plugged in & ready to fall [daily sketches]

Hi! My name's Charlie (as if you couldn't tell from the obnoxious lettering in my signature) and I'm 22 years old. I live in the UK and I've been drawing for as long as I can remember. I've recently been diagnosed with social anxiety disorder, but that affects me in life more than it does on the intertubes, so I'm looking forward to talking to you all and learning your opinions!

Please feel free to critique me as much as possible; I need all of the help I can get. I'm hoping to go into a foundation course at Middlesex University and then advance onto an Illustration course.

This is my old sketchbook that I all but abandoned due to family issues and other worrying things that had happened... The last two years have been very hard for me and I'm finally coming out at the other side.

Thank you for joining me on my journey!

I've drawn these over the past couple of days with photo references from human-anatomy-for-the-artist.com. I was subscribed a few months ago and I saved a bunch of files, so I have a bunch left over from that.

These two were done yesterday... I hated the blank space in the bottom right corner, so I decided to make a Portal 2 joke.

Aaaand today I only managed one sketch (again referenced from my stash of poses), so I'll add in a little something I did a week or so ago.

Been having a bad past couple of days. I think I've picked up the flu... I've done some sketches in my sketchbook (nothing major), and I can't get to the scanner for the moment so I've done some more stuff from imagination on Paint Tool Sai.

Fanart of Sherlock from BBC's Sherlock. If you haven't seen it, you definitely should!

One sketch from imagination, followed by life drawing sessions with my friend. References from human-anatomy-for-the-artist.com again.

Not been around for a little while; I've had some computer trouble. I'm back on now and I'm drawing as I should be!

I just did a painting type thing using Corel Painter and- well, I haven't done a painting in over 5 years so I'm okay with it. It's a bit flat and a bit dull but hopefully I'll start learning more about colour etc the more I try it out.

I did have more, but I can't seem to find one of my photo/life drawing files... ah well, I'll just have to draw more of 'em.

Ooookay. so I haven't posted in here for a while, but that's because I'm freaking myself out over my portfolio work. I have most of my recent stuff up here, so I don't want to repost everything because it'd be silly.

I'd really appreciate any and all critiques...

You know man, despite your need for constructive drawing I do like the energy and life in your gestures and contours. Now you just need to study and make the two meet - that's the hard part, takes a lot of work and constant re-development. You can do it!

@ Pezz Sorry I didn't see this sooner! Thank you! It's definitely the hard part, I feel like I keep coming up against a blank wall lately. But I'll keep trying.

Some new sketches... I'm really feeling burnt out lately.

I know that burnt-out feeling, and the good thing about it is that it passes. I find trying something new or just messing around and having fun instead of serious studies helps me get over it. Or even just taking a small break - do maybe like, 10 gestures or something and call it a day and go relax. Life is long, you can afford some downtime.

I'm honestly surprised your sketchbook doesn't have more comments! But they'll start rolling in. I like the way your lines are loose and free. Pezz is right though, you've got to practice those forms in the figure and not just focus on contour. It's something I have trouble with as well. Keep going!

See, I've been relaxing too much lately! I think it's why that blocked feeling keeps hitting me. Luckily my life drawing classes have started up again, so I'm drawing every week without any exceptions.

Aah, thank you so much for commenting! I just figured my art wasn't all that interesting so most people just breezed by it. I have started doing more figure studies with colour and such, because I know I'm almost comfortable with my contour drawings. I guess we've both gotta keep working at, huh? Thanks again.
