Britain has shops dedicated to the exclusive sale of lightbulbs?

    Cripes! That's just weird. . .

I mean, I can understand stores that sell just alcohol , tobacco , or firearms

    but, lightbulbs?!?!

Lowest common denominator of what? If you're looking at standardized IQ tests for example, lowest recorded range around 20-40. If that was the target audience, one would miss the widest audience, which are the averages.

'Lowest common denominator' is a popular used colloquial term when someone wants to express themselves in a derogatory fashion about the audience that politicians and mass marketers tend to target.

Statistically, and realistically, they target the segment that will bring them the biggest response, maximize profit, get the votes, whatever the goal of the campaign is. Lowest common denominator doesn't give you majority exposure. Most common and lowest common are not the same thing. Most common is seldom the lowest. Most common tends to be close to average. In some cases they can be synonymous.

Highest and lowest tend to give you minority exposure.

I have learned two things from this thread.

1- It is not the "lowest common denominator", in terms of correct usage of the word, but the "greatest common divisor".

    2-

I self-published a book on the fundamentals of drawing from life.

Political candidates most often gain appeal by smiling and affirming their love of the electorate (pandering), while dodging any and all issues - which appeals to most people within their political party. I'm not sure it's really based on any level of intellect.

It's a shop. A shop that has lightbulbs in. There might be other stuff too, but I like to think that's why the guy had enough time on his hands to be the island's prime minister.

Here, people get in power because no one else voted but maybe their mum, who probably felt obliged to from politeness.
Manx politics. Imagine how the world would be if everywhere was run like here.

Takes about 10 odd years of England's bullying at a go to make us take a single political step.
