    Teen Challenge 132: The Parasite

    Teen Challenge 132: The Parasite

    Teen Challenge 132: The Parasite

    Topic
This week's topic is The Parasite.
I'll leave this one fairly open for you, so it can be any sort of parasite and can be taking advantage of any sort of animal or plant. You can make it all up or can use existing parasites if you like

    Focus
This weeks focus is complimentary colours. Some of you love them, some of you hate them. Either way I want to see complimentary colours in this round (if you don't know what this is do a quick google search!). Also, keep in mind that the colours don't need to be super strong--you can do a piece with strong purples and yellows or a piece with soft yellows and subtle purplish grays. Either works but they have different effects, so choose wisely!

    Deadline
The deadline is Sunday 4th of September, 23:59 GMT

Wait so is the focus only on the parasite or throughout the whole composition?

Like Yellow thing on a purple background, or a parasite with yellow and purplish hues, or do they both apply?

The focus applies to the entire image. The parasite can be any colour you like. Also just to clear up any confusion, it doesn't have to be yellow and purple, but any complimentary pair is fine (orange-blue, red-green).

Here's a quick rough of what I have so far. I had to think for quite a bit before I got an image in my head, I actually had to do some google image and wiki searches to get some ideas haha. anyways, looking forward to what everyone puts out

    Started on this...
Need to study some caustic lighting, coz this looks pretty poop. The light rays are hiding some of the darkness as well so i think ill tone them or move them to the background.

DTP: It looks good so far, but I'm not sure exactly how it is a parasite? I also like the first version a bit more since it doesn't have the orange light from below. Without the orange light it keeps a stronger silhouette and is a more powerful image in my mind. Anyways, the following might be helpful:
    http://gurneyjourney.blogspot.com/2008/06/caustics.html

Also, check out Stanley Meltzoff (google him up a bit) since his stuff should be right up your alley for this painting. Basically the best painter of fish and things underwater ever.

Its supposed to be some kind of creature attached to the back of a whale lol. The orange is supposed to be the colour of the parasite which is why its only on the worm-like tentacles. It was also just an excuse to get the focus of the challange into the pic since i couldnt think of another way to do it in the deep water where things all pretty much look blue. You're spot on about the silhouette though, i think ill tweak the colours and make it darker again to bring it out from the background.
Thanks for the links, ill check it out

I think this is due soon, so it sucks I didn't get to work on it...
But I'm gonna try to work on this thing today. It's really basic so far and I only have stuff like blocked in. I'm not totally sure what to do about a background, does anybody have any ideas?
Oh, and by the way, the wires will be going to the head... Because it feeds off negative emotions... Ugghhh I only spent like 10 minutes on it so far >.<

@blazingdimensions: I'm happy I'm not the only one starting today! You encourage me. I think that right now, the piece could use some more flow or dynamism; Maybe moving the parasite to the upper and right third? And some foreshortening could beef it up too. I guess.

dye-lawn - i like the piece- i like the use of duller colors but i think you should make the yellows a little bit brighter so they'll stick out a little

I hate to say this, but that doesn't look a whole lot like a finger, it looks more like...well...you know.

@ozking193- the finger is off, like mentioned before. the crease should be lower and the contour shouldn't look symmetrical

    Any last minute crits?

EDIT: Noticed the middle finger needs to be raised and index finger needs to be lowered a bit, so disregard that.

Last minute advice! A friend of mine said to tilt the image, and I think it adds to it. Does anybody have any opinon? I think I'll just go with the tilted one for the final. Thank you very much for any advice.
