I feel so obsessed with cityscapes, I feel like I can't do anything else until I figure these out... X_X

Tried peoples advice with going back to perspective and no opacity brush, and also redlining photos and other people's enviros. At least I'm not totally lost and confused anymore, though there's still this huge gap I'm feeling in going from perspectived boxes to actual city paintings. (Someone suggested playing with boxes to me for lighting so that should help some)

Any tips or further suggestions on other exercises I could do to learn to do city-enviros would be very welcome.

Meanwhile I'm going to play with perspective a bit more (these weren't 100% accurate) and study how it manifests in rl and photos...

if you've got problems with rendering details the best option is:

photo studies don't care about building image from sketch, perspective and so on

build your library of details by studying them

    http://www.pbase.com/galleries?view=popular
http://www.atyrianodyssey.com/index_...ineng-city.php screens from GW (but fantasy cities are also useful)
    http://www.opacity.us/locations/
    http://www.flickr.com/photos/sparth
    http://www.lostamerica.com/index.html
    http://www.modern-ruins.com/

    the most important issue is
not sampling colors from original photos

and the best option is to use separate screens for photo and PS

    cheers

Woah, these couple last updates are really great, you are improving mega fast
The portraits are my favorite, I would like to draw like that!
About the last robo chick - anatomy looks great [legs especially], but something bothers me around the boobs. If you meant them to be like metallic round robo boobs, then it's ok, but if they are more real flesh boobs, then you must consider the weight of them and the nipples must be showing a bit in each direction [not stright].

@vanaga why thank you, it's motivating to hear that
About robochick, yes her boobs were supposed to be metal - everything was supposed to be metal except the 'hair' part (inspired by a weird song title 'the robot with human hair') I probably didn't render it well/far enough for that to be recognizable haha. Good tip about the boobs though, my boobs always look pretty plasticky. >_>

Meanwhile, taking a break, from composition exercise. I just noticed the legs are pretty fucked up

Hey thanks for the comment in my sb Your stuff is beautiful! I love your digital painting style, particularly on the first painting and the one with the girl and mecha, it's wonderful and expressive. Your studies of environments are really interesting and inspiring as well! Keep at it, you're fantastic

@A-May Thank you very much! Yeah those two pieces show what kind of stuff I like to do xD Prob won't be seeing too many of those because I'm trying to step out of my comfort zone to work on weaknesses, haha.

@Ceteri Of course, basics are always good! Great head studies, keep it up! ^_^

Tiny thing I did today: Photostudy, Time: just about an hour. I had fun drawing the wrinkles but made him look so old. meh

    @zac thanks man!

Any tips on architecture, detailing, environments in general and suggestions for some exercises I could do, would be much appreciated.

Tiny update of the day, 1h11m (Im so slow lol, I just been doing a lot of 'abstract flat composition' practice.. those are in To The Top Study group because I dislike double posting )

hey cloudcan, I dunno if you were going for extreme accuracy, but I noticed some proportion issues in your painting, so here we go:

In the painting below, you can see that the middle object between the two poles is quite high: but not only that, most of the objects in the middle tend to also seem a bit too large. Take for instance your railings(shown by the yellow line) not only is the angle slightly off, but there seems to be a bit of a proportion problem between going on at the bottom right of the painting, as indicated but the yellow lines.

In the picture, based on what little I know about composition, the two towers seem to be the most dominant parts of the structure in the photo, hence this is why they're the highest and have a stark contrast with the sky.

But, if you don't really care about accuracy of the angles and the negative space in the painting right now, the most apparent flaw is that everything between the two towers appear disproportionately larger (when compared to the actual photo).

    @towy Thank you ^_^

@Kharnaghe Yep, the study's main purpose was to learn different types of details that are present in a factory-type building, so I didn't concentrate much on anything else as you could tell. Thanks for the comment, I agree that it's important to not forget about other aspects of painting and I'll definitely take better accuracy into mind for other photo studies

App one hour zombie I did while relaxing to music was fun~ maybe I render this out later

Wrinkles can be some of the most fun thing to draw! And those wrinkles turned out very well Haha, I first read that last sketch "apple zombie". He is kind of shaped like one, isn't he?

I'm loving the zombie. It would be interesting to see how far you take it.

As for your new architectural post, I think it looks marvelous, although I'm curious as to whether you were going to do anything with the grass.

just sayin thanks for posting in my sb. as for critiques, looking at your cityscapes, if your version of ps has vanishing point (a filter), definitely use it, it sets up perfect perspective grids. and as that last figure of yours, i think the main problem is that the body language doesn't make any sense, her stance seems to relaxed for her to be shooting at you.

@takashmen Thanks! I'll think about where further to go with this.
@GoGoJojo LOL that is one apple I would not eat. Thanks though, you gave me major lols
@zac No, I left it out as the thing was a quickie for factory details (so factory detail is the only thing I worked on xD) Thanks for the zomb comment as well, I'm not sure where to go with it though xD letting it sit for now.
@Partisan Thank you for dropping by!! Your sb was truly jelly-worth xD Thank you for the much-needed encouragement!
Edit: @stabby2486 I'll definitely look for the vanishing point thing in PS, thanks for the tip And you are right about the girl I didn't quite plan it ahead as I should have xD I have this annoying 'just add a shooting gun somewhere for teh lols' mentality, quite unhealthy.
Today's measly update, just a few practices with perspective. (Sorry for big image)

@m0uS3r Thanks, I would too but right now I'm concentrating more on studies so that projects and prsonal illustrations will come out the way I want to xD I'm still doing them as warmups and doodlees though, maybe I'll post a few of those

Just a few more quick thumbs - trying to play with perspective a little and get used to actually *using* it:

@vanaga Thanks!! ^_^ We'll see about the doodles ..haha

    Some more composition/perspective:

Portrait photo study, I seem to have a major problem with portraits, it looks like a person but a different person from the actual person >:C Hopefully more photo studies will improve this proportion problem..?

And an enviro I tried out (took a doodle I had given up on a while ago and applied what I learned this week) Not even close to perfect but I think I've improved a lot

And attached are my alchemy results from last evening.. sooo fun C:

Lovely work! I'm seeing improvement in your landscape/cityscape pieces, good work so far. Not sure why you think you have a "major" problem with portraits, your early August works look great. If it's of any help... from what I picked up, problems in portraiture come either from a lack of understanding of the head/face structure, or from a lack of understanding of values/light/color. See if you have more problems with either of these, and it should help you figure out what more specific exercices you could do. Maybe a live model would help?

You've got solid work and you're improving at a good pace. Good stuff, it makes me want to come back and check this SB all the time. More!!

@Robodrey Portraiture problem because it doesn't look like the individual person But yes, I'll be trying live models soon Thank you so much for your kind words!

Some more stuff... basic value/lighting study with faces. First is photoreffed, on average 7min ea, and second is from life and TV (TV ones are hard because you have to do in like 3 seconds >_< ) As you can see, some are better than others.. >_<
