    Hi Vulgar

Apologies for being thick, but I'm scratching my head here. Who or what are the Horned Ones and what is Topic brief "This could get ugly." referring to??

The choice is yours! The quote "this could get ugly" was mostly me playing around. The topic is pretty open-ended, succeptible to your imaginations.

Hope this answers the question, I probably should've addressed this in the brief.

I started with a few color roughs.
These feel not enough like temples but fortesses so far...
but I'm just playing around and might come up with something else.

Hello everyone! Some rough setup from me too, mostly for forcing myself into this round. Any feedback/crit is appreciated. :]

@monotony: I really love the palette on these ones, especially the bottom two. I think that these have most potential, especially emphasizing the depth of the chasm (maybe by increasing the height/width ratio and choosing a more dynamic vanishing point?) as opposed to the top ones that have a more "static" feel.

Unfortunately, I don't think I have time to participate in this round myself, but it'll be a real treat seeing what everyone comes up with!

Sounds like a great topic, I'm in!

@Monotony- Great thumbs, I like the colour pallete of the top left piece.
@albino-Z - A challenging perspective mate, should look great.

figured I'd give this one a go...I need a lot of practice with environment design.

    sketch so far

Artiphats: love that upper left comp
albino-Z: great angle...looking forward to seeing it come to life
monotony: I swear I saw the clouds moving in the upper right version...looks great.

albino-Z, no they are just custom brushes in Photoshop. I pick a couple that I either made or came across, make sure Angle Jitter is turned on, turn transparency down, and just keep throwing down lights and darks to carve out big shapes. Then I go over with more speckle and texture types of brushes to get general details. I do use Alchemy though, and I love it like one of my children just didn't use it this time.

Bergy68, yeah I like that one too. I like the water element of the upper right one though, and I might incorporate those two together. I had the idea that the temple was near the water and had been attacked by sea ships. We'll see what turns up though

Started fleshing out the image a bit, trying to figure where I want lighting and shadows. Trying to keep it simple for now.

    Wow! Some cool stuff!

@Monotony: I really dig the ones of the temple down in the crevice.

@Artiphats: Those are some cool brushes. I actually made some similar ones that I was considering using, but I don't want it to seem like I'm ripping you off.

    A few thumbs I did...

"Contrary to the belief of the layman, the essential of art is not to imitate nature, but under the guise of imitation to stir up excitement with pure plastic elements: measurements, directions, ornaments, lights, values, colors, substances, divided and organized according to the injunctions of natural laws. While so occupied, the artist never ceases to be subservient to nature, but instead of imitating the incidents in a paltry way, he imitates the laws."-Andre Lhote

I sketched out ten thumbnails and settled on this one.
Through a bunch of critiques, I've managed to identify composition as my weakest skill, so I'm really going to pour a lot of time and effort into this one.
    Hopefully.
