    Kippy's Character Designs

This is something I don't do enough of, mostly because there's very little need for me to do this kind of art in my field. But it's something I really want to improve on.

So feel free to give me conceptual challenges or point me towards any direction that will help me really improve in this area!

The header of this sketblog is a random mouse I drew, full image can be seen here.

Below are some various types of mythological creatures. Troll, Gremlin, and Kobold.

    Really nice lines. I'm surprised

    DAC Challenge : Pirates

    @ p sage
Haha... i guess I'll take that as a complement?

    ++++

For the sake of originality and practice, here are some character designs that were based on the DAC challenges on DA. This one with pirates.

Please let me know what's good and poor about them, what level they stand out in terms of creativity and how I could improve in terms of design and style.

Right now I'm focusing more on the anatomy than the clothes themselves.

    Gremlin 2.0

Based on this first concept. I changed the anatomy around to make it more functional to what they're designed to do.

I'm sick and have had dizzy spells so a lot of things are wonky here on the anatomy. Anyways, here's some species specs.

The antennae are made of tough cartilage with sensitive nobs at the end that help them to define spacial relation much like a cat. Despite the big eyes they're not powerful in terms of defining form. But they're great for detecting light due to their nocturnal nature.

Strong back limbs help them bound from place to place and their hoof like back claws allow them to easily dig up dirt. Their hands more delicate however and a bit smaller, those help them manipulate objects. And a strong tail allows for balance and sensing space as well.

The circles are the obvious anatomical mistakes that I need to fix.

    Russian Men

Some Russians I doodled a while back. The green ones are revamps of the red to some degree.

    ............c-can I.. adopt the mouse?

;-; got some nice work here. I love the mouse, beautifully rendered, and your other creature designs look good too. ..I don't really know much about that area myself (character design, that is), so I fear I don't have anything helpful to offer, but uh, keep it up? XD"

I am glad you have started this thread. I have always loved your original characters. I see more of you as an individual with your own ideas and concepts. With fan art, no matter how well done, it still feels like someone else's. Even in art, I believe that ideas and originality trump technical skill.

I look forward to seeing more added here!

That no. 2 guy is beautiful. Those facial features all squished up. Also, like always, I really adore your style.

    @ JesseM:
Haha! Thanks for the complement! It was a very fun piece and I learned a lot about color relations.

    @ AmandaMyers:
Thanks! The more encouragement I get the more likely I'm going to keep doing more and showing more of these concepts.

I think someone can make a renovation of a character all their own and it still be adequate character design, but I understand fully where you're coming from.

    @ Ayem:
Which one? The Russian guy or the pirate? And thanks bro! Means a lot coming from you.

I really like the mouse, very sweet, and his ears add that extra dimension.

    Project : Kitsune

For the kitsune challenge on DA, I decided to not be a stereotype and base my kitsune off of the Tibetan fox. Especially since Kitsune folklore can be found all throughout Asian.

This kitsune is supposed to look wise and serious. Most kitsune don't become masters of transformation until they're around a 100 and he's 270 years old.

He's very perceptive and wealthy, which is why he has a very thick and shiny coat.

He's often looking down on younger kitsunes who often misuse their power for short term goals, while the older generation (such as himself) use their powers for more long term goals.

Right now I'm just messing around with stylizing the anatomy of the Tibetan fox. It's not supposed to be 100% accurate, just enough to capture the physique and motion of the animal. From there I will give him more personality.

Really like the first canine - in the top left corner. His massive chest, little waist and then long legs balance each other wonderfully.
As for the guy I liked, the one with the no. 2 really close to him.

    Project : Kitsune 2

    @ Ayem
Thanks bro! I might just push those sketches later on and see where they take me.

    @ Darius-sama
Thanks! I hope to keep doing more! And also get into more people. Lord knows I need to - haha!

    ++++++++

Some more doodles for the Kitsune challenge over on DA.

While the studies of the foxes helped a bit here and there, they didn't really help me to define the character. So I began too look closely at what made the Tibetan fox look like a serious beast.

The small, far set eyes made him look intelligent and they're slightly more horizontal than slanted close set eyes as seen on the red fox. And their ears tend to be slightly curled inwards like devil horns. I think I have a good base structure for the fox now. So I'm going to explore that more and see what i come up with. And then base that design onto his human counterpart.

The grayscale one looks too much like a lion which I don't like... I think it's highly exaggerated the bonniness of the face set against that fur.

    Project : Kitsune 3

The two foxes above this one looked more dejected and a bit jaded. I want this fox to be old, but stern looking. I was looking at Tibetan clothing and found some cool headgear that the men wear and shawls so I decided that his design should reflect his possible human counterpart.

I like the direction this is taking so I'll be pushing this design further. Anyone have any critiques to provide? I personally think that his nose looks a bit too collie-ish. Other than that, I think he represents a Tibetan fox quite well considering.
