Ok, to your credit, I forget how young you are Stragan.

But seriously man, when are you going to lighten up and enjoy life? Crossing these kinds of bridges is part of growing up and some life lessons can only be taught by experiencing them first hand.

Maybe it's time to step back from the net for a bit?

    Dear Stragan,

I too have had to deal with such issues. Fortunately, through many decades (2) of trial and error, I have found a solution. The first, most important thing is to procure a roll of duct tape, polyfiller, a washing pin a wet suit and water-proof, airtight gloves. What you're going to do is get into the wet suit and proceed to air-tightly seal every part of your body except for the soles of your feet.

See, either evolution or God did a shoddy job because human skin is simply too porous, it allows for far too much osmosis. Except for the soles of our feet, which has very thick, dense skin. Recent studies reveal asphyxiation to be a myth, and by rapidly depriving your body of its usual avenues for oxygen intake you can force yourself to start breathing through your feet. If all goes well, it should just kick into place! In the long run it's also much better, because not only does the oxygen immediately get absorbed into the blood stream, but the longer travel distance to your heart forces your body to pump faster and thereby making you much fitter and healthier. It's also a more extensive filtering process.

Now, you might wonder how you would go about eating? This is the tricky part. You need to stitch your esophagus to your liver. that way, your body will be able to efficiently recycle all the nutrients already inside. It also ensures that no new bacteria get introduced into your system. It's best to do the procedure after consuming a good deal of alcohol (about 800 ml total, or 2 bottles of whiskey) as the alcohol will sterilize your system. Also, you'll want to do this procedure by yourself, lest someone compromise your intestines with their filthy germs.

But once it's all done, you'll never get sick again. Best of luck!

    Brendan Noeth

stragan, I don't mean any offense since you seem really young and naive, so I'm sure you don't realize what a ridiculous question this is, but it seems like the quality of question better suited for yahoo!answers...

You deal with it the same way as you need to deal all the crap in your life: You just struggle through.

If you catch something, you call in sick, take a painkiller and sleep it off. Depending on what you've caught you might need to do some vomiting as well. If it doesn't seem like a couple of days in bed will cure it then you go to a doctor and get some antibiotics or whatever the doc thinks best.

To avoid getting sick: eat a healthy variety of food, work out and take some vitamins. But eventually you will catch something and you will have to deal with it.

man Stragan again no offense but ...what is it with you? Did you grew up in the wild, with no one to tell you what life is like ? its like you dont even know the most basic things so that totally normal stuff scares the shit out of you, or you have to ask for advice . Are you sure that to live in New York is a good idea for you ? I think eventually this city is going to eat you alive . I mean look at this we are rather good-natured people around here but even we tend to not take your questions too serious, but to some degree we still dont try to snub you ....but New York, people that live there will just laugh at you for such questions.( thats the best case scenario ) ..you definitely have to become more thick-skinned and experienced before moving to one of the most vigorous cities in the world.

I think Stragan said he was 15, I know you meant to say your advice is for someone 21 or older.

Try to eat more healthy food and the usual "keep yourself warm", still, you might be sick someday so just make sure you never take lozenges, they help spreading the bacteries in your throath (my doctor said that) so it'll only make it worse, try getting checkups.
    good luck!

Y'know if you're going to college / dorms it's not "if I catch a cold" it's "when", especially at start of term.
It's not an uncommon side effect of being jammed into a large box with people from all over the country, all of whom brought special little varieties of colds and sniffles with them.
Short of living in a spacesuit there's not a great deal you can do.

You can eat right, keep fit etc but you're still catching something, guaranteed.

Wait, you're 15 and you're going to go live in noo yawk (that's how they say it) on your own?
    Kinda young don't you think?
You know what? Colds are good for you, you sure as hell can't die from the common cold, so all it does is improve your immune system, mine is great cos my mother let me play in the dirt all the time, I hardly get colds these days.

i am 100% sure i'll get something so got to prepare for it ya know
i just dont want those migraines that lasts for hours and eventually have me on the floor, especially when i am busy or in school. the way how i deal with it is just pop a pill or end up staying home. i can't afford the latter because i think 2 absences and you get expelled from college?
it always puzzled me how others go through it, especially at work. i used to see a teacher at school regularly and i noticed he always had advil on his desk.

hey im originally texan ok i dont have that accent

How to survive in NYC if you get sick and you're on your own? Throw on your shoes, walk yourself down to the nearest CVS or Duane Reade (there seems to be either one of those almost every block or so), get some NyQuil (or similar), go back home, take the meds and then get some sleep. If you're feeling really adventurous, you can even walk by your nearest Food Emporium (or equivalent) on the way home and pick up some soup for yourself!

Hell, if you're REALLY feeling crappy / lazy, you can get almost ANYTHING delivered in NYC to you at pretty much any time of day. Grab your phone, make some calls.

    TADA!

    You're welcome.

    ^_^

Sleep, slurp your soup, sleep some more. There's no cure to colds, in Germany we say it comes three days, stays three days, goes three days. Truest words ever spoken. You can only relieve the symptoms a bit - deal with it.

I get the flu once every year. I consider it a neat excuse to stay in bed for a day or two, with a good book. ;-)
