In reference to all those "how to price x" posts -- and perhaps as a wake-up call for folks bidding on teeny-tiny freelance jobs and those obsessing about science fiction illustration -- I thought I'd share this link. Successful designer/illustrator/hand-letterer Jessica Hische discusses pricing.
It probably goes without saying, but the kind of numbers she's talking about are not for messy digital paintings or iphone game art, they are for meticulously crafted, mature work suitable for large corporate clients' branding and ad campaigns. A glimpse into another world, really.

Not sure why these type of articles are thin on the ground. There are plenty more who could pass on a similar education to others while doing themselves no harm. In fact, it probably would help the established Professional as well as the noob to get the rates their skill deserves.
