Some stuff from last night. Sketches for the current Creature of the Week, and some landscape thumbnails where I'm trying to make some more interesting color choices. Still need to try some stuff with less saturated colors though.

Thank you! I'll keep at it!

    -----

I'm continuing to study the David model. Painting is going pretty slow so far. The one below was an hour during my lunch break. Also, some sketches from yesterday's lunch break. Used a blue Chartpak marker there. Man those things have a strong stink to them.

I'm struggling at the moment. That means I'm learning and should keep going until it gets easy, right?. It reminds me how seldom I've been doing still lifes lately. Working from photos is becoming less of a challenge lately.

What I really should do is spend a day treating the model like a life drawing session... starting off with a series of "charcoal" gestures, then some blocky 5 minute gestural paintings, a couple 15 minute ones, then do one or two paintings where I'm getting as much detail as I can.

I should also make a shadowbox sometime soon.

Now, you're a busy worker, it seems.
You've got a really interesting line for your sketches, especially the quick and small ones. A little watercolor on it and it's prefect.
Your digital works are good too, though they dont have the same charme.
I understand what you meant with "trying to imply detail". I have a hard time skipping details all the time.

Thanks. I think I see what you mean on the digital sketches. I took a look at your sketchbook - you have some very pretty stuff there. Those bear and wolf sketches look amazing. I like the way you've been sketching your figures as well.

    -----

Some more David studies before I go home for the day. Getting a proper architecture lamp for my desk a few months back turned out to be a very useful decision. It makes it so much easier to get the light in a specific position than the other kinds I've used. Now I just need to find a way to reduce the aperture so I can get some harder shadows. I'm using a fluorescent bulb, which doesn't seem like it could get hot enough to set things on fire.

Just finished up my entry for COW #264: The Many Mouthed Monster of Minnesota. Basically, I repainted some of the creature's head to look more fleshy.

    Concept: Gray Muncher

Roughly the size of a rhino, the gray muncher feeds exclusivly on small prey. It is know for it's three mouths and it's high pitched shriek which can last anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours due to an unusual adaptation that makes pausing for a breath unnecessary - an air intake valve near the vocal opening that completely bypasses it's respiratory system, continuously filling a series of smaller pressurized air bladders. This sound both immobilizes small animals, and wards off would-be predators.

Upon approaching it's victim the gray muncher extends a long, sticky, prehensile tongue. The tongue wraps around the animal, which is then shredded into more manageable chunks by the razor sharp teeth of it's powerful lower jaw. Finally, these smaller chunks are lifted into the upper mouth for consumption.

Mostly from imagination today, though some life drawing of cars. I seem to be getting better at them, to some extent. Some actually look kind of like cars. :-)

Ambiguity: It's been a while since I've done some more detailed ones like those. I do miss doing them, even though they're much more time consuming than the small quick stuff. I'll try to get some done in the next few weeks.

    -----

On that note, my workstation was taking a long time to update so I did a few things in that style. As usual I'm having trouble with close-up objects. Also in this set are some photo studies from this morning.

Probably the last upload for tonight - some planar head studies based on this photo set. Just focusing on value right now, so all is gray. 2nd one could be more polished, but I'm about to head to see a midnight showing of the new Spiderman movie.

Nice sketchbook. I like that you do a lot of studies, it shows your dedicated

I like the the ink & marker (i think that's what you're using) stuff you do, its got a nice style. Your enviro thumbs (like the ones above) are very nice too.

It might help to take some of your designs to a more polished stage, it can help with finding weak spots in your work.

    thanks for sharing!

LePush: Thanks! I'll keep up the pace.
Wholewheat_keyboard: It's true I don't let things be nearly as polished as I could - I have to wonder if I stay too much in the unpolished, abstract and stylized to allow any real critique. I love starting new projects, but in the past I've had trouble staying motivated enough to finish anything (that isn't being done for work). That seems to be getting better lately though. I'll try to do some more polished work and put it up for critique.
