    Alexander Brandt's sketchbook

I'm 21, i've been drawing seriously for around a year. Now I think it's time for me to take it to the next level! I just bought a wacom tablet & painter 11. This is my first digital painting. It's my first painting of any kind actually.
I'm not sensitive... please feel free to rip me apart with useful criticism.

I'm feeling pretty good about the wacom tablet now. Mostly i've been doing quick sketches, and experimenting with the tools in painter 11.
I've decided not to post my anatomy studies, because they're really more about the information than the rendering at this point. In depth osteology(bones) mostly.
I've also been reading 'the dimensions of color' by David Briggs, it's excellent.

I don't really understand the difference between transparency and opacity, if anyone would care to enlighten me?

Anyway, today I was experimenting with burn and dodge, as well as magic wand.

I suppose I should mention that I'm drawing these using my webcam as a mirror.

Now I'm going to start working towards achieving lifelike color.
At least... that was the idea anyway. It all went horribly awry, for many reasons I'm sure, but the one I've focused on is value.
I started by taking this photo.

I was having difficulty seeing values in color, as you can see in these hilarious results... in my second attempt I tried to do the same thing in black and white.
This was also a dismal failure, and I'm not sure why I couldn't do it.

I went ahead and did the value study anyway, in pencil. I found it surprisingly difficult. I'll have to start doing these regularly.

Still working on values, but i've gone back to using a mirror or webcam.
I've also taken to doing my anatomy studies in pen, running lines over the form.

    Here's my latest masterpiece...
