    CHoW#258 :: The Gunslinging Alchemist

    Character of the Week #258
    The Gunslinging Alchemist

-Design a character for a fantasy western video game-

    DEADLINE: SUNDAY 28th AUGUST 2011, 9PM GMT+1
    Check your timezone!

Time to dust of those spurs, mix some elixirs and mount your steed as this week's challenge takes place in a fantasy western environment. We would like you to create a skilled gunslinging character but with a twist, instead of normal bullets, this cowboy shoots special ammo filled with potions, elixirs and poisons they have created. In addition to fantastically modified guns, the gunslinger always carries a massive amount of vials and ingredients about their person, never sure when they might need to whip up a new bath of toxins to defeat foes, or health potions to heal friends. The gunslinger is quick, agile and always ready to leap into action, and more importantly, they enjoy it!

    The Guidelines:
    • This can be either male or female
    • A wild west setting but have fun with fantasy and scifi elements!
    • Think about what fuels their weapons/potions/elixirs etc, is it magic? science? alien technology?
    • This is quite a cocky character and rather full of themself, so no 'dark, brooding strangers'.
    • Think carefully about the weaponry, it needs to look overly modified to suit the gunslinger's needs, but it still needs to be recognisable and easy to carry/use (They need to be fast!!!)!

    THE RULES
In addition to the brief, if you do not follow these rules, you will not be included in the poll.
    • Files must be named: CHoW#258_Username
(Files with any other names such as final.jpg or even chow258final.jpg will not be accepted)
    • Finals must be posted in the finals thread BEFORE the deadline
    • Final post must include the CHoW number and the artists username at the bottom of the image
    • At least 3/4 of the focus character must be visible
    • Final images must be accompanied with a basic character sheet in a separate image
Character sheets should at the very least show a sketch of the front and back of the character and a couple of early thumbnails/silhouettes.
    • Follow the brief!

Man, that's weird - I was just thinking of starting a cowboy related painting, and thought to myself "I wonder what the chances are this weeks Chow is cowboy related?"

I'm in for sure, didn't finish last weeks Chow due to laziness

EDIT// i decided to keep my updates in one post, and see how that works!

i have a whole weeks break, wich means im so gonna try get something done for this week \o/
this is my first rough idea, i dont know, to much steampunk maybe D:

    Attachment 1306235

i sketched out 2 more last night right after the other but to tired to upload then, so here they are, i might just take a little from all of them and do one more last one D:
this is fun tho, see if i can remember how to color in photoshop as i barely touched it the last couple of months (damn you school for traditional drawing !)

    Attachment 1306934

heres my third try, taking bits from the previous ones, trying not to make it to cluttered with details but dunno if i lost a bit of the fun that the others had...feedback appreaciated!
i was thinking instead of having all those bullets giving her little bags, i dunno what it called, satchels? around her belts with different type of bullets in, like the seven planetary metals or something; gold, silver, copper, tin, iron, mercury and lead bullets wooh D:

@Dcritelli Interesting gun u got there! yea the attitude's a hard one.
@Bethany K. yea more alchemist stuff in there would be good!
@rumpenstiltzkin hey u got some nice designs going in there. think steampunk's cool, as long as its still alchemist-ish rite?
@YouAreNotAlone ya the 1st's good. but i kinda like the big gun for the second and he's got nice boots too.

Awesome topic! Here's my initial silhouettes sketch. Man, I have no idea which to go with, but so far think i'm liking #1 more…or #5? #2 and #4 got some nice elements in them too. Guys, I need some help with choosing!

Hmm, there might be too much "alchemist" and too little "gunslinging" in this sketch of mine.

rumpenstiltzkin - looking pretty sweet to me!
YouAreNotAlone - Looks good! Since you're kind of going for an indian look, maybe some more native indian type hair, like a mohawk or braiding or something?
yongs - I like the silhouette of 5 best. maybe have him holding the brim of his hat or something?

I'm so awesome I spent 2 hours sketching a "dark, brooding stranger" before realizing that's not what the brief called for. So went back to the drawing board and came up with this. I think I got the swaggering cowboy look down, but I need to think about how to play with the gun so he's more alchemisty. I incorporated some native american trinkets in his outfit though, to try to make a connection between alchemy and shamanism, and hint that underneath that swagger is a tortured soul. Yeah, that's the dark broody stranger design trying to push through. Crits appreciated!

