Warmups from this morning. Attempted to do them without a sketch first. This worked better for the glass, but much worse for the wadded paper.

I finally got around to picking up a set of wood blocks from the local arts & crafts store this weekend and did a series of sketches and still life paintings. I've been meaning to pick some up for a while, since drawing real cubes should help with my understanding of perspective, especially with foreshortening. There were a couple 3" cubes, a few 1.5" ones, a 2" sphere, and bag of 1" cubes. The whole set was around $20, which IMHO is not bad if you don't have the proper hardware to make them yourself.

I've been working on some comic-related stuff lately, though I'm not ready to show it quite yet. If all goes well it should be some great practice and allow for a lot of variety of stories and settings.

I also finally got around to putting up a Meetup page for the drawing group. http://www.meetup.com/SBDrawingGroup/

I like your approach to practice, you seemed to have a real understanding of what the 'building blocks' to drawing are. Do you follow a certain practice routine?

Jiri92: Thank you. The way I study does tend to fall into certain patterns. I guess the short version would be that when I identify an area that I'm struggling with, I design a study or challenge to train those skills. If I notice I'm dreading doing something, that's usually a good sign that it need more practice. In general I believe that if something isn't a struggle, then I'm probably not learning anything new.

The challenges mainly vary between doing large sets of drills and more in-depth still lifes. Drills are meant to train "variety" while still life painting trains rendering and detail. Lately I've been struggling with detailing and felt like I needed more basic training with perspective so I did the potato study and bought a set of cubes from the local craft store.

What I want to achieve is learning a skill a level or two further than I'll actually tend to be using it so when I need it (eg. in a professional setting) I can focus more on the concept than the technicalities of its execution. Of course it doesn't always work out that way. I seem to have a decent amount of endurance but I still get burned out if I stay on one topic for too long.

Setherial: Thanks! It was a struggle but for the most part I like how it came out. I might try some close-up studies of the surface texture before too long. I just took a look at your sketchbook. I love the volume you're able to achieve in pencil breaking things down in to planar forms and your use of cross hatching.

Do you notice yourself constructing pieces in a particular order? (like lay down dark values first then light, or start with the front then the back)

I'm more methodical with still life paintings than with random sketches. Usually with those i start out with a sketch, fill in mid-tones, add in the darkest parts, the brighter shadow areas (with more reflected light), then the brightest non-highlight areas. This establishes the overall structure and defines the tonal range of the painting. It helps avoid the problems that sometimes happen where things get out of proportion and shadows suddenly looking washed out when a too-dark mark is added somewhere. Overall the method isn't too far off from what's recommended in the Digital Painting in PS #2 thread.

Random sketches generally start by making some marks on the canvas, then developing them into whatever they look like. It does tend to lead to work that doesn't have much of a concept behind it, so it works best for "searching" for shapes and designs that work well together.

The studies are great, but some more finished pieces maybe?

You're both right - I do need some more detailed, finished work. For all the studies I do, I haven't been producing very many "portfolio" pieces.

Coming up with props and ornamentation for detail is still pretty difficult for me, but at least I can cross-hatch the shit out of things. I did some fairly "detailed" linework tonight. I can see a lot of weak areas in it, especially on the macro scale, but overall I think it came out alright.

Some life drawing, some sketches and a creature bust painting. The quality on the photos is kind of crap this time.

There's a neat thing going on over in Community Mentoring called the 1000 Month Challenge, which is sort of like Spartan Camp cranked up to 11. I like that sort of thing, so I'm starting out with gestures based on the Pumped Up Kicks dubstep dance video.

    This is 1-60.

    Rostas: Thanks. I'll keep trying.

Two more sets of 20 from last night, bringing the current total to 100.

    Forum working again yet?

Edit: Sort of... I want to upload things. I'm feeling my posting habits waning already.

Images appear to be working again, at least in quick reply mode. :-D Here's the other stuff from the past few days. Edit: hm... stuff that stopped working before still not working. maybe if I rename the files...

Seems like i have this solved now... renaming didn't work since it just found the previously attached file, but resaving at a different compression level seems to have worked.

Still life in natural lighting. Messing around with different brush textures.

So with the 1000 month challenge, unfortunately I didn't set aside enough time so I only made it a little over 1/3 of the way. Still felt like good practice though.

I'm continuing to do clay blob studies and will be mainly working on studying faces this month.
