I came up with this tonight and would really appreciate some solid critique/feedback before I go any further. It feels a bit overworked to me. In any case, thanks in advance, your help is greatly appreciated!
looks pretty splendid to me, if a bit dark.
i just tweaked the levels a bit and mixed up the colour levels here and there.
if you look at them side by side the original one was pretty similar all round in value.
EDIT: come to think of it i sure hope those weren't just the base layers and you planned on adding highlights later. if so disregard all the above. ;_;
Thanks for taking the time to critique my work. I agree, the lighting is a bit murky; as you said I do still have yet to apply the highlights, although, I feel that the overall lighting should have already been taken care of in the blocking-in stage. I'll give the lighting a revamp and see what I can come up with.
I decided to redo the painting to hopefully get a better sense of light and shadow. I also took it a bit further in detail and added a snake as a tail.
What do you think? Thanks guys!
the idea is good, but once you not gave detais to the background, you could make a highet contrast between the dragon and the background...
for the rest, I think it is ok and well done... best regards
I decided to go monochromatic for now so I can better grasp the lighting. I've also started to flesh out the background. I've never painted a landscape before, so this has certainly been a learning experience. If anybody has any tips on how to paint/block in cliffs, please let me know.
It's probably not a big deal, but the last colour version looks a lot like Scrat from Ice Age. It's mainly the markings, teeth and fur tuft down his spine.
As I say, it's no great shakes, but it gave the idea to suggest that you make little thumbnails of this dragon with different markings and features (different wing/horn types, play around with the tail-tip, etc.) The basic design is perfect though, so even if you decided to mix it up a little, it wouldn't require a complete do-over. Hope that helps!
I think it's adorable!
All I've got to say is watch out for how that cliff in the background sticks into the dragon's butt! It looks a little... yeah ;p

LOL xD.All I've got to say is watch out for how that cliff in the background sticks into the dragon's butt!
Anyway, I really like it. Very cute design. I'm not sure about his right wing, seems to be in a weird angle, check it with some ref and is it just me or is it missing its rear right leg?