Making a start - I know this looks like more of an illustration again, but I'm going to do a more finished character design sheet to go with it this time, hopefully

Here's a rough sketch. I took "quite a cocky character" to mean "kind of a douche". Currently resisting an urge to give him shades and put a spoiler on the back of the horse.

Dcritelli - cool character - has more realistic look than the usual 10gallon hat. Intersting gun design. what is it shooting?

Bethany k - very cool line of motion to her. nice expression too

Rumplestilzkin - Excellent toon feel. some real smart details in already

youarenotalone - very nice progress. dig the red indian elements. cool face. I see the dragon.l I was also thinking of adding a familar

yongs - cool stuff. I think 4 is out as he looks a little heavier/slower than the others. my personal pref would probably be 2 with the arms from 5 & a lil tweak to the hat. really dig the the coat.

Dionesiist - I would just push this further. i think the gunslinging will be quite clear and you have some cool elements in their already

ryansumo - really liking your style - he has alot of character already. I get the bowed legs but that with his rather heavy frame does not really lend itself to making him appear "quick & Agile" although assumptions like that are the mother of all f*****s

pixeltuner - love your take on this theme looks pretty much done, just a little cleaning up and balancing. Pink gun thingies = win!

gadbury - Splatergames great sense of action. i feel your rider looks a lil too big for the horse specialy when reffed with your figures in the BG.

Sean Mclain - fast progress great POV. is that an ICE gun?

Koalapanda - my fave so far. excellent character sketch. great face. Some issues with the left hand and the tangent of the rifle running into his leg. maybe something like holding the rifle accros his chest so it points up and to one side at more of an angle?

fuhrenator - dig the painterly feel. get a lil Joker feel from him just rem. the 3/4 rule.

Mj Alcazar - really excellent charater sketch. only thing i'd say is the the weapon design does not really tie into the rest of the design. maybe try to integrate it somehow by repeating some of its curves in her clothing?

Trying to get working on this a lil earlier in the week.
Just working on some basic poses and lighting. All clothing and detail still to come.

    Any input or faves welcome

    Hey all,

First time poster here, (got the file name right this time) so a quick hello to everyone participating in this weeks CHoW!

So with this guy, I had trouble steering away from buccaneer/musketeer designs but I think im getting there though ':I
Going for an old, highly dedicated, athletically fit, veteran marshal/sheriff approach.

    One idea

    Half french/ half chinese.
Lost her lower legs as a child experimenting in her fathers fireworks factory.
created her own solid rocket boosters to get around quick if she has to.
Carries 'medicine case' full of her work -case has concealed gun.

Added guy with hair/mutton chops permanently blasted back and no eyebrows.
Medicinal alchohol in one hand vials of goodies lining his coat

lach-land - like the look of the 3rd guy, but like you said it doesn't fit the agile component. The other concepts look quite fun as well though.
ryansumo - the weapon a character carries can say a lot about them.
M!CK - loving the cow one. great humor and sense of speed.
fuhrenator - careful of the anatomy on the arms. The left one seems a bit flat and tiny compared to the other.
rumpenstiltzkin - Digging the designs, really loved the personality in the second piece, the girl the the gun over he shoulder.
YouAreNotAlone - boots are sweet, digging how you hit us with the alch with the highlights.
Dionesiist - nice, but watch the anatomy in the chest and hands
fudgeloaf - fun take with the plants, almost like to see it pushed a little more.
Rusty - chick and cow look great.
Gadbury - great speed and action, love to see how the character comes along.
Sean McClain - great angle, but beware the perspective on his head. His chin looks a little squat.

My it's been a long time since I've done this, exactly why I'm doing it! So I've come up with a rough drawing for the CHOW itself, as well as first half of the character sheet. Worried about cutting off half of the characters head on the piece itself, as well as work on the perspective on the guns and forms.

Anyway, I figured he would carry different pieces of equipment. A "sun lens" to start fires, tubes and spoons and things for mixing in the field. Pouches on his cape for herbs and vials of whatever he needs. His ammo is on his belt (not sure the actual term) that he loads into his gun.

    Crits very much appreciated!
