    CHoW#256 :: Future artist

    Character of the Week #256
    Future artist

-Create a design of a future artist-

    DEADLINE: SUNDAY 14th AUGUST 2011, 9PM GMT+1
    Check your timezone!

A long time has passed, human culture and technology has evolved a lot from the current day. It is a time of high culture, and artists of all sorts are regarded with high value and respected, while the old masters of past days are revered as gods. Digital art is blooming with the new technology and traditional artists are equipped with the state of the art tools for their trade. In this future society, some artists live a bohemian life, while some are living a very high tech, modern life.

    The Guidelines:
    • This can be either male or female
    • Design either a traditional or a digital artist in a future world
    • Think about the fashion of the era, it is a time of high culture!
    • Keep the artist's equipment or tools in mind when making the design
    • This is a sci-fi genre, so please stick to it

    THE RULES
In addition to the brief, if you do not follow these rules, you will not be included in the poll.
    • Files must be named: CHoW#256_Username
(Files with any other names such as final.jpg or even chow256final.jpg will not be accepted)
    • Finals must be posted in the finals thread BEFORE the deadline
    • Final post must include the CHoW number and the artists username at the bottom of the image
    • At least 3/4 of the focus character must be visible
    • Final images must be accompanied with a basic character sheet in a separate image
Character sheets should at the very least show a sketch of the front and back of the character and a couple of early thumbnails/silhouettes.
    • Follow the brief!

Whoa, looks like there's gonna be a whole bunch of awesomeness! =D
NickyBeats Haha, first one looks so happy =D Don't forget the huge headhones or loudspeakers - more music more fun)
Well, if the old masters are revered as gods, then future artists can be counted as saints or their messiah, highly respected and worshipped.
Gonna add a lot of wires and etc...

Hahaha, I think I'm going to have a lot of fun with this one.

Concept: A performance artist who eats synthetically grown human meat in ritzy gallery settings*. Probably while someone plays the cello or sings an aria. Inspired by Millie Brown, a performance artist who drinks colored milk and then vomits it onto a canvas and NO I AM NOT PROVIDING A LINK thankyouverymuch.

My first shots at sci-fi bo-ho outfits below!

NickyBeats: I dig the idea of a wacom gauntlet! Also, potent space coffee!

    * TO CHALLENGE YOUR IDEAS ABOUT 'CIVIL SOCIETY' AND THE CONSUMPTION OF SYNTHETIC FOODS AND THE VOYEURISTIC DESIRE OF ART ADMIRERS TO SEE THE BLEEDING EDGE OF BEAUTY OF COURSE IT IS VERY BOUNDRY-PUSHING YOU JUST WOULDNT UNDERSTAND

MasterTroglodyte: Some kind of holographic projection tablet? I'd buy it.

NickyBeats: Wacom Gaunlet I think you should stick with this idea and go through a few more design iterations for the glove. I'm liking the superhero-esque look.

YouAreNotAlone: Can't wait to see this guy reach godly status once this is finished. Awesome idea.

Drygrass: These are all so good. 3, 10, and 11 stand out to me for some reason.

    I figure I'll give this a try even though I'm a novice.

I was thinking women's Renaissance fashion for the first one. But with a giant circular harness that serves as a palette/giant brush holder attached to the dress. So like... Neo Renaissance? Want to add some more modern/futuristic elements to an old style of clothing.

3rd/4th are something along the lines of a traditional potter's wheel configured to work with modeling programs like zbrush. No idea what the 2nd could be but the shape popped into my head for some reason.

    Lol, what a utopia!
Very nice topic I must say, will probably sketch up something again without participating.
I would imagine in the far (!) future, artists work solely from their mind, not using drawing tools at all. Oils have run out by then

Oooh it's been a while since I've done CHoW

I'm thinking of doing an artist who's sculptures can move/look like they're alive. Sort of like a future version of the Pygmalion myth... or.. something :/

Great stuff from everyone so far as usual. Here is my start not sure if i should rethink it but anyway. I'm going for the high life style of the digital artist. At the moment the fact that she is an artist doesn't really come through but i'm am planning to show the tabs on her finger and thumb moulding and sculpting on a digital projection.

I assume we can't go all IDW and post an image of a sentient computer? would be too easy ~

The only other image I currently have are either of Deus Ex like argumentations or a homless bum sitting in a corner on a busy street ~ or I think that I'm better with dystopias than high-culture.

& because of this, and I'll probably regret this, I'm in.

As awesome as it was it was actually really awkward to keep it updated between two people! And when the rules changed we realised that we needed to rethink it. So we're working on something even more awesome to replace it

If you imagine the rule of thumb being that the artist needs to create something visual (Painting, Photo, Sculpture, Video). Whilst performance are can be 'viewed' it's not really the same thing as it's only 'art' whilst it's being performed if that makes sense.

Rinibee - I think it does. Basically you're looking for artists who create visual, lasting pieces of work? I shall rework me concept!

Edit by Rinibee: Yes Sorry to hijack your post, but it seemed silly to post a one word answer

many of them are not directly related but I think we can draw some inspiration from some of them...

at first i was going along the lines of green lantern; can think (in this case draw) anything into reality, but i decided that wasn't such a great idea.

This is a really cool topic! I thought of an idea a while back where an artist's concpets actually became real. Like there was some kind of machine/portal that would generate the artist's ideas into an actual being or object. It'll be rather difficult for someone of my skills to effectively portray this into a piece within just one week, but it'll be fun to try. Of course I'm gonna give it some holographic digital painting/sculpting.

Art is not about competing against others and being better than everyone else, but it is about competing against yourself and discovering your greatest potential!
