pestibug - much cooler without the eyes
Highland3r - nice idea on the gel slime bit!
Harmageddon - cool angle, could use some desaturation at the top
    snippet
    artiphats - i really like no 2
scorge - thanx mate! and really nice color work. the designs are otherworldly, i dig all three, especially the one on the left.
Rob Powell - dude, your new thumbs are killer, i like No 3, the refs really paid off.
sevira - the design is looking sick!
blazinwolf - nice amterial render, reminds me of the alien from cameron's the abyss
ColdDegree - i think no 1? but would be cool if you could develop a few more
artiphats - i dig the colors mate, how are you going to scale references?
ryansumo -flower headed fish no 4
    mat0fr
Ricardo Robles - love the translucent look, i have a submarine in mine too!
Sunseaker - whoa, thats freaky man
RyNSWORLD - freaky man, but i think an eyeball would pop in that depth
lkjhgfdsa - nice one, thanx for the wips too
Shadowind - very nice material on the skin
klungsaman - the new piece fits the theme better but it feels slightly small, like a mollusk
jinjorz - no 1! i like the "grin" it has on its face.

thanx for all the votes guys, i counted them as well as responses from my friends on facebook, and the tally was for No 3.

i felt that design was too busy, so i flattened it out and was inspired by horse shoe crabs.

    forgot my rationale,

i'm calling it a Deep Sea Diamond back, the extreme pressure of the trench compresses the carapace and turns it reflective crystals.

jaroldsng: thnx dude, yours is turning out awesome btw

jinjorz: welcome to COW, some neat thumbnails, i like 1 the best

lkjhgfdsa: looking promising, try to do something about the squid in the background, so it doesn't take the focus away from your creature so much

artiphats: the larger fins look a lot better, like they can actually help the creature's movement

well I'm at a bit of a predicament. should I have the dots on it's body bioluminescent or not?
also I seem to be making some good progress, pretty soon I'll start working on the colour a bit more and maybe push the values a bit more, because it's still pretty dark. still debating whether or not to put a sub in there to give it scale and a reasonable lightsource, I'm not really all that good at drawing machinery and vehicles but we'll see...

Alright, things are taking shape. Deceided to try another tail, for now just outline sketch on that part. Added debris, at such depth I assume loads of stuff is floating around (besides, its what my fish feeds on anyway.)

    *drumrolllllllll*

Why I always post so late at night? Tomorrow I shall write comments!

I much prefer the sketched tail, just my 2 cents.

    Wow! Great work from everyone...
    Just to mention a few...

jinjorz I think either number 2 or a mix of 1 and 3 would look nice.

jaroldsng Looking good man, I like the lighting you've done on it, and especially the luminescent stripes. The design is looking cool, but it's hard to make out because it's so dark, but I guess that's the problem with designing a creature deep underwater...

Rob Powell Keep the dots! Definitely makes it look better and stood out from the rest of the designs. There's the problem that you can't make out your creature too well because it's so dark, and I know it can't really be helped because it's meant to be deep underwater and dark, but I think you should make your creature a bit clearer. Like you said, I think you should work on the values and forms a bit because it's looking a bit flat, and I'm not too convinced with it's shape... If that makes sense.

pestibug I think you've got the light source a bit messed up in your current image, like there's a lot more light on the top of the creature and on the inside of one of it's fins, where there's no obvious light source affecting it.

RyNSWOrLD Nice drawing, but I personally don't see this as a deep sea creature. Maybe you could clarify how it survives enormous amounts of water pressure?

kayness Looking good so far! I've got naught to add >__>

    I can't sleep...so I stayed up to finish this

My creature is nothing too flashy or grandiose. It is relatively flat and streamlined in shape, 4 eyes for seeing in the low visibility, 2 glowy attennae thing to attract prey, and the four feeling things at the bottom, just because

p.s. oops, sorry I just realized that I didn't make the size scale of the creature apparent

pps. when i have time i'll critique the other entries...i think there are so many excellent ones in this round

pestibug very nice rendering of the forms :]

    RyNSWOrLD interesting concept

kayness good detail on the eyes and mouth but work on the outer fins more

anyways i wokred on mine more im probably gonna change its side fins

colddegree - thanks so much but i don't know if i should do anything more on this, since I realized that my creature probably won't qualify because it doesn't look anything like it's average-shark-sized or larger D: (I missed the brief)

Hey guys, ive been a lurker here for a while, was semi-active a while ago and want to get back into CA.
Jumping right into it, my idea was a sort of jellyfish like creature, with fluorescent growths to lure in prey. Its only a WIP but comments & critique are much appreciated!

