Red face Paint 2 Pixel - Update 03/17/2013 Massive update!

After lurking on this forum for years, finishing my fine arts degree and getting a wacom, i've decided to join in on the digital painting fun. I've just started to make some things in painter, fiddlin' around trying to get the hang of things.
It's not near some of the stuff that on here, but i'll have a go at it

Inspiring stuff all round this forum. Hope to improve as i go. It's great fun and minus the white spirit. ;P

Here are some starters. Lacking some color depth, but not to shabby for a first try IMHO. Feel free to CC

Another self portrait study in painter.

From a photo made during a suicide headache attack. 3 hours of doodling.

Boughed myself a sketchbook to do some studies and drawings on the go. Before i just used a envelope to draw on or any other piece of paper for that matter. Got myself some conte's too.

Made 2 studies the girl is a studie from a clothing commercial that was pin the paper. I liked the perspective.

The portrait is a friend of mine used the a photo as ref.
I tend to get to focused on details shape of eyes, nose, mouth it has to be that persons, i think if i make it simpler and more straight forward, the portraits will improve. and i need to be more focussed on the freaking hight of the eyes and placement of the mouth. Or maybe he just has such a face, what can i do about it...
Well thats why i got a sketchbook i guess.

C&C are more then welcome, Thanks for your time.

After the whole day watching CRTL-Paint tuto's i did a first try at Photoshop just to fiddle around a bit.

it works different then Painter. Dunno what i like best. more options in PS but painter has that Painterly feel to it, with PS lacks. (unless somebody knows how to use PS in a painterly manner?) For now i'll just use both i guess.

Prefab brushes are like cheating though.

Well here is my mech-FXgalore-robot-sketchup. The mech sucks though it's dull and bland.
Try to work as the crtl-paint tuto's explained. Didn't get all the things right, but not a bad effort after spending whole day watching tuto's with a hangover

another one, did this one in PS and it shows.... i need to use some other brushes to do some painting. the drawing part went pretty well and isn't too bad but the color part looks like some plastic overlay. I guess i need to practice some more

Also made a Flip Horizontal shortcut ^^ very frustrating... but Ooh so necessary.

Was working in my studio today and figured i could combine my oil painting and Photoshop.

So did a trail, underpainting and color with PS (normal, multiply, color dodge layer used):

Oil Portrait i'm working on. First time i used an underpainting. color really pop this way.

Still in progress not done yet. It's to neat this way, thinking of trowing in some yellow browns in the background breaking that bright yellow.

    Lemme know what you think.

Nice work! I like your brushwork, very expressive! Try not to make your portraits look too airbrushy/soft though, like in the male portrait (colored version)!

A Little evening WIP. Gonna try and flesh out the skulls. (pardon the pun)
To see if is can get them more crisp and clean. Gotto loose that overly smudgy layerish look.
BTW; its after a photo i made in the museum today, its a case with Geert Groote and his disciple's bones. Founder of Devotio Moderna ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Devotio_Moderna ) for anyone who's interested.
Weird stuff to be put on display for over 600 years.

    Anyway thanks for watching.

Some of these are very cool, im very impressed with your self portrait in paint, what a deathly process and it looks pretty great, love the colours too.
Keep working with PS and lets see what you get to :F

Thanks for the reply. Yeah i'll keep grinding the hours, in painter and PS

a little painter portrait practice, this time i only used blend function and visco, no alpha channels and fiddled around with bush settings.

And a WIP of a dude trapped in.... well.... stuff. working @ 300DPI 40x60cm but my computer doesn't agree.

Cool sketchbook man , seems like you're not as good with Ps as with painter .
Maybe you should try and put off the opacity in your brush settings and put on the flow instead .

@Blaster: thanks for the Tip. I did a quicky in PS with flow and i must say its seems to handle a lot better, for me that is. Think I'll switch some more between PS and Painter as i have a lot more to learn from them both.

I really like what's going on in here in terms of characters and "character" for that matter. The subjects seemed turned on to some thing or another and not just dull lifeless or staring off into space. Also the whole thing comes off as more painterly rather than a scratchy struggle with drawing ability. For the most part you seem to have good facility with recognizing proportions but that might be because you have not imposed any constraints on the process. I bet if you challenged yourself just an little bit more in some way or another in your composition you might break the sound barrier so to speak. Good luck! Be around...

@cout<mecha: Thanks for the crit, i've been trying to figure out how to use the programs painter & PS. Hence the portrait and draw from photo kind of style. I still feel i need to figure things out so i can get a natural way with the digital painting experience
But some more composition could give the images a big boost, but thats for a later stage. Also i have painted on canvas for the last few years and usually don't use a composition based on a story, but usually end up with a single subject and try to translate it to a canvas. I guess i come from a more fine arts kinda deal rather then the concept art position. (although it was where my aspirations where before i started art school)
Still its worth keeping the composition more in mind. /ramble

Started to a little project to get some focus going.
Gonna try and make a more contemporary version of the girl with the peaches made by Rembrand. (guess what that painting was about )

So gonna start off with some fast studies to get my head around it.
beneath the Rembrand and the first go. Last time i saw this painting in RL was 3 years ago. maybe i should pay a visit to the museum and go look at the real thing.

@Blaster thanks again for the flow hint, it agrees with me.
