    So I decided my last effort was a trainwreck. Here's a new sketch. Not sure I'll finish but at least there's a bit more story in here as opposed to a generic contra posta pose. Time for some dinner

    Finished up the mecha, which was a load of fun and decided the pilot did not suit it. Played around in google sketch and knocked up a quick flight deck, then started from scratch on the pilot. Simpler design with more focus on functionality and the japanese flavour. Actually worked out well with the mecha design as the 'Rising Sun' is very similar to the Macross Logo, not that I want to be that obvious with the tie-in though.
    I still have to design and add her helm in her left hand and am thinking of making her right into a fist, for more attitude in the pose.

    Playing around with shadow shapes and lighting before any more rendering & textures.

    C&C welcome

    Narko - The perspective is looking much better than in the last update. Since you have a strong light source coming from the front and to the right of her, I think the lighting on the character could show that a bit more with some darker areas turning away from it. I think I would try some atmospheric perspective between her and the mecha to push it back more and to give it more depth between the character and the mecha too maybe. Same with the pillars too, I feel like it needs a bit of atmospheric perspective between them as they recede off into space too

    Heya thanks Gadbury

    Yeah I have not done any lighting on the Pilot or Mecha yet, still trying to play with the shadow shapes as part of the composition. I added some 'projected' light to add some light shapes to frame the characters - You can see it just runs right on behind the mecha over the BG sky.
    Once I am happy with the composition I will blend those forms into the image and work on lighting up the chars.

    Wish I had more time to play this week but as usual I dont think I will be able to fully realize my vison for this one. I gotta learn to work faster & looser

    @Gadbury
    Top class..
    @Narko
    Its coming good. Maybe the perspective on the boxes conflicts the perspective on the floor.
    ah-spire
    I like the character.
    @Drygrass
    I like the design of the mech perhaps adjust the legs slightly so it got more balance.

    Awesome prompt, and it looks everyone's is coming along great so far

    Working on something like a child prodigy pilot, her mech was made from an old swing set.

    Here is an update close to final. I struggled with this round because I dont know how to make the pilot the focus and still show the mech. I guess I should have done more thumbnails. I will see if I can add more high-tech bits for the mech and maybe that will look futuristic enough. Right now I'm not happy that it doesn't look science fictional enough.

    I'm guessing the pilot design is first priority, planning to put some medals and 'wings' insignia eventually, plus her obedient samurai mecha in the background. Just started so hoping to finish in time.

    Wip update...

    Feeling good enough about the setup now to begin filling in the uniform details, although I need to paint with more vibrant colour, I think. I have in mind a blending of modern JSDF uniform details with accents and ideas from WW2 Soviet tank crew and RAF uniforms, with some electronics here and there.

    It gets cold in those mech cockpits, so naturally there must be some cozy sheep fleece details!

    JanJager: I'm really digging your image a lot! I like how the mecha has the same "hair" as the pilot too, IMO that really ties the two together with one motif. One question though, how the hell does the dog get down that ladder? hahaha

    Artfix - I don't know, I think yours does well in making the character the focus. I agree about the science fiction stuff though.

    Love your painterly looking strokes though, very nice so far

    You can fix this by adding some distinctly "science fiction" shapes to the mech without distracting from the main character. The great thing about sci-fi is that it doesn't always have to make sense what function every single piece has. Look at this picture:

    Notice how there are certain shapes (like on Zero Gundam's head, thighs, etc) that don't really serve any immediately apparent purpose but they add to the science fiction look of him. Geometric shapes are a good default. Maybe just have some rising off the pilot and fading into the background? Size is another great way to make something seem like its futuristic.

    This is such a great CHOW I wish I could have participated! I will have more crits laterrrrrrrr!

    There are so many incredible entries this round. pld:

    nilfheim If you want to add some Japanese elements try looking up historical/modern references for Japanese culture, maybe even ask if anyone you know has ever lived in Japan for considerable amount of time and talk to them about the culture for ideas. Also might help to research facial structures of Japanese women, of course all Japanese women don't look the same but there are some physical commonalities among people of similar ethnic backgrounds. Hope that helps and you get some ideas soon

    ~baxter Awesome colors and composition, looking great. Watch the foreshortening on that right arm, it looks tiny.

    David Brasgalla I actually like the subtle color scheme, I think it's fine as it is. Not sure if a vibrant splash of color would fit with the mood you've created there, but I guess it's something to explore.

    Pixeltuner Your artwork always makes me feel bad about myself. That is all.