    @jarold
    fukken sweet creature
love how you managed to make it look really massive
(kinda jealous because my creature is just too small to use a submarine in the composition, all the mechanical studies from last month for nothing ;_

    @blazin
    still loving it
you really got a hand for that translucent look

    @sealegs
yay, another one with a chitinous concept
    excited to see it finished

first cow Im really participating in and I already love it

    Reply (and post time) !

Jaroldsng: What a massive beast! Really digging the 'shield'. (and your sub is bigger than mine! boooo )

Rob Powell: Leave the dots. It adds so much more to the creature.

Kayness: I like how frantic your creature looks. I can see it charging full speed at its prey from the murky depths. Perhaps have a whale skeleton stuck between its teeth? Should show its ENEORMOUS.

Taiski: yeah the lightsource is all over the place. its so hard since well, there'd be no actual lightsource (except from the little submarine) but somehow I still have to show what's going on! it is.... a challenge. But maybe you like what I did now. Added lights and darkened the hell out of everything.

ColdDegree: Thank you. Hope my latest experiment didn't ruin them Also I like yer fish! Very cool deisgn, I like how its almost a mix bewteen a fish and salamander. I can see if useing those fins to crawl along the bottom and pushing itself into narrow spaces as it scours for food.

Blazinwolf: Beautiful rendering, the transclusency is spot on. The only thing is, I don't know if it looks 'big'. Right now it looks shrimp size?

Alright, soooo decided to try something else, and just crush this whole image. deepsea is dark, murky. Let me know is this is better or not.

Hey everyone, im really excited for this.

I did alot of research last night on all this, and im trying to focus on realistically how a creature of this size would actually be able to function at these depths.

I watched these videos for some help, you might like em as well.

    jaroldsng-very pretty.

    Rob Powell's-looks deadly.

pestibug-I like where you have taken it but the lighting does not make that much sense. There should be some reflected light on the bottom of the fin above where the scuba machine is.

RyNSWOrLD- I kind of wish I could see it in it's environment.

    kayness- Nice work!

ColdDegree- I like where this is going.

    mugen1- Great start!

Sealegs- I can't wait to see what you do with your ideas.

blazinwolf- Very cool! As far as critiquing I would just say maybe to make the background dude a little bit dimmer. I feel that it competes for attention with the main creature just a little bit. But that is just my own opinion, you seem to know what you are doing.

mat0fr- You have the tongue of your creature glowing but yet there is no reflected light in the mouth or teeth.

    Lege1- Looks good so far.

Wellll I decided to start over because I wasn't digging the design, and it was definitely akward.
So I am going with a squid. I also plan to add more luminescence along its tentecles and side fins. Though I'm gonna call it done for the day and start again tomorrow I think.

New WIP, didn't like my old designs. Also have a funny little idea here, wherein the creature's bowels transform it's food into flourescent poop, which is contained in a receptacle that it dangles in front of prospective prey. New food, meet old food. crits welcome!

Slowly pushing this towards completion, really wanted to finish it today, but alas; life, work, chores, some of many obstacles we have to overcome nowadays. Man I need some sleep, lol.

    Rob Powell Looking good!

acb not bad for someone who hasn't participated in a while!

Here's my update. Looking at the finish line as well for this one, will work on a background and tighten up details tomorrow. BTW is the deadline August 3 or 6? Just wondering if I should be panicking already!

    acb its a seahorse!
Rob Powell i love the lil tiny eyes and the swirling fish, those two elements are a big and efficient scale booster compared to my boring sub!
Scorge nice lighting on your demon fish!
Liffey subtle and effective lighting mate
    Snippet thanx!
Lege1 cool composition, could use some more depth in the lower trench area
mat0fr better lighting now, but the light edges on the rock on the right could use some refining
Pestibug thanx mate!, i like the new lights on the third fin, but maybe your sub could illuminate him more? the murky looks vicious, maybe you could give it a hot spot
sevira thank you! not much mechanical on my sub, its just a pill shape
blazinwolf mannn i just love love it! i wish the creature could feel bigger, but the translucent jelly fish/ prawn like surface is making me so jealous!
    Sealegs cool sketches mate
    ColdDegree thanx!

    ----------

im calling it done for mine, theres so much more to improve, but i feel the more i work on it the uglier it gets. great stuff everyone!
