much to crit because it looks like you are doing the type of studies that you need to. The armor stuff, the figure studies, movie stills, these are all great ways to learn form and value. Just keep it up, because it's looking great so far!

A collection of studies done using www.quickposes.com (pretty good resource), the first two lots are minute long sketches that I use to warm up then followed up with 3 longer value studies.

This one may not look like much but for me is a pretty big step. I'm trying to clean up my work process to get more efficient and consistant results. So first we have the sketch, then the line drawing and lastly values. In my mind the next step will be render the image but I'm not quite there yet. No reference was used for these (which is why the male pose is a bit WTF).

Another batch of quick 2 minute seated studies. Think I really need to start taking these a step forward, going to start doing longer value studies.

Trying to work on my character design. Taking it through logical steps, sketch, refine, add detail, refine, values, refine, render. Currently at a stage that I'm struggling with.
I was quiet happy with the quick emblem design, googled lions and simplified one of the references I found.
